Flamboyant Tree (Royal Poinciana)?????
Comments (2)Let it be. Unless a twig turns to smelly, rotting mush, do not prune to remove it. You may still have further bouts with frosts and cold, so any pruning could lead to re-leafing and further harm. Prune it in late March (after no further danger of frost) when you see a strong regrowth of foliage and it becomes very apparent where the dead twigs are. On a side note, are you SURE it's a royal poinciana (Delonix regia)? They are more of a zone 10 plant. Do you possibly have a dwarf poinciana (Caesalpinia pulcherrima), that makes much more sense for coastal SE Texas?...See MoreRoyal Poinciana tree
Comments (9)Hi Gorgeous tree but not so much if they eat the plumbing ??lol have you checked Floridata or UF sites?? They do get enormous but seem to snap rather than be pushed over during windstorms . Theere is a sterile variety that doesn't produce the seedpods. I tried to dwarf a white variety for over 15 years Planted it in the neighbors yard 3 years ago .Stll has not flowered so no idea if it's really white lol If you have the room I'd say go for it but would keep it at least 25/30 feet from the septic. There are many types of dwarf poincianna that stay a manageable size. good luck gary...See MoreRoyal Poinciana tree - anyone have one?
Comments (45)Jane It originally was a "bonsai" experiment . Went through a stage of dwarfing a whole bunch of trees lol I was able to keep it under two feet for many years The sphag allows root pruning at any time and the use of a very small container . After the hurricane wrecked a bunch of them I went back to regular culture except for DP a powderpuff tree and several ficus Decided to allow the DP to get much larger so it's planted in a pot within a pot surrounded with aroids next to the garden pool . Still want to maintain it under 6 feet ,the reason I kept the method, and the ficus MUST be kept under control lol Certainly not necessary to grow DP they do fine in florida sand . i just like to grow about 6 times more plants than I have the space for and the dwarfing method helps a LOT!! gary...See MoreRoyal poinciana tree dying any help please
