Atlas Strong Shoulder Mason Jar

Found one in a mixed case of pint jars that someone gave me. Love it! Taller than a Ball or Golden Harvest and smaller diameter. Weighs more:

Atlas 10.4 oz

Ball 8.8 oz

Golden Harvest 8.9 oz

Clear glass and doesn't appear to be an antique. Regular pint lids and rings fit. Does anyone here know of a source for these or other unusual shape/size modern jars suitable for canning? A quick google search gave only antique sources & I don't want to pay much more than price for the Ball etc.

Yes, I love mine as well. Picked up a few more of these when a neighbor was cleaning out Grandparents basement.
Sorry, the company went out of business in 1964.
I have quite a collection of vintage jars for various sizes that I have collected over the years. Mainly from older folks who didn't can anymore or families emptying basements.
Any strong shoulder ones I grab right away.

I like the new Elite Collection from Ball, although pricy. The pint size one is similar to the vintage one they used to make, close but I still like the original one, only have 3 left.

You may want to post a notice at a local Senior Action Center to see if anyone has some.

I am 70 and have canned all my life. I have used mayonnaise jars all my life and are still using ones I have canned in for years. I have NEVER lost but one jar and it was a canning one. The trick to using mayonnaise jars is only can things that do not have to be processed very long like tomatoes for instance. Right now, I am cleaning up some jars that were given to me yesterday. One can never have enough jars. They gave me a lot of old jelly glasses and most of them look like new and still have the caps on them. I thought about putting jelly in them and using paraffin to seal them unless I can find some new seals for them. It will be worth a try. He gave me several gallon jars also and I use them with my Food Saver to keep dry ingredients in. If you add a bay leaf to flour etc. it keeps them bug free. Hi, I actually collect canning jars (a.k.a. fruit jars). I've found the "Red Book of Fruit Jars 9" to be quite useful. You might be able to take your fruit jars with you to an antique store and if they have the book behind the counter as a reference they may let you look up your jars. I bought my copy for about 20 dollars. Oh, as a side note, the book is paperback and red (of course :-P ). Cindy

Glad to see that someone looked up part of what I was talking about. ((big grin)) We just happened to attend the Sun Belt Ag Expo yesterday. It is billed as the world's largest agricultural exposotion. In other words, most manfacturer's who are connected with the dirt aspect of growing crops have an exhibit set up there as well as several universities/colleges who specialize in ag courses, FFA, several government agencies including FDA/USDA! Soooo, I stopped to ask the guy manning the booth if there were still percentages of all that nasty stuff allowed into our food...reply, "Oh sure! They just differ with most different products." So I asked if he had a chart, "Nooo! But you could probably get something if you went to our web site or called the 800# and told them specifically what you wanted!" I think he was assuming that I was going to produce a product and was wanting to know how clean I had to keep my facilities. Then he mentioned....we (the United States) have to comply with every other country's laws/standards when exporting ag products into them...HOWEVER, we have no such requirements for incoming ag products...this includes our fresh fruits/veggies we purchase at local grocery stores. That means those countries could still be using DDT and we would have NO way of knowing. That concerns me more that some mice doodoo!

I agree with Carol. It makes no sense to can demiglace. Indeed, unless you use it on a regular basis, it makes little sense to make it at all. Not that it doesn't do its job. It does, with a vengeance. Just think of it as concentrated beef (veal, venison, chicken)flavor. What you have to answer is, "how often do I use that sort of concentrated mix." If you canned it, even in a baby food size jar, you would still need to refrigerate after opening, because, as Carol notes, a little goes a long, long way. So if you do make it, just refrigerate it to begin with. Personally, I don't bother. What I do is freeze stock, and use it as the base for soups, stews, and sauces as necessary. If I do need a more concentrated flavor (which is rare; my stocks already are pretty flavorsome) I merely boil down the stock first.

I think those Elite 1/2 pint squat pints any product looks great in them. The roasted red peppers I just did look so purdy.
Problem is, if I give some for xmas giving I NEVER get those jars back!

We have several of the old Atlas ones too, various types and shapes. And yes even the clear glass ones are antiques - valuable collectibles - tho not as valuable as the various etched ones. We have switched ours to dry storage or display only rather than risk them in canning.

I have some Atlas jars and also some other old brands. I still use mine for canning but limit it to boiling water bath.

My favorite "shape" are the squatty pint and half-pint Ball Specials. They're kind of a precursor to the Elite jars now being sold (at a considerable premium).

I gave away a lot of the old blue canning jars. I don't like the color. We do have many blue and clear bail jars but those are used to store frit for glass fusing.

I also have several of those old Atlas jars. Also some Presto, some Bi-centennial Ball/Kerr jars, old blue jars, a few "Mom's", some Mason branded jars. I have some old Ball pints that are short and square, I learned quickly not to give those away, I save them for my personal salsa usage, LOL.

The rest are kept in separate boxes and used only in emergency. Elery teases me that other people collect china or dolls or whatever, but I'm the only person he knows with a collection of old canning jars.

I have a few squatty pints, some tall straight (maybe 28 oz) ones with golden flowers printed on the side, old jelly jars with the metal lids, some Atlas, and more.
I never give gifts in these. I use them for dry or short term refrigerator storage and one of the jelly jars is my "salt pig" next to the stove. it has flowers printed on the lid.

It's always fun to find some at garage sales, flea markets, etc. Probably worth some money too! There's been someone on our local craigslist advertising ONE old clear bail type quart jar for $9.00.....for ONE jar!!! Must be a pretty darned special jar. Although, it's still there, so not moving too quickly...

I too have lots of the old Atlas and Mason jars and the blue/green ones. Last year, my neighbor who was my gardening-canning buddy passed away and he left me all of his jars. A mother load (15 dozen) of mostly Ball and Kerr jars. I don't use the Atlas or Mason for canning,either, in fact today, I was getting out some jars and found the box of them and considered getting rid of them.

Same with me...all of my old jars and canning books are proudly displayed. If I find them I'll buy them even if they are just for the display case.

If I am planning to give anything away I'll use standard jars and keep the favorites for myself.

Hello, I can quite a bit and my great uncle just gave me all his jars. Well, some of them look really old. I don't want to use them if they are valuable- I'd like to maybe put dry goods in them and not take a chance of breaking them. None of them are blue. Some of them say Atlas, One is tall- skinny- never seen one like that. Some of the Ball and Kerr's look old. In total he gave me about 12 boxes and about 20 of them look old. Any website or markings on how to find out how old they are?? Also, a friend gave me her mother's jars and two of them were the Mom's jar- I put them on a shelf- Loved those!! Never seen them before!! I loved reading the posted- glad I'm not alone about keeping jars!! Haha! I was the only one of my friends canning when I started and since them I gotten a bunch of them to start!! Kyla in Al
