Abby, Golden Tiara, or Gold Standard to go with Paul's Glory?

I would like Pauls Glory in a sea of gold or blue. Picture the bluesh of Pauls Glory early in the season, turning gold in the center later, surrounded by blue or reverse the order gold with the early PG color. Remember PG is going to get quite large.

Gold Standard will be about as big as PG then neither will stand out.

I just went through this list the other day (difficult in the format it was in) and I have a question. The revision says 2004 - are there not more names that should be added? If so, does anyone know what they would be?

You are very welcome Jo I don't need much encouragement lol. Yes the view is great, a lot of the time the clouds are down and there is nothing there! The Gold standard would be in its third year or so planted from pot from garden centre so would have had 3 eyes minimum,What you think is carex behind is a clump of rushes (Juncus effusus)that has had the roundup treatment lol, terrible grass smothering invasive plant of acidic damp places, which is most of Ireland! from googling for the latin name I saw that some us nurseries sell it, if i could sell it I'd be a gazillionaire overnight! The carex is a great idea btw it will be done, thanks. My "living mulch" is moss and some bits of clover, every thing becomes covered in moss if you're not careful, I like it but you can have too much of a good thing, I want to have a lovely dark mulched bed, then I'll be happy. The natural environment locally is upland peat bog, my immediate area is a karst with a thin layer of peat, we have sinkholes and underground rivers and lakes,I will show a pic at the end of a view of the area from the top of my mountain. Yes quite a few are getting scapes, where does the time go,seems like a week ago I was prodding for pips . Abby stays small and cute, I just looked up Aristocrat I like it a lot is it a medium sized one? You are right that's Maui Buttercups, it has a little bit of sun scorch but she is ok, I wasn't sure if I liked gold hostas from the pictures so I got her and August Moon to see, I now want Krugerrand so they must have won me over. Footie is a very discerning cat lol. Raspberry Sundae was 1 eye last year and small ,2 eyes this year and larger leaves that what I was expecting and the colour as I didn't have it for spring last year, for a white centre its doing good. I got Big Daddy in the early spring and I had a fertle in the pot to see how many eyes there were I found 5 I think but more than that came up, I am very suprised at the size of him. Ya I'm sure MA will be ok there are new leaves appearing, thanks. Denis

Birchwood Parky's Gold is stunning as a mature plant- It is rather plain jane compared to some- but it mounds so nicely and is so full- standing tall and proud on it's tall stalks- and the thin heart shaped well rounded leaves will flutter a bit in the breeze from top to bottom of the mound- It will mature quickly- and is a tough cookie, not needing to be coddled. Gold Regal has more substance to it's larger leaves and can stand neglect- in the sun even! It is a slower grower- but it can stand being bumped around a bit- It even will look a bit "blue" as it seems to show a bit of a waxy look to it's leaves at times. I am waiting to see what Jimmy Crack Corn will do- but I am liking very much what I see so far... Dragon Tails is new to me this year- so I can not say much about it- other that it looks good in the pictures! Blue Angel is holding it's own, out in the woods, holding back the buckthorn without any help from me... It is 2 and starting to look very nice!! It is a strong grower- HHmmm- still thinking of only a few? Julie

Blue Cadets, sounds nice to me, remember the PG will be large. The Pauls Glory up next to the tree in the foregrond is about 5ft across.

Oh, nice pic! I'm glad I left plenty of room around PG. I keep having to remind myself not to plant anything in that empty space.

I should have said...this small garden is mostly things like purple and silver heucheras; it has a color scheme of chartruese (the hosta and Key Lime heucheras), purple, and silver. No blue.

I do have lots of blues in a different garden; one that uses all colors of hosta. I have another Gold Standard in that bed, which is nowhere as big as PG. But everything in that bed grows slower (drier there and more roots, I think).

I definitely want something that will stay smaller than PG.

I would love to get something more exotic, but given that there are no good nurseries around here, the norm is all I get. I always look, and almost everything offered is either something I don't want (like over-priced aureo-marginata) or something I now have. I won't mail-order again. I ordered 15 hostas from a well-known online hosta nursery 4 years ago when laying out my first shade bed, and what I got was a joke. Some of those plants have STILL only got 2 leaves. I've heard of "sleep, creep and leap", but I'm still waiting. The only thing that had grown much from that order has been the Golden Tiara. That has done well. I filled out the rest of the bed with potted ones I picked up whenever I saw something I liked, and those are all increasing well.

I'll look for Mary Anne; maybe I'll page her with her name in a posting! I don't want to diss them, maybe my experience was not usual; it was Direct Source Hostas, which I had read about here: it was supposed to be good. The irony is this place is only 5 minutes from my house, but they do not sell at their location, only ship.

I used the Abby, Golden Tiara, and Gold Standard elsewhere after all. Decided to keep looking.

Picked up "Remember Me" yesterday. Not the reverse of PG, as I had in mind; but I thought it was a nice bright golden color. I also needed something that would stay small. How about this one?

Hi Linnea,
My mature PG is huge at least 4ft across.
I have near mine a Sea Fire. Sea Fire comes up bright gold in the spring then tames down to a light green.
In the spring PG is green and gently turns to it's fantastic color as the season progresses. I like green perennials near by to contrast with it's color variation.
Besides SF there is a Royal Standard behind it. It all blends well. Twighlight would also be a nice compliment to PG. Stick with the solids to bring out the beauty of this hosta. Just my opinion.

IU would be planting a lot more than "a companion" plant to PG...
I like it with Sum and Substance, Squash Casserole and something fairly large and blue...Love Pat is good one. I have it with Elegans and I am afraid it will get too large.
Then I will tuck in some little light green things, like Kabitan....and a little blue thing...like that nameless one in the front bed! LOL! Don't know what it is but it's little, neat and blue...had it fora ges.
I think if you want to feature Paul's glory, you don't want to plant anything that mirrors it or is also varigated in any way. I think you want to plant solid colors with interestingly shaped leaves.

Hi Linnea-
A great source for hosta's outside Chicago is Sid's Greenhouse in Palos Hills. They have a very nice selection of healthy, 1 gallon hostas.

I also received my first mail order hostas from Bluestone Perennials - June and Regal Splendor - they look great! Not a huge selection but the plants are super.

Linnea: Direct Source is only three minutes from MY house - so where the heck are you? I'd be happy to go with you to some of my favorites - one is in Woodstock nearer to Harvard - it's called 'Deep Cut Perennial Farm'. Prices are way less than the stupid nurseries around here. And I was at Hornbakers this week with GW hostasforme Connie and went crazy - yes, it's an hour and a half, but worth the drive and splitting gas $$ helps. CALL ME! 815-404-1150 and we'll go shopping.
