Where to go: gardener vacationing in Boston?

I'll be in Boston this summer on vacation and would like see take some trips in the area to see gardens/botanic gardens/arboretums, maybe get some hiking in at the same time. When I was in NY, for instance, it was great to get to Wave Hill and the NY Botanic Garden. What does the Boston area have to offer?

Absolutely go to the Isabelle Stewart Gardner Museuem.... there's no clue on the outside as to what it's like inside. The museum has a fascinating history. It was her (Isabelle's) home. Built around an interior garden, each floor has balconies that look down into all the lush greenery. It's like an oasis in the busy city.

Many years ago the museum was kept as if it were still her home with holes in the floors where tables or chairs should sit and her "stuff"/paintings, etc. everywhere. Sadly, though, theft has caused the museum to be cleaned out and now it's like any other. But if you're lucky to get there during a concert (held in her own chapel), you can get a sense of what it was like to have lived in such a magnificent house.

As stated by the "Emerald Necklace Conservancy" Boston has been recognized as the 3rd greenest city in the nation so rest assured there are many gems (arboretum, parks, gardens) within the city and accessible by public transportation -"MBTA". Will you be spending any time out side of the city? If so let us know as there are many more wonderful places for you to explore. kt

Ask your sister and BIL what kind of shade they get on the east side of the house (other than the house itself). Sometimes houses are so close together that east facings barely get morning sun. We have loropetalum on the east side and it's easy to maintain to the height desired and it's evergreen. Grows well here and there are several varieties with either green or maroon leaves. East facing foundations, so long as they have real pitch for drainage, would hold dwarf burford holly , weeping yaupon holly (tall), osmanthus(tea olive,fragrant flowers), pittosporum (solid green or variegated), various viburnums (flower and berries). A protected spot with excellent drainage would be nice for a winter daphne although you have to plant them very high in the soil. East might be a decent location for some gardenia shrubs too. She can tuck in shade loving annuals that tolerate the morning sun. You'll know more once you get here as to drainage, sunpath,prevailing wind direction and general air circulation. What part of Charlotte will you be visiting? There are many garden centers but there are one or two 'best' in each direction. Endless Summer hydrangeas have had mixed reviews this year. She might try potting one up and placing it where she wants it (or where it wants to be). If she's dealing with new construction landscaping, know that most of what they claim as topsoil in beds and borders is simply construction subsoil. Nearly devoid of nutrients. First order of business is to have the soils tested and then amend them as required. She can have that done in advance of your arrival. Before she invests in a japanese maple know that its siting is critical for its survival. Many of the varieties just won't take if exposed to our hot afternoon sun and heat reflected off the house. The red broadleafs are more tolerant, the laceleafs the least tolerant.(in my experience) As for landscape architects..the ones I've dealt with fail to take into account sunpath, existing drainage, nearby houses, nearby trees etc. etc. They know their plants latin names and what seems to thrive in Charlotte but fail to remember that they won't be doing the installation. Uneducated and uncaring crews can doom the best planned landscape materials.

