Deformed Rudbeckias???

Hey, look at what I found today...some of my rudbeckias on one plant are all WEIRDY lookin'! What's up with that?

Anyone know what caused those doubled looking blooms, with extra centers and petals, both?

I like their uniqueness. You know there is a coneflower called Razzmatazz like that.Maybe that is how it got started!

Yes that's it. They are so gorgeous. I have the exact same situation as susanzone5. I bought my 'Autumn Colors' plant in 2003 and it has since reseeded itself every year all over my garden. In fact I have too many now and I often trim them back. (I currently have 3 huge bouquets in my house and the garden is still packed with them!) However, the flowers now, compared to when I bought the plant, are very different. They are smaller and have less autumn coloring overall. Some flowerheads are now pure gold. They are still gorgeous but the first year's flowers were my favorite. The plants are so tall that last week's bad thunderstorm knocked 99% of them over. They're still alive and flourishing but they're now mostly horizontal with the flowerheads bent up toward the sky. I also have perennial 'black-eyed susan' which is Rudbeckia fulgida, with smooth foliage and small thin-petaled gold coneflowers, which are not yet blooming. They will be blooming later this month or next. That grows & spreads like crazy underground, as well as a few seeded new ones here and there. Those plants are nice and sturdy in mostly neat rounded mounds.

I don't know but it looks to have some kind of defect that is limiting and/or deforming the petals. Might it be in the rudbeckia/coneflower/sunflower/coreopsis family? The cone probably will help id the plant since it is more symetrical in design than the above mentioned. I've had weird problems with deformities to rudbeckia blossoms(newer variety) and dieback funguses on common blackeyed susans this year.

Can't really tell much of anything from the picture but most likely the problem is soil related. Too much soil moisture is as bad for plants as too little, both kep the plants from uptaking necessary soil nutrients and without nutrients plants do not grow well.

It is sometimes called 'bolting' which is caused by a virus. Remove all the affected stems and destroy them. Remove a weeds from around the area as this virus is transmitted from plant to plant by leaf hoppers who love weed flowers.

Funny,
the exact same thing happened to some of mine.
I started a batch from seed last October. They started blooming late this Spring, and some of the blooms came up just like that! Also no idea as to the cause... although strangely just as the plants really started to put out lots of flowers, they all died in a matter of days... some kind of infestation/disease, I'll never be sure, because they've long since been dug under. dang.

Ill, they aren't really very pretty, but they ARE cool, in a freaky sorta way.

Goldenpond, I wish they were as pretty as razzmatazz, but they just look sort of steroidal.

Cindee...dang! My Kryptonite secret is out!

Musicman, sorry you lost yours. They should just be coming into their own right about now. Some of mine bloomed early this year, too, but most are covered with flowers now, making their usual late summer-early fall splash of nonstop color. I dearly LOVE these, and they are NATIVE, too. And pretty drought tolerant. They do die back after blooming, but new ones happily volunteer to replace the old ones, so they continue to thrive.
