79 year old gardener injured chopping down a tree.

I saw this on the news this morning. I'm a lot younger than she is and I wouldn't think of even picking up an axe that size, let alone try cutting down a tree all by myself. But I have to give her credit, pretty fiesty and independent. Her neighbors explain that she is gardening all the time.

I linked to the article below, but on WBZ news this morning it showed a photo of the woman. She looked to be in amazing shape and not 79 years old at all. Thought it might be of interest...

Let her be our role model for ageing and gardening! Personally, at age 74, I'd have gone at that tree with a small chain saw or if that's not available, my Sawzall. Dull axes are hard on one's arthritic wrists and shoulders. At any age. And hadn't she learned how to fell a tree in a preferred direction? Two cuts, opposite sides -- you see it all the time on TV.

She was pulling on the tree with a rope, but it didn't work as she expected.

ROTFLMBO .... engineers.. are so ... so ... conceptual ... ask them to explain anything.. and odds are.. they can ... though most of it will be un-understandable to most of us ... but OMG ... most of them need to be kept away from tools ... i had one engineer buddy.. who could do NOTHING ... without making himself bleed ... it was a running joke between the rest of us.. taking odds when it would happen in any given project ...... my wife to be and the gang went up north for a long weekend.. and we were chopping wood or whatever.. for the cottage owner.. and dave starts bleeding.. and the rest of us ignore him.. and go have another beer ... and wifey is having a stroke because he cut himself .. and our reaction was.. oh.. thats just daves way ... lol ... that was near 15 years ago.. and she was just telling the story .. again .... last week ... lol listen closely ... on trees ... the biggest mistake i made for decades.. was thinking the branch had to be taken down intact ... say a 15 footer ... then one day.. i had a 'duh' moment ... and started cutting off 5 foot sections ... basically what i could hold in my hand after severing ... without falling off the ladder ... all the brush is going to have to be sectioned out for disposal.. so why not do it while it is hanging in the tree ... as i said.. DUH!!!! good luck ken

Hey there Mango mango, I was actually just responding to your question above since I haven't been on this thread for a couple weeks. To answer your question, pruning should be done after harvest of the fruit. I see it all the time- mango trees are as big as dinosaurs here and many people prune vigorously after the summer is over and after harvest. Here's a link which discusses pruning and answers the question: http://lee.ifas.ufl.edu/AgNatRes/Pubs/Pruning_Mango_Trees.pdf Also, I'm far from being an expert on soils- or any other gardening topic for the matter- but I took the advice of a neighbor and used a combination more or less of this mix: 40% natural soil from my backyard, 40% specialized Hawaii potting soil, and about 10% gravel and perlite. I know it seems weird to use bagged potting soil instead of bagged garden soil, but my neighbor said that this mix would be beneficial for its added nutrients. I topped it off with some mulch, but the area needs work because so much grass is growing in the area.

"What have we gotten ourselves into?" Home ownership. I really think you should relax and enjoy your new home. None of the issues you are currently concerned about is a serious issue. I understand that everything is not exactly how you wanted it to be, but... It does sound like you should have spent a bit more time checking things out. Wood look tile really doesn't look (or sound) like hardwood, so, I don't think it's a case of them trying to fool potential buyers or anything and travertine really doesn't look like marble. I'm sure your home is beautiful, though. There's nothing wrong with wood look tile or travertine and these materials can cost quite a bit, so I wouldn't categorize them as inherently cheap or somehow lacking. They can be lower maintenance than marble or hardwood and can actually be better choices in many situations. Be really glad you aren't finding out that there's something like an electrical or plumbing problem that was not apparent in your inspections, or something else that would be really expensive. It could be a lot worse. It really could. I think you should enjoy your new home. If there are things you don't like about how it is now, just change them over time. Stuff like that is just part of owning a home, imo. Fwiw, I've never bought a house and planned to keep the flooring or the landscaping.

Hi NHBabs! It's nice to hear from a fellow Granite-stater. It's hard to believe after yesterdays frigid temps (Brrrrr) and all this SNOW that one day we can even dare to dream about visiting gardens....it seems like a faraway dream. I hope I will be able to keep up with my gardens next year. I got zero fall cleanup done and now spring will be a daunting task. IF I can get my garden to be presentable I will contact you. I would love a garden friend. Thanks for your kind invitation. As for daylily sources, my favorite one is Harmon Hill Farm in Hudson. Maybe you have heard of them? Carl and Marlene Harmon are wonderful friends and sell thousands of varieties directly from their field (which is a lovely way to spend a day). I have bought many of mine from them and because they are grown right here in NH you know they will be hardy. As for other sources, I have done mail-order from many different vendors and even off the Lily Auction. What I like about going to the Harmons is that you get to see the daylily personally. You can judge for yourself if it is what you want in your garden and how well it grows. Many times I ordered something online and realized it doesn't grow well here or that the photos of it made it look better than it really was. They do have a website so you can get your wish list made over the long winter. Take care and stay warm!

Wow that lady is VERY lucky that 1) the tree didn't kill her, and 2) that the teenager heard her cries only a few minutes after the accident! 10 inch diameter is not a small tree.

I hope I'm still gardening at 79, but do not wish to have another tree mishap at any age...

I once heard from a friend about how his father was killed when a tree he was cutting down fell right on top of him! Awful! His wife found himÃ¢ÂÂ¦.terrible shock. This man had been felling trees on his large lot for many years but didn't realize that the one he was cutting was diseased inside.

Years ago we had a diseased tree come down before we expected it. The borrowed saw was still in the tree and it was hung up in another tree.It looked healthy but was soft inside. PLEASE do not think pulling on a rope is going to help. It didn't work for our neighbors but fortunately, there wasn't any serious damage.

I'm glad this woman is ok. My FIL used to cut cordwood to supplement his social security but he cut trees his whole life. He gave it up when he was about 83.
