Easter Lily... Shortage?

I would post this in the Lily forum, but I thought I'd post it here instead...

Usually, I see Easter lilies everywhere at all of the usual stores. There are so many that many are left over after the holiday is over. (Which is usually when I love buying them up, as they're marked down for clearance.) But this year, I've only seen barely a handful of them, no matter where I went shopping. My local Wal-Mart only had three, maybe four. When I went to Kroger, there was only one, and it looked really puny and weak. The local grocery store just across the highway from my neighborhood had three. Two of which I bought. That pretty much sums up every Easter lily that I've seen anywhere this year. Which I found to be quite odd and unusual. That's why, when I first spotted the handful of lilies at Wal-Mart, my thought was, "Oh, they'll be getting more in later..." But they never did. That's why I decided to post on here, seeing if this has occurred elsewhere. I've been keeping my eye out for them for quite a while now and haven't seen anywhere near what would typically be sold for this time of year.

I already own several from previous years, but they've only just begun poking their heads up from their pots, and aren't anywhere near close to blooming just yet. But it's been kind of somewhat of a little tradition of mine; to buy up many of the marked down, clearance Easter lilies. And this year, I won't be getting to do that. Though, I did buy two of them at regular price. And they weren't properly forced at the right time. All of their buds are still closed and not even close to opening up just yet. They're close, but they won't be opening up until a couple of days after the holiday weekend is over with.

Really? I saw lots of Easter Lilies yesterday, but I shop at smaller chains, not the large companies (who are trying not to promote holidays). That is why I shop at the places I do now. :)

Home Depot here had about 20 on clearance for $1 each yesterday.

Years ago my mother got an Easter Lily. I found somewhere that said the white blossom is not its natural color, but man forced to grow that way. I am assuming that is true, because I planted it in the garden when the blooms were done. I just took it out of the pot and put it straight into the ground without none of this fancy extra things I have seen mentioned here or elsewhere. It was fine all year. I never did anything special for the winter either, like I have seen suggested. But the following spring when it came up, there were no white blossoms at all. No I had no other lilies ever planted in the garden. The only one ever planted was the Easter Lily. The blooms were smaller than they were the previous year and they were orange with brown spots, very much like a tiger lily. It can only be what I heard that by planting the Easter lily it reverted back to it's natural state. The was no other lily and so my only lily had to be the Easter Lilly from the previous year. It was growing in the exact spot that the former one was planted.

Thanks for the info... I was concerned because the Easter Lily looked so terrible. I guess it's just going into its dormant stage earlier this summer than our other lily, because it was forced into bloom in time for Easter. We'll plant it outside soon and keep our fingers crossed. The lower leaves on our Fire lily are looking a little better this week, so maybe it just needed some normal summer weather after all that rain we had in June. Thanks again, -topie

Unfortunately, you can't grow an Easter lily as a a houseplant successfully. Plants that normally grow outdoors in temperate climates - like the vast majority of lilies - do not make good houseplants, as indoor growing conditions fail to provide sufficient light, humidity and most importantly, the low temperatures necessary to accommodate a chill period or natural dormancy. You could possibly allow the bulb to go dormant (all the foliage dying back) then chill for the appropriate amount of time in the refrigerator, but you need to avoid fruits and some veggies stored in the same frig as they give off a gas that will impair blooming. And with no guarantee that the lily experienced adequate photosynthesis to generate enough energy to rebloom. The insects in the soil are most likely fungus gnats or their larvae, a common pest of indoor plants due to excessive watering and a poor quality potting soil. They feed on plant roots and decomposing organic matter in the potting soil. If I were you, I'd give the lily to someone who had a space to plant it outdoors. And treat yourself to fresh, healthy and budded Easter lily when they are marketed in the spring to enjoy while in bloom and then discard.

I picked up l8 pots from church. All of those pots are regrowing new lilly plants, and there are multiple plants in each pot, which means multiple stems of the flowers. I am so excited. I feel like I've done a good deed by saving them from the garbage pile. What a waste that would have been.

Keep in mind that Easter is really EARLY this year. Maybe that's why you are seeing fewer..., especially if your zone is still cold. I did see a lot of them in local stores though today. Funny, I was never really into them. You can plant them into the yard after the bloom is enjoyed for this season. They are hardy into at least Zone 7.

P.S., I just did a little research, if you have cats, beware. Easter Lily seems to be very toxic to felines. From what I read, even brushing against the pollen can cause harm.

I gave one of the two lilies that I bought to my mother. She wanted to give one to her pastor for the church she attends. He asked her where she found one at, because they couldn't find any for sale anywhere. Our weather has been fairly typical for this time of year. Nothing out of the ordinary. I've asked the people at the Wal-Mart garden center, but couldn't get any definitive answers. I went to Home Depot a few times within the past couple of weeks and didn't see any there either. I'm not sure why, but my local area didn't receive anywhere near the usual amount of Easter lilies this season.

I already have plenty from previous years. I don't plant them in the ground, but I do pot them up and grow them like that. That way, I can move them around and bring them in to enjoy their blooms.

I was just wondering if any other areas didn't receive their usual supply either. I don't think that it had anything to do with the weather (at least not locally). I know Easter has been early this year. That has never really affected the plant supply in the past. The greenhouses always plan for this in advance.

I do have cats, though they never bother any of my lilies and couldn't care any less about them.

Stores seem to be over stocked with them up here. On Saturday most shelves were completely full and even cashiers had them on their counters. Both at Walmart and Home depot and Reno depot.

Might get some to plant at my Cabin if they go on clearance.
