So how cold did it get in your garden?

It was 34 at 7:30 this am here in my garden. No real plant damage that I can see but frost on the windshields and in the open areas. When it warms up some more I will take a closer look.

It was 28 degrees here at 7:00am. Chilly :)

No real damage since the plants that would be most unhappy with frost went into the greenhouse yesterday.

Warmer outside than in the house this morning. I saw a toad shivering in my herb garden, so I am guessing it was a chilly night. I actually got the space heater out last night and plugged it in on the patio. Went back outside and there was dennis and both cats huddled near it.

Tony, when should I give my lil tree some fert? I am leaving it in the pot until next spring.

We had colder weather here today and yesterday than we did on Monday. Monday morning's low was 49, but yesterday and today it got down to 45 degrees, and in certain spots in my yard it is 3 or 4 degrees colder, and so I do not put anything sensitive there. I keep orchids outside all winter, and they are doing okay, but they are in the warmest part of the back yard and are semi-protected. I have basil and tomato plants in pots next to the house, and they are doing well. I seem to get more tomatoes in the winter than I do in the summer. None of my Kalanchoes have ever gotten damaged, and I have some of the in the coldest parts of the yard. The heliconias never get damaged either.

Typically, in coastal So. Cal, we get don't get any frost. That's the reason we can't grow apples, cherries and most stone fruits and expect any fruit. In years we do get frost, they happen only once or twice a year for about 3 days each episode. In November, our night temps are in the low 50's. The coolest months as are December - February. But I've had tomatoes ripen in January. A guy in Fullerton, 10 miles inland, had a Sungold tomato grow from one side of the garage over the top onto the other side. I can't remember what year, but he planted it in May and removed it the following March. During frost episodes, I've lost pounds of almost ripe tomatoes and 3' tall corn plants. One thing frost does do is kill off the pesky crab grass and bermuda grasses, and reduces the spread of killer bees. I actually welcome it. My friend who lived in Long Beach had an elderly neighbor who died of a heart attack when he got stung by killer bees. They homed in his firewood pile. The strange thing was, this man was a beekeeper. Oops, I digressed. The cole crops and especially the collards seem to taste better with a light frost. I think back in the 90s, there was a cold wave with a Canadian blast coming through. It got into the mid 20s, which I think is the coldest I've ever felt here.

Rosebud, really like your unnamed caladium. I like pink but the reason I like Red Flash so much is that they are big and make a big statement. I have four kinds that I ordered form Caladiums 4 Less a few year ago, they are in Florida. What I love about caladiums is the fuss people make because they are unusual here though common in Florida. The neighbors says they argued about whether or not they were real before walking across the street to touch them. People ask what they are. I know the 'don't know a petunia from and iris crowd'. The name is fancy and their eyes glaze a little when I say it. Helen they are as easy as Rosebud says. I start them all together in shallow tubs of potting soil under the shop windows. I don't think they need much light either, it's more about warm soil. They transplant easily, I just pull them up with a fork after they start leafing out and stick them in their summer pots. They are now in orange boxes in my closet. I use shredded office paper provided by security freak DH. They won't freeze here. I have to be careful about 'cold damage' to the bulb, I always sort the caladiums to store. Rosebud's sorting after they leaf out is a great idea. Caladiums for less offers 2lbs of unnamed mixed bulbs. I may try that for fun since I already have some nice named ones. Sorry to hear that the wonderful hosta are gone. Caladiums in pots under the walnut tree would be hard for hot dogs to lay on in the summer. The pictures were great.

Hooray, Sherry, I knew you were going to cave in and plant agarden eventually. IT comes with the canning! Jessica, I didn't have very good luck with the golden beets either, although I did get about a dozen big enough to eat. I'm wondering if they are "particular" about temperature or soil type. My Detroit dark reds were planted in the same row and did just fine. Hmmmm, you know how I am with a challenge, I might have to plant some again, I had beet "chips" at a restaurant over my birthday and of course, I just loved the darned things, they were deepfried. Sigh. Golden beet fries might make a nice color contrast.... I couldn't find any of those sungolds, and I was disappointed. Dang, I just love those things! Annie

Here it was about 37. No real damage,Just a little nip from jack frost. I was out side before the sun hit the plants and I hose the more delicate plants.

I regestered 54 outdoors while the shadehouse said 62. I put in a water heating system last year. Seems to work !! At least if it's not really cold lol gary

Low 40's here in Sarasota. My gingers look burnt and very sad. I hate to see them go.

I had 29F near my greenhouses that didn't have plastic on them yet, and 34 up near the house (that is 3 feet higher in elevation)in my cold little pocket in north Lakeland. We have never had a freeze before the last day in November so I wasn't ready. I have rare bananas, zamias, and some touchy palms in the one greenhouse but I'm sure I won't see what really has happened to them for another month or two.

Yeah, cycad, according to Hawk Ridge wx station it hit 34 at 7:30. Got a little lucky and watered that day but don't think it did a lot of good. Like you, we'll see.

38 'round here in North Tampa.

I don't have a great deal that would be damaged by anything less than a hard freeze or heavy frost, neither of which last night was. Hope everyone made it through this early cold spell OK. Still, walking about the neighborhood last night, WOW! it was quite refreshing!

I only had 30, no damage to speak of, but it was supposedly 27 at the airport (Gainesville) and 25 at a friend's in High Springs.

Gosh, I don't think we had a freeze here in Sanford at all. Nothing was damaged in my yard, and it wasn't frosty when I got up at 8:00am. I'm surprised at how cold it was for many of you. Cindee, you and your Chronic Chill disease! hehehe. We have never turned on the heat in this house, and we have been here 3 1/2 years. I'm not even sure if it WORKS! When it went down in the 20's last year, we had a fire in the evening, let it die down at bedtime, and nothing else. I just wear a sweater if the house is chilly.

Mark says he pays through the nose to keep this house freezing for me all summer. He prefers to freeze for FREE in the winter! ;o)

I'm wearing shorts again, too. Actually, I was wearing them by noon yesterday. This is MY kind of weather, and I'm sorry the thermometer is going up again. (I DON'T like it to freeze and kill plants, but I'm perfectly happy with nights in the 30's or 40's and days in the 60's or low 70's.)

Had 28 and yes every tender is just about done for. Of course the things that wouldn't come back are in pots and moved into the enclosed porch. Yes I've learned what survives here in Citrus County, and without help it is not citrus

Cold? It was cold?

Sorry you guys. My cold was about 56, and it only lasted til the sun came up and the wind died down.

But at least we weren't sweatin'....had just about enough of that mess.

My thermometer here in St Pete read 49 on Saturday morning. We had 47 on Friday morning.

The growth of my two banana plants has slowed drastically over the past month. The gingers are starting to look a little raggedy. Everything else is still looking happy.

It was pretty chill here. Have a good story...

I went out to the garden and on the top of a green bean plants was a little green lizard. He was pretty frozen. I picked him up, I didn't figure he was dead, because rigomortis had not set in. but he was unresponsive.

I held him between my hands as I walked the rest of my garden. When I was done walking he was still too cold to move, so I started blowing into my hands to warm him up. Finally he started moving slowly. After a few minutes he was back to normal, so I opened my hands to let him go.. And he bit me!! The ungrateful little lizard! Thankfully he was just a little guy, so the bite was bening at best!
