Very few avocados on my tree this year. What could be the cause?

The avocados are still very tiny -- about an inch (or less) in length. But there are very few of them on the tree. Also, another thing I noticed several weeks back is that the trees's flowers weren't in bloom for long. What could be the cause of this? Last year, the tree was loaded with avocados.

Does it have to do with environmental conditions??? I vaguely remember someone once telling me that there's a correlation between the yield of fruit trees and hurricane activity. I think it goes something like: when the yield is low, there will be a lot of hurricane activity in that year.
