Tabebuia, Orchid Tree and Yellow Poinciana From Seed??

I was at a park and found tons and tons of Tabebuia seeds. They are really neat looking by the way. Like little birds.

I was able to get yellow.

On the other side of the park was the pinkish and purplish Tab's. I saw light pink blooms on the ground and lavender colored blooms nearby as well. I got lots of seeds from this area too.

So, how do I start them and how long will germination take? The doves got my Red Royal Poinciana seeds. I hope they enjoyed them.

Oh, I got Yellow Poinciana seeds from the same park too.

I aso got some purple Orchid Tree seeds. : )

I had fun. They have lots of all the trees I listed in this park.

I also saw a tree that had light purple blooms, in cluster?? Any ideas? Kind of reminded me of the Potato Tree blooms. They are in bloom right now as I was hoping to get some seeds. lol

Anyone had any luck with any of the above?

I have had luck growing trees from seed, that's how I got my royal poincianna. I just use regular potting soil and barely cover them and keep watered, usually every other day. I'd love to have some yellow tab seeds myself.

I have a lot of orchid trees started from seed. Three already bloomed - about a year and a half to two years after they sprouted from seeds.
Orchid trees grow fast from seeds :)

Yes, Delonix regia-the "royal poinciana"-is a magnificent thing, perhaps the single most beautiful tree in the world, by some reckoning. It is my understanding that although S. Florida is to their liking, they are actually from a still more tropical region and one where even the light frosts that FL encounters probably never happen. As such, this tree can be deciduous in S. Florida. Sal, see anything amiss in what I'm saying here? For my part, I've found the Fabaceae to be a veritable treasure trove of amazing species. Just the popcorn cassia alone is almost too good to be true, this used as an "annual" up here in the north....one which simply never looks bad, and never quits blooming all summer long. But I digress. I think your tree is fine also. I'm not sure if I understood correctly though....are you still growing it in a pot? It would be far, far better in the ground. BTW, much horizontal space will be needed should one or more of your trees survive. They grow sideways at least as much as upward. +om

Here's a pic of a tree that I always thought was a Gumbo Limbo. Then it bloomed little white fragrant flowers. Now it is full of berries - they remind me of Chinaberry berries - Take a look: Here's a couple more Gumbo Limbos in the yard across the road on Chokoloskee: I strained to look, but no berries on these I just wanted to give ya a good shot of the trunk, since foliage is so deceptive. Anyways, I had some volunteer seedlings pop up and thought they sure looked like they would grow up to be trees. The mahagony trees had all their seed pods burst, so that's what I figured these would be. But now I'm wondering if they are Gumbo Limbo babies. Denise, did you visit E.C. and Chokoloskee while the Royals were all blooming? I did an experiment one day during a bike ride on the island, and no matter where I was - if I looked in any direction, I would see Royal Poiniciana blooms. Oh, by the way, the Coral Salvias that I grew from the seeds you sent me started blooming even as tiny infants...I love them and keep forgetting to write and thank you for your generosity! Okay, back to the Gumbo Limbo thing about growing them from cuttings - after Andrew, apparently a big landmark Gumbo was ripped apart and people took its limbs and stuck them into the ground, for posterity. When we bought our trailer in '96, there were 4 nice niced Gumbos from this famous tree surrounding our porch. But boy, were they interesting with their odd-shaped and contorted trunks! I was so proud to have them in the yard. I thought that was the only way they were grown, from cuttings; as I'd never seen any seeds. Then in '05, they endured the winds and rising flood waters from Wilma. When I was told we had winds up to 175 mhp, I didn't believe it because the Gumbos were still standing. Ours had been drastically pruned before we evacuated because they were so close to the house; but others on the island were still standing (like these in my pics) and I don't know of any that actually fell. I'll have to investigate this phenomenon further and see how many cutting-trees from the famous Andrew tree were able to endure Wilma winds. Funny you should ask, I found some orchid tree seeds the other day on the sidewalk.... I was attempting to root some cuttings from floral foam and on a lark I poked the orchid seeds in there, and they sprouted!

Hey Froggy, I learned with Tab seeds by trial and error. They have a dip in the center of the seed top. Plant this UP and barely cover with soil. Keep the seeds relatively moist in a warm shaded place. Once you get sprouts, add some more soil to the top, but do not completely cover the plant. I had mine growing in pots, graduating up each time it got a bit bigger. Kept it fertilized, but don't over do. Time release is good. Mine were in pots for 2 years before I stuck in the ground. Here it is almost 4 yrs later.

I have a bunch of royal poinciana seeds if anyone is interested. They sprout with no trouble and they grow FAST.
I also have some yellow tab and jacaranda seeds. Anyone for trades?

Nikkers, I have some yellow dwarf poincianna seeds for some yellow tab. How's that sound? ;) I only use bubble mailers for seeds though, and ask that you do the same.

I haven't planted nay yet. Was getting some containers together form take-out food and stuff form grocery store that veggies come in etc.

Do the Tababuia's sprout pretty quickly?

Cliff, I just threw mine in with a pots with a lil soil. They seemed to propagate rather quickly as I remember. I sent you an email.

I have grown tabebuia from seed. I have several 2 feet tall I need to plant. I didnt do anything special but plant them in pots, but some of the seedlings died from mildew it appeared.
I will spray seedlings with fungicide next time.
I have grown royal poinciana into trees.
I filed them and soaked in warm water a few days & then planted them in pots.
We had some tractor work and the dumb man killed my poincianas though.
I want more.

Hey Cliff,

I soaked mine in a small glass of water and in about a week I saw tiny roots forming. I then placed the individual seeds in soil and they all made it up.

I am sure there are all different ways to do it, I dont know which is most foolproof and best yet I got em to go.

I don't have any silk floss seeds yet - still haven't seen my tree bloom - but I will have lots of Tipuanu Tipu seeds in a few weeks. Send me an email if you are interested.
