No, they are not.

It's a question of size. Pressure cookers are smaller. As a result, they heat up, and cool down, faster than a pressure canner.

However, the heat up/cook down times are factored into the directions for any particular canning recipe. If you can in the pressure cooker the food will be underprocessed, and possibly unsafe.

The bottom line is, you can cook in a pressure canner, but canning in a pressure cooker is not recommended.

Presto uses links to Amazon for a lot of parts for Presto products on their site. Presto has a lot of informaiton about older models, and manuals too. I just purchased a ring and pressure valve for an old Presto canner, and it's perfect. You may need the serial number from the canner to look it up, but not always. Also, some times the number on the bottom of the canner is NOT the serial number, so check the sides of the canner as well as the bottom. They are different. Some bottom numbers were for inventory information for the company only, so check for the number in two places to make sure.

Hi Dave and seysonn, Thank you both so much for your help! Thank you to everyone who tried to help me . I happen to have an extra vent pipe since thought I would need one for my other canner but once I got it found out a new vent pipe had been installed. I found a wrench and took off the vent pipe before I read the suggestion about checking for bubbles. I placed the gasket from my other canner in it since it uses the same part and tested it. With the new vent tube I did not hear hissing after turning off the heat but did notice some bubbles when I placed some dish washing detergent around the vent pipe. I got a few bubbles around the safety valve but not much. I was squirting detergent everywhere LOL! Even tried around the rim and no bubbles. It's just strange if it was leaking in a major way why would it come up to pressure with the weight and maintain it? I'm pretty bummed :-(. Might go to Home Depot to get that Teflon tape. Right now might just place that PC on a shelf and not use it. I've tested it about 4 times and its still depressurize ng in about 12 mins.

I would dearly LOVE to find one of these in the tall ones that you can use so many jars in. I mean I would do me one more happy dance for sure! I have went to estate sales and auctions and thrift stores to no avail. Just praying on day before I get too old to can God blesses me with one! In the meantime I keep borrowing my friends that I am thankful will allow me to borrow hers. She never uses hers and so tempted to ask her what she would take for it. I had said up above someone had gifted me one but he found what he was looking at that day in all his stuff and it was some sort of a paint sprayer. He does say he has a pressure canner though but heaven knows when he will ever dig it out. lol He has enough stuff to furnish 5 houses. lol He's such a giver though so God really blesses him.

I've used a pressure cooker for over 35 years, and am so dependent on it that I always had one in my travel trailer as well as my own kitchen. My daughters both own one; one daughter uses hers as often as I do. Believe it or not, she requested one for a birthday present while she was still in college! The other one reluctantly took the one from her grandma's RV (after they sold their RV), and now really likes using it. Roasts -- chili -- spaghetti sauce -- sirloin tip steaks -- are just a few of the things I make in mine. It's used at least once a week. I currently have a Presto stainless steel whose handle has loosened too much to use, so I am using the Mirror aluminum model that used to be in my travel trailer. Donna

No, they are not the same. You cannot safely can in a pressure cooker. The current safe guidelines is that a canner needs to be able to hold at least 4 quart jars.

Not a problem, but as you may have found out, the search engine on this GW site is at best, very primative, so you can get all kinds of odd things coming up if the right (or wrong) words are entered as key words. Once you log in here and follow the threads daily like I do, you get to know who is here, who's gone, whats been discussed, and who's new.

I use "find in this page" to help me look through the threads when I do a search. In firefox it is under edit. I think it is the same in explorer, but I haven't used it in over a year so I'm not sure.

Also in Netscape, but 'find in page' needs to be closed and opened again, if pages are reloaded or changed.
