Hosta 'Paul's Glory' has no pattern on leaves

Bought this hosta last fall. It was a larger one and I split it into 3 plants. All 3 survived and came up nicely this spring, but... there is no pattern on the leaves. They are all green, except, curiously enough, one single leaf on one of the divisions has the yellow/green pattern it had last year. Any ideas what might be wrong with it? Too much shade? The 3 divisions are sited around a birch tree and they have dappled shade much of the day, with some periods of sun and some of full shade during the day.

Pauls Glory does come up all blue-green solid and the gorgeous golden centers develope over the season. Give them a little time and see if they straighten out.

Mine hasn't colored much either, and it threw up one of those strange shoots some one posted about earlier. Right now it is one of my least favorite hostas in the garden. I like one of it sports - St Paul. It's a stronger grower and colors sooner.

I would love to get something more exotic, but given that there are no good nurseries around here, the norm is all I get. I always look, and almost everything offered is either something I don't want (like over-priced aureo-marginata) or something I now have. I won't mail-order again. I ordered 15 hostas from a well-known online hosta nursery 4 years ago when laying out my first shade bed, and what I got was a joke. Some of those plants have STILL only got 2 leaves. I've heard of "sleep, creep and leap", but I'm still waiting. The only thing that had grown much from that order has been the Golden Tiara. That has done well. I filled out the rest of the bed with potted ones I picked up whenever I saw something I liked, and those are all increasing well.

I decided to dig it up and see what was going on. It is planted in heavy soil and I couldn't brush it off to get a good look, so I hosed it off. The roots looked fine. I think it was too deep. I've replanted and I think the leaves look somewhat looser now. I hope it will rebound.

If it's not something you would buy, just hang on. Next year it will probably be gone. If you think it's something unique and people would pay money for, separate it and grow it out for a few years to see what it does. Hosta put out strange leaves all the time. A few are worth keeping, most are not that different from what's already available or very attractive. You get to make the call. bk

Is your hosta in mostly shade? I keep reading on this forum that they do need SOME sun to develop their pattern... So I am worried that it has too little sun...

There are often "off types" of Paul's Glory out there, and for this hosta, sun really doesn't play a factor in getting the center to color up.

I grow about a hundred Paul's Glory each year and there are always a couple that don't color up right away. I've also seen plants that barely get a center one year and then show it really well another. When I find these I remove them.

The largest, oldest clump of Paul's Glory that I have is one of these off types that takes the whole summer to show its color. I keep telling myself that one of these years I should keep a good one to replace it...

I was disappointed with my Paul's Gold at first, but it is developing more color now.

i cant recall .. but i think PG came from a blue plant.. anyone care to check that ....

if yours remains all blue.. then it is that plant ...

never heard of Paul's gold ...

It was a blue, ken
According to the Gray Book, it's a sport of 'Perry's True Blue', whose parentage is listed as unknown.
I have 2, one comes up with colors, although not pronounced, the other one emerges a blue/green and produces some variegation later on.

Wheaton Blue, I think, just to be precise, and there was a thread last year or so on this topic. My Paul's Glory began reverting/sporting to all blue last year; I split the plant to preserve the part that coloured up, but it is muted this year at best. I've just given up on it being a showpiece, and relegated it to the background - and have convinced myself that I have a new blue hosta as a bonus.

Yardenman probably made a typo error and means Paul's Glory. Never heard of Paul's Gold either....
One thing I have learned when I was a newbie is not to judge or evaluate any young hosta because it can change so much and so rapidly the following years....it's part of the fun...to watch them grow and see how they do year after year...
