please help me get rid of nostoc algae in horse pasture!!

PLEASE, I beg of you!!! From my mad googling skills I have figured out is is Nostoc Algae. I believe it is "nostoc commune." It is a very dark green, gelatinous blobby specimen that is literally all over my pasture. It is a small pasture that used to be a sand arena to ride and train horses in. From what I gather, this nostoc grows in sandy soil with thin turf. We have had tons of rain lately in south Fl and it doesn't seem to go away even on sunny days, although it does dehydrate a bit. I started to pick it up while wearing rubber gloves but it is on every square foot of this small (half acre) pasture. It will take forever, plus I don't know if I am getting it all.

I keep reading that it is safe, that it is even edible for humans...then i read noooo, that's crazy talk, it turns toxic, it is actually a bacteria, etc etc etc.

So if someone has a method or a substance I can spray on or sprinkle on or whatever to eradicate this nasty stuff? Something that will be safe for the horses to graze on. It has been over two weeks and the horses are missing their pasture! Thanks for any help you can offer!

Although it would be a good idea to call your county extension office first, copper sulfate is used to treat stock water containers for algae. I would think it would be safe to use on the pasture, too. We have had this same thing in a small area of our lime-rock driveway and it is nasty and slippery. I sprayed it with bleach water but of course you wouldn't be able to use that.

Do not use cooper on the soil. It builds up heavy metals in the soil. Bayer makes a Moss and algae killer you can spray on it. Be sure to read the directions carefully.

First the disclaimer. Horses are a touchy subject because there are so many people with different levels of experience, and different methods, and feelings get hurt easy. Anyway. Horses learn to be bad very easy. They also learn to be good, but need a good person to teach them. Horses that come from a trainer can be good, and then when with their owners who don't know as much, they start to be bad. Horses are always being taught something, everyday, but it is difficult to realize what you (ourselves) are teaching them. Horses are herd animals and want to be with their buddies more than anything. Even if they fight. As to the fighting, separating them before they sort things out is not generally a good idea. Eventually, one of the horses will give in and say "uncle" and then they won't fight so much. Of course, in the couple minutes to an hour that may take, one of the horses could get seriously wounded, but that is the risk you take. Sometimes, there are reasons to keep fighting, like everyday the food shows up and the weaker one doesn't get out of the way fast enough. Having a pen that is too small is a problem, because the weaker one needs to get out of the way. So if you keep having problems, I bet your pen is too small. And when you feed, you need to grab the boss first and tie him until he's not so hungry and cranky. Also, you need to feed hay in two locations about 20 feet apart. A horse that bites doesn't know that the person is the boss. There are different ways to show a horse who is boss (and this is where horse people really fight with each other). My suggestion is an everyday approach, keeping in mind that every day horses are learning from you, good or bad. Your interaction must require him to submit to you. He can't point is butt to you, he can't feed without you telling him it is ok. He can't walk in your space. And he certainly can't bite you. If he is doing those bad things, then don't feed him that moment, don't let him stand still that moment. Work him by moving him out from you. In a round pen, you would work him around and around. You on ground, you with whip, you motioning for him to get moving. But be very quick to recognize good behavior and instantly reward it. In a round pen, the reward is letting him stop, letting him come nicely to you. If not working in a round pen, if not using a whip to move him, at least get a hold of him and not let him eat until he stands nice for you. Then say "ok" and let him eat. Every day. Every darn day. Take this approach to everything you do with the horse. If the horse is being bad, don't tolerate it. Is the goal to ride the horse or is it to have a good horse? If the horse is being bad while saddling, address that. Don't just skip over that part to get to the riding. Also, look for things that might be pinching him, because it might be your fault if the saddle doesn't fit. In my view, hitting a horse is a waste of time. Not saying you are hitting, but just wanted to say. Instead, you have to outlast him. Go slow, and praise the good behavior. When bad behavior happens, do it again, do it again, do it again, when good behavior happens praise him. Do what again and again? Do whatever it is that is causing the bad behavior. Take saddle off and put it back on, take saddle off and put it back on, when he doesn't bite then praise him and go onto the next step. Get the picture of the tediousness of the battle day in and day out? That's what I mean by outlasting. The mistake, in my mind, is when people say "oh, forget it, let's just get onto the next step". That's when the horse wins and gets away with it. By the way, there are no bad horses. Just bad teachers. Every person who interacts with the horse is a teacher. You, your husband, your kids, you are all teachers. What are you teaching the horse every day?

