amyrillis and easter lily

I have two sad looking plants in my window. Is it too soon to plant them outside and do I cut them down beforehand?

Easter lilly can be planted out now, take into account that it has allready bloomed and will die back. Make sure you let it die back on its own as the greenery will feed the bulb. The amerillis I have not ever had luck putting it out so I could not tell you, allthough if you plan on bringing it back in I would plant the whole pot in the ground so it will be easier to bring back in.

Amaryllis will bloom and then for a fair length of time will be a foliage plant. During this period you hope to have it in good sunny location where it will store the energy needed to bloom again. If your plant is in this stage, putting it outside after danger of frost makes sense, but then it must come in before fall frost. If it is already beginning to die back, keep it in a sunny window and let it die back. After die back, store in a cool dark place and wait for the next cycle.

Do not cut back the easter lily. It needs to store energy.

Years ago my mother got an Easter Lily. I found somewhere that said the white blossom is not its natural color, but man forced to grow that way. I am assuming that is true, because I planted it in the garden when the blooms were done. I just took it out of the pot and put it straight into the ground without none of this fancy extra things I have seen mentioned here or elsewhere. It was fine all year. I never did anything special for the winter either, like I have seen suggested. But the following spring when it came up, there were no white blossoms at all. No I had no other lilies ever planted in the garden. The only one ever planted was the Easter Lily. The blooms were smaller than they were the previous year and they were orange with brown spots, very much like a tiger lily. It can only be what I heard that by planting the Easter lily it reverted back to it's natural state. The was no other lily and so my only lily had to be the Easter Lilly from the previous year. It was growing in the exact spot that the former one was planted.

Thank you for looking up Kamloops! Though we are very far north, we are in an extremely arid region, with ancient, treeless mountains covered in sagebrush. The mountain ridge we live against even has its own native cactus, which bloomed this year for the first time in a decade. We have many coyotes, magpies, partridges, and owls. Kamloops is the 'sunshine capitol' of Canada, with 100+F days in the summer, and very cold, snowy days in the winter. So you may wish you didn't have that clay soil (which, BTW, roses absolutely adore!), but you surely wouldn't want to trade in for our stony, stony, stony non-soil. Even when I try to plant a small perennial I bought, it takes me a good fifteen minutes to dig out all the large rocks, and then the little stones. Easter lilies are forced into bloom at this time of year. If blooming now, it will NOT rebloom again this year so there is no reason why you cannot keep in its current container, take it with you when you move and replant later this season or early fall. You are far less likely to damage the bulb by just holding in its pot than by planting and lifting later. I am not all that familiar with the climate of Alberta but I'd suspect that it might be a bit too severe for Easter lilies to flourish in the ground. Lilium longiflorum is not the hardiest of bulbs and is generally recommended for zone 6 or 7 and above.

I gave one of the two lilies that I bought to my mother. She wanted to give one to her pastor for the church she attends. He asked her where she found one at, because they couldn't find any for sale anywhere. Our weather has been fairly typical for this time of year. Nothing out of the ordinary. I've asked the people at the Wal-Mart garden center, but couldn't get any definitive answers. I went to Home Depot a few times within the past couple of weeks and didn't see any there either. I'm not sure why, but my local area didn't receive anywhere near the usual amount of Easter lilies this season. I already have plenty from previous years. I don't plant them in the ground, but I do pot them up and grow them like that. That way, I can move them around and bring them in to enjoy their blooms. I was just wondering if any other areas didn't receive their usual supply either. I don't think that it had anything to do with the weather (at least not locally). I know Easter has been early this year. That has never really affected the plant supply in the past. The greenhouses always plan for this in advance. I do have cats, though they never bother any of my lilies and couldn't care any less about them.

I put my Amaryllis out in June, in their pots to enjoy the summer. They like warm temperatures and it is much too cold at night (and during days even) for it to be outside now. Keep it inside near a sunny window if possible. Water it regularly. Don't cut the foliage (except the spent flower stalk). If you cut the leaves off it is sure to not bloom next year. Then when it is outside for the summer, give it liquid fertilizer. I keep it in the pots - I did an experiment one year planting directly in the ground but found it easier and better result to keep in pots. It can take a fair amount of drying out when outside (so you need not water it as much as other container plants). If the amaryllis bulbs were from discount places my experience they don't rebloom as reliably. Then in fall in late Sept I take the pots in the garage and hold back watering. Eventually the leaves die. They are now dormant. Then I move them to my basement until Jan-March time frame, not watering at all. I then bring them upstairs and water again. They will start to grow and rebloom at this time. Then repeat the cycle. My rule if a bulb doesn't bloom one year I don't waste time with it and just compost it.
