Cherry would be Black Cherry (hands down!) Early would be Kimberly (nothing personal) Green Zebra would be a priority, not only because of its beautiful colouring, but because of its productivity and its great, unique taste. Then a red or pink beefsteak/slicer - Neves Azorean Red, Red Brandywine, Large Pink Bulgarian - there's tons to choose from - you just have to research their qualities ( DTM, yield, flavour etc.) & pick what you think works for you. If you're planting 6 or 7 plants in that space - I would say one Black Cherry and one Green Zebra is never enough! Plus you could try more than one large pink/red.

It doesn't really matter except that some of them (the cherries) will be quite large plants so you don't want them shading the smaller plants. Plant the taller indeterminate varieties on the north side of the beds and the shorter determinate ones on the south side where they will still get good sun exposure. That is alot of big plants for 3 small beds so I assume you plan to do some extensive pruning on them? There is a variety whose name is "Black", just Black. Dave

I ended up with a cherry fort - not a maze. The signif other decided to downsize the whole deal... so I ended up with a 10 X 10 area. We were starting with lawn... So I planted a tomato every 6-8 inches. I know inches... I put in: Gajo De Melon Suncherry red star sungold green doctors zebra cherry black cherry snow white Riesentraube OSU Blue Oh heavens, I'll have to go home and check again... there were others... I got a lot of people who wanted to donate seed, so I took them up on them and added them to the 'fort'. I have to take recent pictures, but this is what it looked like early on. I haven't been gung-ho on documenting this because I didn't want to document a complete failure if it happened... :) Then I went back to the original farm (without my camera) this weekend and they have extended their tomato maze - lots more varieties and much bigger this year... I will bring the camera next time I go. Again they told the kids "come back with your basket and belly full." SO cute and SO gets them excited about gardening. I want that!!! I'll take pictures tonight and post them tonight or tomorrow.

(Ever find yourself wishing you could sometimes play things hour by hour? I often do, but it seems that often after making a commitment there is something teasing me to cancel.) gardengal48 -- I bet I could do that dill pickle operation on the firm green mongrels. I usually try to make filled green beans (dilly beans) every summer, but haven't gotten to it this year. I hot water bath the pickled beans. Is that how you to your green cherry tomatoes? Is the recipe pretty much like the dilly bean recipe -- green beans, garlic clove, dried red pepper, dill weed, white vinegar, I think picking salt? I may want a Bloody Mary after all my garden and kitchen work. ci-lantro -- I absolutely love Tex-Mex food. Double that if it's got cilantro in it. I make a lot of Southeast Asian food as well. There is a Thai sea food salad that is very similar to civiche. I often make quickie burritos and, yes, I can see how your roasted tomato-peppers-onion sauce would work nicely. Do you slow smoke-roast the veggies outdoors or roast them in a pan in the oven? I may try roasting in my wood-fire grill (Char-Griller -- lid closes so it can act like a smoker). I'll have to experiment with the bizillions of tiny unripened ground cherries. Last year I envisioned a sort of ground cherry - cranberry - chili salsa (with lime juice if refrigerator fresh) Thanks again. I'll try to follow up with photos. ETA -- see the small green and (ripened) yellow tomatoes? These were volunteers that ended up in a front perennial garden, and I just let them be. There is a bird table there and on it I place seeds from old seed packs and various seeds culled from kitchen prep -- squash, tomato, melon, older nuts and sunflower seeds. I suspect that over the years, some of the volunteers got together. Perhaps a yellow pair cross pollinated a sun gold or a plum tomato. Some of the older seeds (outdated seed packs) were viable, including some micro greens and mustards. The ground cherries are everywhere, but need more sun than they get in the bird tray area.
