Hi,I have plenty of slash pines on my property & if you are ever up in central Florida,then you could come & dig up 3 or 4 trees.I think your biggest issue would be trying to dig up any tree over about 4' high,because the tap root goes very deep.I have re-located some small pines,maybe 2' & they already had a tap root the same length.

Well, I certainly appreciate that and I might take you up on that offer! Hmmm...so digging up a FL Pine may be difficult, eh? I knew there must be a reason that i see them EVERYWHERE all wild...but to buy them seems like a big, expensive ordeal!

The big problem with large field grown Pines (if there is such a thing?) would be the tap root. Pines are better off being planted small and letting them grow. Slash Pines will grow like rockets under the right conditions. I've heard that planting a large Pine tree is NOT good to do as the tap root will not be there to hold them up during windy conditions. I will say this... I remember the pics of your Pines you posted before and can tell you that they were not healthy stock and were probably very root bound and had been growing in small pots for WAY too long. I have 1 that I picked up, similar to yours, a couple years or so back and the smaller, healthy ones I bought just over a year ago have rocketed past this one by 2-3 ft already and they were 2 ft shorter when I bought them and that's just in a year or so's time. Try to search for some quality trees in pots and you'll do much better. I'm attaching a link for you. just went to that site...can't wait to contact them tomorrow! I see they have wholesale and retail. Will I be able to buy wholesale? My husband has a business...maybe if he buys thru the business we can get wholesale prices? I am not sure how that works (not really expecting you to know...just thinking out loud.) I did not see prices...can you take a guess at how much one of those trees will cost?

Oh, I see...I am sorry...I misread your post. I though you said that the original (royal crest) link you provided was your friend's nursery where there are wholesale prices. Sorry! Well, the royal crest link you provided says they also sell retail...guess I gotta see what those prices are! My husband's business has nothing to do with trees...or maybe it does? He is an asphalt paving contractor, does mainly commercial work. Hmmm...

Thanks again for your help. For some reason, I always dreamed of owning some property (LOL, I only have an acre, but in south Fla, that is kind of considered "propertÿ") and having Fl Slash Pines in my yard. I just love them. I cannot explain why.

dm - As bad as the economy is, many nurseries will sell at wholesale prices to anyone with cash and a pickup truck. If you have a lawn maintenance service, have them buy you the trees. Go with them to pick them up and pay cash. If not, use your color printer, make up some business cards, and go get your trees.

Royal Crest does sell certain things to the public, but their list is very limited. I've been there a couple times once with my friend and once on my own and they sold me a Sabal Minor, but it was VERY high compared to what he pays! He can get you anything you want... he's got stuff for me before, just ask! Call Royal Crest tomorrow and see what they say... if you have any trouble... contact Wallace at his website and I'm sure he'll be glad to help you out.

So did you get the Slash Pines/ Now I want some too and wondered what you ended up buying and how much did you pay??

I'm from SC, where a lot of lumber and pulpwood pines are grown, and I know a bit about them. Most pines are planted as 6-10 inch plants. They grow better if they can develop that tap root in the ground. Anything larger than 12" is too big. I think most of them are planted by machine now, but used to be men would carry sacks of seedlings over their shoulders and spend long hours in the fields with a hand mattok, slashing a hole, sticking in a seedling, and moving on. They could plant literally acres a day. It was a sight to behold, they went so fast. You never would have believed those little pine seedlings would have lived, but most of them did. The best way to plant a pine tree is to plant the seeds right in the hole and thin out all but the strongest one. Those are the ones that will withstand a storm.

As far as slash pines are concerned, they hate fertilizer, so if you planted them into a lawn that gets constant fertilization, they will likely die anyway.

We're in Ocala and have some property in the Ocala National Forest. Each Jan/ Feb. We buy bare root seedling (long leaf pine) to replenish the land. I've included a link to the nursery that supplies to us.

They carry slash pine, cypress and a few others. Perhaps it's too large a quantity, but I thought listing this resource might help.

I'm having the same problem. I just want a few Slash pine to fill in around some older ones that are starting to drop limbs. The few places that actually had any were charging a mint. Most places say there's no market for them as they grow everywhere. Same with Palmettos. I did try transplanting a few very small ones from a neighbors yard before he mowed them down, but they didn't take, so I think I need container grown plants that don't seem to exist!

Those dang things keep trying to grow in my orchard and I'm always yanking them out.
They also try to grow along the fence line where the wind blows the seeds.
This area was mostly just pines and oaks when I first settled here.
