cherry jam question

Ok, I've never made jam of any kind before but my inlaws have this cherry tree that's loaded with cherries this year. There are way too many to eat all fresh, plus they are a bit tart. I was hoping to make some sort of jam/preserves with the extra. I don't know the type of cherry but the cherries aren't dark red like the cherries you'd buy in the store - more like a yellow-orange-red mix and they are only about 1/2 inch in diameter. Any suggestions or recipes??
