Not sure if this is helpful, but I have 2 Valiant vines and I don't do anything to them, just let them ramble up a 3-wire support, then they continue up onto the fence and into the nearby trees. In the spring I prune out dead wood and canes growing where I don't want them to, and shorten things up a bit. They are so vigorous that about twice a year I go after them with hedge shears so I can maintin access to that part of the garden. Maybe you can do the same for your arbor, just pruning with shears when things get unwieldy and you need to shape the vine? Don't cut to the ground, you need some of that old wood to provide the new fruiting growth. Thanks everyone for your help. Buford, your Iceberg looks so graceful on the wall. I can only hope that mine will look 1/2 as good. I'm still a little unclear as to how the climbers get shaped..it looks like you might be trimming back the canes so as not to grow over the window? Or do you just let them grow at will? And what kind of wire are you using...it must have to be very strong...I have searched and searched the web and several rose books for specific answers on training climbing roses against fences and walls. I'm amazed at how little information I can find.

Hi bbiscool2, This is not a lived plant. It is a collection of dragon fruit vines (vines which have fruits).

Chris, this is my third year with Bluebirds and will be my third year training them. We never seem to get the same pair back for some reason. Bluebirds are drop feeders meaning they perch somewhere and watch below them for bugs and then drop down on them. You need to watch where you Blues normally perch for bugs. Put a dish of live wiggly worms underneath that perch. Hopefully they will perch there and see the worms, once they find that there are worms in that dish you can slowly move it little by little to wherever you want it. Today is day 2 of trying to train our new blues who now have four eggs and are incubating. They are further away from the house than previous years but hopefully we can get them to find the mealworms. Right now I am putting them under a tree near the nestbox that I see them perching on. So far no takers though, at least the Robins haven't found them either though as unfortuantely they will be trained right along with the Blues. Hopefully ours find them soon as I don't want to leave worms so near the nestbox for very long. Good luck to you! Donna
