Where to go: gardener vacationing in Boston?
Comments (11)I would suggest walking from Harvard Square up Brattle Street by all the mansions and their gardens. Maybe also check out some of the streets between Brattle and Huron. There are beautiful well landscaped houses all around. Actually exploring the side streets on a warm summer night can be magical. Many of these houses also have very tasteful landscape lighting. There are also garden tours in different neighborhoods. I honestly have never done this but would love to see what is out behind some of those huge townhouses on Beacon Hill. I would also recommend a visit to the DeCordeva museum in Lincoln. They always have very interesting unique art and the extensive grounds are a wonderful sculpture garden. It is a great place for a picnic....See MoreWhere should I go on vacation?
Comments (3)Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. Lots of interesting and mature trees and numerous Champion trees. Get their address off the website and use Bing Maps to find it. I-75 exit 6 gets you in the ballpark. Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville is reportedly very good as well, but I've never been there so can't say for sure. Comments (36)Having had a few bear encounters in my day, that whole, "They're more afraid of you than you are of them" doesn't come to mind when you're staring in the face of a 300+ pound animal. You're never sure if your particular bear got the memo. The vacation sounds like a blast to me, but I'm Ms. Outdoorsey. But I know and understand that there are folks that just don't "do" rustic and there is no sense trying to make them into something they are not, I think respecting differences is very important. Way too bad about grandma. I have to say, BF's family sounds like a pretty close bunch, which I kinda like but could also be crazy! I grew up with sparse family, so I've always wanted to be part of a big boisterous clan, but if I had one I would probably wish the opposite! P.S. I think you should make BF a teddy bear cake!...See MoreNeed new A/C. Should we go with a heat pump?
Comments (5)Your electric rates are extremely high. Guessing you are in the upper Northeast. I pay 15 cents per kw-hr in Maryland, no tiered rates. Compare the cost of 1 million btu's of heat for heat pump vs oil furnace. Oil furnace w/oil at $3 per gallon, 80% efficient furnace: (1,000,000 / 139,000 btu per gallon) x $3 / .8 = $26.98 Heat pump with electricity at $.22 kw-hr, C.O.P. = 3.25 at 40F ambient: (1,000,000 / 3414 btu per kw) x $.22 / 3.25 = $19.82 The heat pump is 26% cheaper for the same 1 million btu's if you pay $3 gallon for oil and your oil furnace is 80% efficient. Insert your actual oil price and furnace efficiency for a more accurate cost comparison. As ambient temps rise from the 40F example, the C.O.P. (Coefficient of Performance) of the heat pump rises, and it is even cheaper to operate. The heat pump can indeed be used with an old oil furnace, they just can't run at the same time (furnace temps are too high). Same goes with a heat pump and gas furnace. The only time the furnace will run along with the heat pump is when the pump is in a defrost cycle. The furnace will run to temper the cold air from the indoor coil, while the outdoor coil gets hot refrigerant to defrost it. The VisionPro 8000 Series t-stat will run the heat pump as primary heat, then if the heat pump can't keep up with the indoor setpoint, it will turn the heat pump off and run the oil furnace to setpoint. You can also determine the switchover temp with the VisionPro if you have an outdoor temp probe for the t-stat. The contractor has to be comfortable with the heat pump install with an oil furnace. Maybe he doesn't do too many pumps in your area. Good luck....See Moresleeperblues
