National Pressure Cooker Co. No. 7 Canner

Someone gave me a canner that looks to be really old. It is a National Pressure Cooker Co. No. 7.

I have no idea where to buy parts for this.

What appears to be the vent tube can unscrew in two places (the very top & at the bottom, which exposes a spring). It has holes in the body of it and a square hole on top that I'm assuming a counterweight goes on?

What appears to be a pressure valve doesn't have any rubber material that I see.

Is this something that I can buy parts for? Does anyone have a picture and/or owner's manual so I can see the original parts that came on it & compare?

Does anyone know about when it dates back to?

National Pressure Cooker is the company name (1917) for the Presto company. It became Presto in 1939.

So I'd guess it has to precede 1939 in manufacture. Any canner that old is always iffy, even assuming you could get parts for it. I have linked to one company that lists a sealing ring (have never done business with them so can't personally recommend).

You could contact the Presto company (www.gopresto.com) for their helpline number and see if they can tell you which parts are interchangeable with later models. A lot of Presto parts are usable with many canners.

You'll still have the issue once it's assembled of checking for warping or other deficiencies.

Hmmm I thought I gave you a link to parts supplies on another of your threads here about your 7B model? I linked another source below.

National is Presto, same company just a name change. The Model 7 was fairly common and was manufactured in the 1940's. The wood handled ones are older than the plastic handled ones.

Depending on its care and condition you'll want to replace several parts on it, especially the over-pressure safety valve and you will need to have the gauge tested or replaced. If I recall correctly it was a 16 quart model.

Just Google it by name and model and you can see all sorts of pics and there are several download sources online for the manual.

1. if you want one without a gauge then Mirro is your only practical choice. But just ignore the gauge and get the Presto 23 qt. and buy the extra 3 piece weight set. I can promise you will be happy with it. 2. & 3. yes, the "no need to replace the gasket" is the only advantage to the All American and IMO their cost is way out of line with the other manufacturers and they are substantially heavier so more to lift and tote. 4. again the Presto 23 qt. with the 3 weight set accessory is the solution to all of your questions. Honest! ;) Now, that said, please allow me some personal observations about some of the previous comments. While Ken could have been more tactful, it has been very stressful here lately and he is justifiably upset about that as are other regular participants. And more importantly, he is correct about many points. Some of us invest a great deal of time and effort here trying to help those who post pertinent questions and Ken is one of the best at helping. No offense to you valaree is intended, but some posters do abuse the forum, use it as a personal soapbox or their personal chat room, are constantly argumentative, want to make no effort to search all the valuable data here, want to be spoon fed info, and bury the discussions under lots of irrelevant info. We try to be friendly and helpful but some folks we just can't seem to help no matter how hard we try and that is discouraging. We all need to remember that we are allowed only a very limited amount of server storage room for our data and redundant posts, repetitive or off-topic posts, force more vital information, which is NOT old or outdated, to be deleted daily and lost for good. All of the basic topics of canning and home preservation have been discussed in great detail numerous times, true, and the info is still valid. But the search engine is boolean based - it responds to broad topics, not narrow specifics so it does take some practice to use it effectively. Melly, I'm remembering the conversation we had last season about that three-piece weight. I got mine nearly 30 years ago from Presto. At that time they specifically listed it in their canner manual as an accessory. It's intriguing that sometime later they quit recommending it, though as far as I know they've always offered the part, and now they're back saying it's OK again. Strangely enough, my All-American canner came with just that set-up, a gauge and a three-piece weight. They state specifically to go by the weight and that the gauge is just a visual reminder, nothing more. I've been fortunate. The Presto weight and the gauge have always been in sync, but if they weren't, like you I'd trust the weight since it's been machined for accuracy. I do like having the gauge, though. Carol

This is the bottom of the 18 qt, but it's the same. 8 inch raised section fits well on glass or coil round burner, not sure how it will be on your 6 inch (square). It will fit, but depending on how close the center of that burner is to the edge of the stove it will overhang just like your 14" stockpot does. I can't speak to whether you could set this centered between the burners which you said span 15" - it might not be stable and I don't know how 2 flames on the sides (lapping up the sides? Unless you can control just the left or right ring of each burner - I saw a camp stove like that, might have been at Northern Tool or Amazon) and cool spot in the middle would affect function, or whether it would warp. Be sure to ask the rep tomorrow.

That is interesting because last year I emailed that same company and was told the new vent pipe would not fit the old National 7. I ordered a new vent pipe anyway to see, and was sent the old, more fat one. They said that was the one that would fit. Well, it did, but it sure did not accept the weights. So I gave up on trying to fit the weights on it. The vent pipe threads on the old canner was totally different and larger in diameter. It was also shorter. I sold the parts I ordered since they were no different than the old ones that came on the canner. A dial can be accurate. If they could not be accurate, we would not be able to test them and tell people to use them. We cannot take that kind of risk for liability. I am not saying that I feel they are more reliable than weights, but the dials can still be used if tested and found to be accurate. We tell people they can be used as long as they are not more than 2 lb. off in either direction, either high or low. No, we cannot adjust or calibrate a bad dial gauge. I would contact the company on the link and ask them about the vent pipe and weights.

Yes you did give me a link for my Presto canner question. I didn't know that National Pressure Cooker Co. changed to Presto. This is an additional canner I have that someone gave me. It does have the wooden handles. It must be pretty old. I'll have to just see if any parts are available or if some of the available Presto parts will work on it.

interestingly, the national no 7 lid complete are interchangeable with the presto 21B.... parts seem to be available at several sites when searching for that. having said that, the gasket is the same but im trying to change over the no 7 to a rocker style vent and the plug looks different. but in a pinch, you could just exchange the whole lid if u could find one....

Presto uses links to Amazon for a lot of parts for Presto products on their site. Presto has a lot of informaiton about older models, and manuals too.
I just purchased a ring and pressure valve for an old Presto canner, and it's perfect. You may need the serial number from the canner to look it up, but not always. Also, some times the number on the bottom of the canner is NOT the serial number, so check the sides of the canner as well as the bottom. They are different. Some bottom numbers were for inventory information for the company only, so check for the number in two places to make sure.

Have you checked with the linked sources provided above in this thread? They are quite good sources for out-dated parts. If none of them carry it then the odds of finding one are very slim. The only other alternative, if you honestly want to trust it for use, would be experimentation with more current model gaskets to see if you can make one of them work. But that is a risky proposition.

I borrowed a friends All American and I can't wait to use it. I'll probably be hooked once I do. Man this thing is heavy! I love it because it's soooo tall I can stack my pint jars and do a bunch at one time in it. That's the part I love other than it being sooooo thick.

You can do the same thing with the larger Presto and Mirro canners too for lots less money. Plus the weight of the AA when filled with water and/or jars of food becomes a real issue for some folks and for some stoves. AA canners are nice but they aren't unique in what they can do so one has to decide if the extra cost is really justified.

just a follow up on national retort 20 quart canner and gasket. Used a presto 9907 that I cut up and glued back together with super glue after measuring . Fits perfectly and had it up to 15 psi for 1/2 hour no leakage problems. Everything works great. Looking forward to some canning. BTW has anyone done any PIP cooking? TIA. Steve