Just a point of clarification regarding hydrogen peroxide, the typical concentration that you buy in the drugstore or supermarket is 3% not 0.03% unless you wish to express it on a decimal weight basis then it is 0.03 wgt/wgt. Typical concentrations that work well for removing string algae (but not effective on suspended algae) are about 1-2 pints of 3% per 1000 gallons although doses as high as 1 pint per 100 gallons has been used with no reported adverse effects to common goldfish (comets) and koi or typical plants in the pond. When you add hydrogen peroxide the reactions are fast but not instantaneous; the rate reactions result in the initial formation of water and atomic oxygen which has numerous side reactions one of which is with itself then resulting in the formation of the typical diatomic oxygen molecule or it can react with various catalytic agents to form a highly reactive compound known as a hydroxyl radical. Commercial/industrial hydrogen peroxide varies in concentration from 8% to 60% or more with the very high concentrations having a viscosity approaching a heavy syrup. The exact mode of operation on algae is not clear but there are several concepts floating around about lysing of cellular attachment, etc. When it is added to a pond it does not mix instantly. In fact, best results are achieved by adding in the immediate area where the string algae exits. Therefore the concentrations that are present are much higher than what would be predicted by simply calculating the amount added divided by the total pond volume. In swimming pools using Bacquacil (a quaternary amine disinfectant) hydrogen peroxide is sometimes used to remove chlorine (hypochlorous acid, chloramines) but at vastly higher doses - gallons of 10-12% added to a pool. Hydrogen peroxide can be used for disinfection but again at very high doses. However, for string algae control the dose used is not meant for disinfection but to disrupt the string algae which it does with very good effect. The down side is that the resulting "soup" will exhibit a high oxygen demand (BOD) and you will have another algae bloom resulting from the release of nutrients. For these reasons it is important to remove as much of the string algae as possible by hand before treatment and to have plants available or other means for taking up the released nutrients (or flushing them out). Henry, if you intend to operate a pond without circulation, without filtration, etc..... all the things suggested by Horton and Sandy... then your pond will continue to present you with problems. It is possible to have a pond with no circulation or biofilter per se but as also mentioned you'll need lots of plants such as water hyacinths and/or water lettuce to take out nutrients (consider them as a floating biofilter if you will). I have seen such ponds but you can only support one or two comets - i.e., a very few - and not feed them any food. Plus you need to balance the shade/sunlight issue: enough to keep the WH going but not so much as to help the algae too much. When I rebuilt my pond this year I repotted all my aquatic plants by removing and washing off all the soil and then planting them into peagravel (in baskets). Some of the plants I put directly into a section of peagravel in the pond (no baskets). Its been 3 months now, and everything is so slow... very little growth. I was starting to think that maybe this wasn't such a good idea. With the fish chomping away on the roots of the floaters, and then the lilies and mariginals hardly growing and providing very little coverage, I'm also battling with water thats too warm and lots of algae. (Geez... I wish the fish would eat all that algae and leave the roots alone!!) Anyways, I was starting to think this was a bad idea, when I talk to the guy at the pond shop/nursery who told me that putting the plants in peagravel is the new way of thinking and is actually much better in the long run as the plants are truly hydroponic. He said I might not get much leaf and flower growth this year, but the roots are getting established and are getting used to taking the nutrients from the water instead of soil. (I can see the roots have grown alot when I lift up the baskets). Next year and the future years, I should have good growth, and the plants will be strong with much larger blooms than if I had left them in soil. So perhaps it just takes some time and patience... its definetely frustrating. I rebuilt my pond this spring and I can't wait for it to look more filled in (even just a bit more..)... sometimes is embarrassing when people see the new pond and all I have are piddly plants and lots of algae....

18 months after converting my patchwork lawn to just about 100% Tall Fescue (cheap/tough K31 at that). I have so few spots of CC I just hand pull it occasionally while mowing my lawn and at that it just seems like finesse. The seed is inexpensive and has gotten the job done with several overseedings after a scorching cutting. My strategy was to think "below ground." Kentucky Bluegrass, for example, has a shallow weak root system. One selling feature is the vigorous surface roots that enable it to spread in to bare spots. This behavior is essential identical to CC at the macro-level. Cheap K-31 grass operates in a different manner. The roots are very deep and the plant prefers to be a bit tall (usually 4" mowings for me) not creepy. I ammended soil pretty deep in areas of poor topsoil. It germinates quickly and establishs to a "bigger" potential much later. But once established -- it is harder to kill then CC. Thats how I eliminated CC. I let the K31 get strong then beat up my lawn pretty badly but with just a few moments of consideration just prior. Mowing it short in heat, mowing at varying heights that "didn't make sense", letting it get tall for some periods. K-31 if you want cheap, extremely durable, weed-free turf --consensus is just overseed it every other year. KGB if you aim to have a prettier but very high maintance lawn requiring extra water, chemicals/organics, and attention with less need to overseed for thick turf. My only question for some of the posts is what kind of grass and what kind of conditions exist and shooting for. Best of luck with whatever grass species!

