Welcome to the Forum Mick. I'm not a palm expert (I'm sure Ricky will be along shortly to offer some good advice) but I think as long as there is some green showing on your palm there's hope for it. I would cut off the fronds and frond ends that are brown, give it a little palm fertilizer, water it well and watch for signs of new fronds.

Hi Mick, that's a shame what happened to your screw pine, but as Solstice98 said, since there is some green I bet it will come back. Depending where in Tampa you are (and which zone map you choose), you're either in zone 9a, 9b, or maybe even 10. From the looks of your freeze damage, I'd guess 9a.

John is right - I was thinking 9a also. I noticed the "7?" in your posting information and meant to tell you that you are WAY south of zone 7. It's important to pin down your zone to help you make wise choices but don't let it completely rule your plant shopping. Many of us often push the zones one way or the other a little - warmer is usually more successful than cooler since it's hard to simulate enough freezing hours to satisfy a zone 7 or 8 plant. You'll also find some areas of your yard that may be more akin to a more southerly zone - a south facing wall that reflects sunlight and protects plants from the wind, for example, may set up a microclimate zone closer to a 10 than a 9.

I have a screw pine in my yard, and it has a little die back, but not as bad as yours, but I think the fact its under an oak's canopy and near the north fence protects it from the killer freeze.

You indeed have a pandanus (screw pine), but it looks like yours doesn't have the shark teeth along the edge of the blades like mine (or my eyes are failing me).

I'll have to defer to others who know what they are talking about, but I suspect that if you leave it alone it will recover as long as the central part is still alive and giving off new leaves. It will also on occasion grow new branches so if the top is truly hammered it might give off new branches to the side. It's going to be a little ugly for a while though. Mine is a very slow grower.

This one does have the red teeth that borders the leaves.

So I guess you're telling me not to cut the dead leaves back to where they are green?

I should just let nature take it's course? Is that it?

As long as you see green , a plant is producing nutrients .
This is particularly important with palms since they grow slowly .
Do not cut anything on a palm unless the frond is 100% brown .
Leave the plant alone and over time - several years - it may recover .

This article from UF states zone 10 - 11 is best suited for the Screw Pine with slow growth rate . The kiss of death for palms is high nitrogen lawn fertilizer . Using just a bag of epsom salt is not enough . Look for specific palm fertilizer that contains all the trace nutrients required .
