Algae Question

Hi. I have a huge algae problem and need some advice. Last year a heron got all my fish and this year I broke my ankle so my pond is a mess. No fish and filled with algae. I'm thinking why not pour in pool chemicals and get rid of the algae and when everything is clear, reconstitute the pond. Is there a better way to clear out all this algae? Also, what about the sludge on the bottom? Is it OK to leave it or should I remove it? I hate the thought of draining the entire pond. Thanks. BTW, I'm on the rose forum and use the pond water to feed the roses. Henry
