Paul's Glory?
Comments (22)"Got proof, E.O.? :o)" janice Sally Grower sent the proof, I'm convinced I can tell the difference 100% of the time with 5+ year clumps. This is not to say that Gold Standard isn't a wonderful hosta and everyone "needs" one. The photo I would have taken if necessary would have been 6ft across with very little burn, that GS can sometimes have with a little to much light or short on water. Janice get a hold of yourself you've become a photo junkie. Were it not for hosta being God's gift I would refer you to I Kgs 12-28....See MorePaul's Glory & Sagae
Comments (12)I have just reread the posts here and feel I may have not made myself clear regarding Paul's Glory. I just don't happen to like gold in hostas. Personally, gold seems a "hot" color and I like our shade loving hostas to be cooling to my eye. So I have my Paul's Glory planted where it doesn't get intensely golden. For contrast I have in the "Glory" grouping the P.G, 'Old Glory', and the pale yellow/grn 'Blaze of Glory' and the 3rd year open pollinated seedling I'd found and Les named "Theresa's Glory". It has retained it's variegation stronger this season. It is still single eyed and hasn't flowered yet. I suspect it is from either P.G. or O.G. X 'Loyalist' which was potted between the two glories. All 3 were in bloom at the same time. "Theresa's Glory" has more ovate leaves but that might only be because she is so young. But her margins are wavy. I can hardly wait for next season. I don't recall either PG or OG producing pods., and I don't have the Loyalist. So if it does produce pods, Loyalist might be the pod parent. Does your PG produce pods? Comments (9)Moved top Paul's Glory to more sun last summer, the bottom pic with bigger leaves is in mostly shade and is a year older. You can see that sun really gave a boost to # of divisions in top pic. I've been told by a grower that typically hosta grown in shade will have larger leaves, while same grown in sun will have smaller leaves and shorter petioles. So far seems to be holding true. Comments (20)Several years ago I had young hostas 'Paradigm', 'Paul's Glory' and a division of an old 'Gold Standard' planted in a row, not knowing better (perhaps a 'Manhattan' in between). In early spring they looked alike to me, that was a confusing time. In a different part of the garden I had a young h.'Rainforest Sunrise', and that looked like a copy of the others though smaller. Now 'Paradigm' s leaves are wider and with wider darker border, and I planted 'Paul's Glory' elsewhere. I think someone needs to become a hosta connoisseur to appreciate these fine nuances in plants. There are a lot of potential duplicates in appearance, so it seems to me. Imagine planting all the greens with yellow borders in a group, etc. Have a good one!