Thank you for the responses. I will look into the copper to see if that is a possibility but sounds like it won't be. I googled bayer m&a killer and it got pretty poor reviews, but I will try it anyway.

If anyone else has suggestions, please share. I am thinking mowing it would be bad...right? what about pouring salt on it?? Like kosher salt or rock salt? I mean, it would take a whole lotta salt....

Hi again! I called Bayer to make sure it is safe for horses to graze. He had to send my inquiry to some other department. he said it may be 2-3 days before I get my answer, but he is guessing 14-30 days. i had told myself that whatever number they gave me, I would wait some extra time, but to wait over a month is really not possible (well, i mean, I can't turn them out with the algae in the pasture, so of course it *IS* possible...i am just kind of frustrated right now!)

I just am questioning the safety. I am really bummed and would love any other suggestions. Thanks!

Did you try contacting your local extension office?? They deal a lot with farmers and ranchers and should know what the safest, easiest solution would be. There is a lot of stuff on the web on the danger and toxicity of ingestion of certain algae by livestock. So I don't blame you for being desperate for a solution quickly.

yes, I will. Good idea. Thanks for that suggestion, although I am reading this in Saturday, and Monday is Columbus Day. I finally heard back from Bayer, they said the pasture would be safe 24 hours after spraying. I am still a little (a lot)paranoid though.

We have had cooler, drier weather for a few days now. Most of the Nostoc is black and dried up/crunchy underfoot. I tried to rake it up but it just breaks up, plus takes forever. I am wondering if dried Nostoc is no longer "living" and therefore safe...or maybe it now has concentrated properties and is *worse??* I may start a new thread asking about that.

The weather is so pretty and I would love to see the horses out there, enjoying it!

FYI, the horses are NOT stalled, they have stalls attached to large shady paddocks and can go in and out at will. If all I had were stalls I would be borrowing a friends' pasture to make sure they got out to graze and stretch their legs. I just want to make that clear.

gosh, this thread makes it sounds like it would be GOOD for horses. I don't know what to make of all this information. I called my vet about it when i first saw it...she said to keep the horses off the pasture...but sometimes I wonder if they advise that "just in case?" I don't want to be an idiot and not listen to the vet, but then again, if she is just making sure nothing comes back to bite her in the butt and she is not SURE it is bad for horses...then I want to continue researching.

I've got it growing all over my crushed shell drive. I've raked it up, but it just comes back. I sprayed it with a bleach solution, and that seemed to dry it up a little, but not much. Someone suggested sprinkling it with boraxo. I didn't try that as I have dogs and didn't want it getting on their feet. We haven't had rain for a few days now and it it starting to dry up.

Thanks for the quick reply, echobelly! I guess I cannot use either things you mentioned due to the horses, correct? Have you tried the Bayer Moss and Algae killer?

I am also trying to confirm whether Nostoc Commune is bad for horses or safe. If it is safe, then I am fine to turn them out with the algae still out there.

Just a thought. How big is the field? Is this growing over the grass or smothering it? If it's some scary stuff, would it be worth it to just scrape the whole danged thing with a bobcat and reseed?

I changed our grasses where the animals are from Bahia to Bermuda as bermuda helps dysentery, thus actually giving animals something worthwhile when they go seeking grass for digestion, cats, dogs, crazy pony that escapes from her farm a half mile away and stands at my gate waiting to play with my dog, who's danged near big as that pony, lol.

I don't know much about it, but if it's going to be like a spore thing that never goes away without removing the topsoil, would scraping it down and starting over the winter help? Just a thought.

We suffered for years with nostoc on our driveway. We tried every weed killer we could find, copper sulfate, lime, buring it off and even spray painting it (we were desperate). Someone recommended baking soda so we tried it on a small patch and it WORKED! The stuffed turned brown after a few days to a week (we have found brown is the dead color - black is the just waiting for more water color). We then bought big bags of bicarbonate of soda from the local feed store and spread it on the driveway using a drop spreader. It is working!!! We will play with concentrations of dissolving it in water and spraying once the major "kill" is done - but we would highly recommend trying it.

Baking soda will kill crabgrass, too. Much cheaper than RoundUp.

Borax shouldn't hurt the dogs. I put it on my yard every year for fleas, and my cats were fine. Actually, I take 1/8 tsp of borax every day. It's not any more toxic than table salt.