i am familiar with all the gardens recommended by other posters but i assure you that you will not find any more beautiful gardens than those at Tranquil Lake Nursery in Rehoboth Ma. It's only 30 min from new bedford. very large property; the nursery specializes in daylilies and iris, but the extensive display gardens are filled with thousands of unusual perennials and shrubs, vines and trees. the co-owner is a well respected garden designer. they are very relaxed and friendly there. you could bring a picnic lunch and eat under the trees and/or down by the pond. After Tr.Lake, and close to you , I would also second the rec. for Blithewold gardens, not far from you, in Bristol R.I. Lovely views out to the water as well. Next to Blithewold is Green Animals, a very interesting/unique display of topiary. I would not send you to Garden in the Woods this time of year. It is really best in the spring, when there are lots of their woodland things blooming. Summer can be a very dull time there plant wise. Tower Hill is a very extensive botanical garden that is filled with display gardens of many many types, and a fascinating conservatory. It is definitely worth the trip, but it would take you about 1 1/2 hrs.to get there from NB. Once there, you would want to allow yourselves at least 3 hours to see it all. they have a cafe on site. The nothern Ca coast is perfect for a road trip, with many sights along the way. To make it easy on yourself, fly into the small Santa Barbara airport(if possible), and rent a car from there. Santa Barbara itself is a lovely, wonderful, bustling little village with plenty of shops, great food, the pier, and of course the magnificent beach! Oh, and USB is right on the ocean. You'll only be about an hour(a gorgeoous drive!)from San Simeon where Hearst Castle is located, but you would need to book your tours online beforehand~we dId two, one after the other, but don't recall which. I swear the views from the estate are a look into heaven! You will also be close to San Luis Obispo, a great little village with a ban of fast food chains. There's a tree~lined street you can't miss, which is reminiscent of a scene out of Gone With the Wind with the mighty Oaks and also the college with it's gorgeous grounds. I can't remember how far you will be from Solvang, but it's a short drive and well worth seeing this bit of Sweden-in-America! Monticeido and Summerland, are other small villages worthy of a bit of time, and close to each other. As an aside, i'm also somewhat of a 'food snob' and was happy to learn the majority of the small restaurants along the way have their own organic gardens and if not, the produce is bought locally from organic farmers/farmers markets. It's definitely a trip i'm planning to do again, and will take in Monterey and Carmel, possibly as far as San Fran/Sausilito. As for San Diego, I lived there for 27 years before moving to Austin, and it can get crazy on the freeways. Parking places at the beach are rare, restaurants can be a 2 hour wait, and if there's a baseball game, traffic can be at a standstill in every direction. The Del Mar Fair is in late June ending on July 4th, but two weeks later horse racing season starts~all this creates more traffic, etc in SD. Just a heads up, as it can become frustrating(and overwhelming!)and may be more than you bargained for. Just something to keep in mind if you plan a visit. Looking forward to your decision. We spent a week in Costa Rica some years back, at a nice place near Jaco. We though it was okay, not more. The locals were very nice, food at the resort and in town wasn't more than so-so. We had a rental car and drove up and down the coast to a few National parks and other attractions. The jungle setting made it a bit too creature-infested for our taste, we encountered snakes and a scorpion in and near our room that we could have done without. Monkeys too, they were fun and benign. We decided that the added hassle factor to get there (two flights and a wait in between made for a long trip in both directions) wasn't worth it. We like Hawaii a lot, it's an easier and shorter trip and what's available when we get there, we like better.

If you get a chance, my favorite place about an hour from Boston is the Tower Hill Botanical Garden. Their web site is: www.towerhillbg.org. If you click on the web site, it will show you pictures of the gorgeous views of the surroundings and vistas. The drive there is also beautiful. Try to get a gps to help you find it in your rental car. They have an organgerie, an Italianate garden and the site is magnificent. After you check out their web site, come back here and post and let us know what you think. Welcome to Boston.

Don't forget Harvard's Arnold Arboretum, and the Mass Hort Society's Elm Bank Reservation, in Wellesley. There are some great gardens at Elm Bank.

I would suggest walking from Harvard Square up Brattle Street by all the mansions and their gardens. Maybe also check out some of the streets between Brattle and Huron. There are beautiful well landscaped houses all around. Actually exploring the side streets on a warm summer night can be magical. Many of these houses also have very tasteful landscape lighting.

There are also garden tours in different neighborhoods. I honestly have never done this but would love to see what is out behind some of those huge townhouses on Beacon Hill.

I would also recommend a visit to the DeCordeva museum in Lincoln. They always have very interesting unique art and the extensive grounds are a wonderful sculpture garden. It is a great place for a picnic.

Don't fail to look at the websites of two important historic organizations that maintain some of New England's most beautiful gardens. The gardens will be listed separately so you can check them out.

One is Historic New England.

And the other is The Trustees of Reservations. Website is www.thetrustees.org. Sorry I can't figure out how to add another link.

And don't miss the Danvers Historical Society's Glen Magna, north of Boston. A beautiful garden with the most beautiful summerhouse in the United States, designed and carved by Samuel McIntyre in the 1790s.

If you want great greenery, consider the Arnold Arboretum. It was created as a park by Olmsted, the genius behind Central Park in NY. The Arnold Arboretum is part of "the Emerald Necklace" of parks in the Boston area. It's set up to have all sorts of trees, shrubs, and flowers grow in year round.

I'd say it's the best park Boston has to offer (outside of Fenway park, that is!).

It's an awesome place for the botany buff, or just to stroll or picnic. Great for biking/rollerblading too!

Brattle Street (and the surrounding streets) around Harvard Square . . . while
you're over there, check out the incredible Mt. Auburn Cemetery, the first in this country actually landscaped as a garden!
