Algae on pond liner. Question....
Comments (12)albartsch, The obvious question is coming; how long have you had your pond? I've seen people mentioned here and else where that a pond takes a year or more to mature. My pond has gone through three clear / green/ brown / clear cycles since I started it up in October. Sometimes it just takes time, and patience. Allow for the beneficial bacteria to catch up. Don't feed your fish for awhile, clean out any floating debris on your pond surface, check to see that your UV is working right (Not burnt out -UV loses a lot of its effectiveness when it runs through a heavy green sheet), and make sure your filters are free of build-up. And one day, you'll come out and BAM; it's clear. LP...See MoreAlgae bloom question
Comments (2)I have been fighting algal blooms forever. Anacharis will control it to some extent BUT the best device is a barrel filter from a graden supply store. It is a couple hundred dollars but it works. You can put it away from the pond in vegetation and cover the hoses with mulch. Algae will bloom as a result of sunlight and it is a natural phenomenon in the spring when the water warms up. I examined my pond water microscopically a few years ago and found lots of euglena. That's a flagelated protozoan with chlorophyll and it makes its own food. If you get a lot of them and the water warms up they will use a lot of the Oxygen in the water and if it gets too hot goldfish will die. I have a waterfall to handle this problem. That and the barrel filter keeps the water clear....See MoreAlgae + Stream question
Comments (14)I don't know about cokeisit, but I have used Green Clean several times in my stream and pond with good success. It is kind of messy in that it foams and you need to skim the foam/dead algae up. It works especially well on string algae in streams, but I always turn the flow off to keep the foam from flowing into the pond until I can clean the stream; streams are also especially susceptible to string algae. I do believe it does some harm to other plants-I don't know if I have lost any plants, but they seem to suffer some damage. It is a very strong oxidizer and actually "burns" the algae. Hydrogen peroxide is also an oxidizer and uses the same process, but I think it is weaker (I believe 3% solution in drug stores); I have also used it, more as a control than as a cleaner. You can get stronger peroxide at hair salons. Also, a non-chlorine pool chemical, Baquacil, makes Baquashock, which is, I believe a 30% hyd. perox. solution. If you use it, it has to be diluted (I don't know how much), because it will also harm plants and fish, if you have them. Also, don't get it on your skin, because it will burn that also. And, no, I don't now, never have, worked in any way with pond or chemical cos. and don't own any stock in them. Comments (35)Kathie, this is going to be of absolutely no help to you right now, but I swear I have your foyer's cousin at my home. I don't have the two "closets" on either side of the entry door. I do have the open space to one side as you do, but where you have the french doors, mine is a solid wall. Everything else looks just like yours. As I said, cousin but not exactly a twin to yours. I have that ledge up there just as you do....oh, and all the oak, too. Okay, all that is nice huh? Problem is I am not at this particular house right now....I am at our lake home that we have been remodeling for the last two years. I may get to our other home next week and if hubby can teach me how to take and post pics, I will show you my foyer. I have the most adorable "circus people" on my ledge...hard to imagine I know. I have a curio cabinet where your grandfather clock is right now. I will say I think my space was little easier to work with as I didn't have as many open spaces as you do. Anyway, if you want and can think of it, remind me to show you your foyer's cousin. HA! It might give you a few ideas...or at the very least, be a little bit fun. Happy Decorating...it never seems to end, ya know pup...See More- 15 years ago
