Can I substitute fresh tomatoes for canned in a recipe?

This may seem like a really dumb question, but I hope someone will answer it for me anyway!

First, some background:

I make my own pizza sauce, using canned diced tomatoes. It is not cooked, but goes on raw and heats through with the rest of the pizza as it cooks. I usually make a double batch and freeze the extra for future use.

This year I have attempted growing tomatoes and have been somewhat successful, in that I think I have enough tomatoes to make a batch of pizza sauce.

Here's my question: can I substitute the fresh tomatoes for the canned in my recipe? My concern is that the canned tomatoes have been somewhat cooked in the canning process and the texture (or some other aspect I'm not aware of) of the fresh tomatoes will be different, thereby changing the sauce in some way.

Thanks in advance!

Michelle
