I use a Jack LaLanne juicer and it seems to get all the juice out of fruits and tomatoes. It has saved me a lot of time in many of my canning projects.

Villaware food strainer is a good choice, and be sure to use the berry screen. Extracts the juices a lot faster and more efficient than any other method.

Would a Jack LaLanne power juicer work on pitted fruits like chokecherries? I would think that the pits would wreck the motor? I also was worried about the same thing with a grinder type of juicer like the Villaware food strainer. Wouldn't the pits plug that up or cause problems there too? Has anyone used any of these things on berries with pits in them?

Ahh, thats what the shorter grape spiral does. It is short enough to allow the larger seeds to pass through the end without jamming. Without that optional grape spiral and berry screen, the VIllaware is limited to a few less foods.

I love the steam juicer ! Works so fast, no need to pit or anything. It removes all of the juice, the pulp is really dry in mine.
Out of 2 gallons of frozen plums, we got 1 1 /2 gallons juice. I think we could have gotten even a little more had I wanted to wait on it.

No, I wouldn't put anything with pits in mine. The booklet says you can put pineapple and cantaloupe through it without peeling but I wouldn't do that either.

Smaller seeds like you find in blackberries or tomatoes doesn't hurt. Nor does whole oranges/lemons.

How did you freeze your plums? Did you puree/pit first, or just freeze whole after washing?

Another juice question - we have a goodly supply of oranges, but freezing whole juice takes up lots of room, and it tends to separate easily when defrosted.

I wondered if one could allow the juice to separate (it does naturally), then ladle off the top watery part, and freeze what's left? Something like reconstituting frozen commercial juice, by adding back the water -

I know, why don't I just go ahead and try it.....but thought if someone out there already has, it could save me the trouble.

Bejay, the plums were cut in half and pitted, then frozen. My friend did them and gave them to me. There would be no problem using the steam juicer with the pits in them, though.
This is what I have on freezing orange juice:
Freezing orange juice: Although orange juice can be frozen, it takes up a lot of space and some varieties separate when frozen. Valencia oranges produce the best juice for freezing. After squeezing, fill clean freezer cartons or jars. Heavy gauge glass canning and freezer jars are best. Plastic jars tend to leave an "off flavor." Leave 1- inch headspace for expansion. Seal, label, date, and freeze at 0º for up to four months.

I am glad to hear that steam juicer works so well. How long did you have to steam the plums to get all of the juice out and leave the dry pulp? I read that chokecherries, which is what I am trying to juice, take about 60 minutes to juice in the instructions for the Mehu Liisa steam juicer. That didn't seem so bad. My old berry press takes me at least that long to press a gallon of them.

An hour is about right. That is pretty much how long it took for the plums, and they were still frozen, too.
I got a good blue enamel steam juicer at the Goodwill for $10.
