East Orlando Swap Slumber Party and Garden Tours

Thought I would start a new thread to capture this. Kate/ Solstice is having a swap on Saturday October 20. Always jealous of my neice's fun slumber parties with her fellow 7 year olds I thought a slumber party in conjunction with the swap would be in order, as I live near Kate but in a rural area. I have had some responses - pleae let me know if you want to stay on Friday or Saturday or both. Saturday will be slumber party central. I have a big house and entertain a lot so you will be comfortable!

Also I have some good gardening buddies here and will inquire about some gardening tours that Saturday afternoon or on the following Sunday if there is interest. Some are Master Gardeners and some are in the trade and at least one has unusual plants he sells at low cost to "feed his addiction".

Please let me know if you are interested, esp re the garden tours so I can make arrangements. I will coordinate as the time approaches with specifics.

Four you locals or those travelling here but with other accomodations - let me know if you just want the tours. I would like to give our potential hosts a heads up on how many of us to expect.

Of course! but if that is the effect maybe you two shold come inside and my husband and I should take the van! (hee-hee)

There is likely plenty of room inside too but whatever floats your boat!

Wow, JC, I want an Ursula....seed! Don't know if I have anything rare or weird you want, but..you can dig up what ever you want. I was just re-reading the posts to get a head count/names, somehow I spaced Fawnridge was the one bringing the pulled pork..soo.. he can't come..are burgers and hotdogs okay with everyone? DH will be on a Harley poker run thing, so burgers and dogs will be easy for me and feed the masses. If you are vegetarian, please bring your own Bocaburgers or soy dogs, if you don't like boigers or dogs, bring your favorite lunch. I have a large boat cooler for ice,it'll be full of bottled water. If anyone wants sodas or iced tea, please speak up about that too, and I'll add some to the cooler. As far as where everyone will put their plants....hmmm..I guess we'll play it by ear! I wasn't going to be able to go to this so it doesn't really concern me - and I am truly sorry to say that - but one thing caught my eye - "She was already worrying about not having her garden in good shape" - I'm exactly the same way and I wish I could remember how it is to visit someone else's place; I don't see the mulch that needs to be replenished, or the things that need to be moved or pruned or whatever when I visit! I'm the only one who sees that in my house and my garden, everyone else is impressed - and I think they're fools don't I?? :-) At someone else's home I know it's a work in progress and when I see something in someone else's garden that needs attention I don't feel so overwhelmed after all. What I will remember is their love and enthusiasm for their garden and new ideas I bring home with me for my garden. Ok, sorry to have gotten off track, I've been distractable all week... Suzanne

I found last spring directions, just in case.:) The address is 404 Macchi Ave, Oakland, FL 34787. The town is between Winter Garden and Clermont. If you are approaching from the Florida Turnpike (aka Ronald Reagan Turnpike), the exit is 272 for "Winter Garden." When you get off the highway you would go East towards Winter Garden. The first light East of the the exit is Tubbs St (aka 4th Street), you turn left at that intersection (you know it is the right one because there is a Chevron Gas Station). Then go to the first stop sign and make a right onto Oakland Ave. Then, a few blocks down go left on Winters Landing. Macchi Ave is the last street and you turn left again. The house is third from last on the street on the left. For those of you coming from Deland, your best bet is taking 1-4 West, then 414 West, then 429 South. The exit off 429 is Exit 23 toward Winter Garden. When you get off the exit, you are going right (West) on Colonial Rd (aka Highway 50). Drive for 3.7 miles and turn right at 545/Avalon Road (there is a 7 eleven there), then turn left at the stop light onto Oakland Ave. You will go down for .7 miles and turn right onto Winters Landing. From there, go to the end and that is Macchi Road. Then you make a left onto Macchi and the house is the 3rd to last on the left hand side. Silvia

anita, just got to speak up here. What a generous offer to open your home to other gardening lovers. Very nice! I wish like heck I could do the 4+ hour drive to make Kate's swap. But physically, that's just not possible. By chance would you be interested in making a drive to Fort Myers for my swap on Sept. 2nd? (it's on the exchange page) Love to meet you! Was talking to MsMarion today and we are just amazed at all the friends we have made on garden web and all the traveling we do to get to swaps. The generosity, information, support we get here is so astonishing!! Please know you are welcome to come join us!!

I would be interested in garden tours on Sunday as I have an obligation to be guest service runner at Give Kids the World from 5 - 9 Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Whatever can fit into those time periods would be enjoyed and appreciated. You are a most generous person to open your home, but then most gardeners are. I live in south west Orlando. Cindee: I will make an effort to come - will see if my favorite travelling buddies are up for a road trip. You all seem to have so much fun and I always like tropicals which I suspect you more Southern gardeners have more of! If you change your mind and feel up to the drive for the Orlando adventure please let me know!

Linda- will shoot for Sunday for most if not all tours.

I am going to have to get ingredients for S'mores I think....

when I coordinate the garden tours I will also ask the hosts to join us at Kate's (if that's ok with you Kate!) and also to dinner Saturday night at my house. Oh boy I cannot wait!

I've been planning to go to Kate's swap ever since she first invited us all, but I've been out of the loop a bit, not having much chance to play online lately. I haven't read all of the posts about it, and am trying to catch up now. Just to clarify, we ARE still having the actual swap at Kate's house, right? And we will be there for the bulk of the afternoon, lunch, etc, like last time? With all these extra activities being planned, I just want to be sure I've got that part right.

Thanks for the clarification! (Kate, you know I can't wait to see your garden and your precious pups again! Please let me know what I can bring for lunch & snacks, etc.)

I've been out of the loop myself for a couple weeks and was surprised to come back and find all this! Yes, the swap is still on, with food, shuttle launch viewing, deely boppers, etc. I'll leave the Sunday portion of the program to Anita; any chance that will include a visit to Biosphere?

Okay, got it! Thanks, Kate & Anita for all you are doing. It sounds like a lovely weekend, with lots of fun to be had both days (and for some folks, NIGHTS, too). I can't wait!!

I had not thought of Biosphere but that could be an option. There are 4 private homes that I have seen that are really tremendous and I was going to start with those. I am not sure the owners will agree (well I am 99% of two and the other two have done it in the past but not sure they want to do it again). So if they drop out maybe Biosphere is an alterntive.
