Ocala (Marion County) 3/8-9/08 Plant Sale?

Anyone going to the Marion County Master Gardeners' Plant Sale this weekend? I would be interested to hear from someone who has gone in the past: are there a lot of plants? good prices? flats of annuals? butterfly and/or hummer plants? FL native plants? If I go, should I bring a wagon to haul plants in?

Its the first time I have ever heard of it. Unfortunately we can't go, we have birthday plans with my 13 year old

I have been to it the last 4 years. Have always found things that I liked and bought. And I will be there again this year on Sat. bright and early. Hope the friends I have invited to go with me do go. But if not I will be there by myself.

Kathy's mention of moving to south or central Florida from a northern state is not the same as moving to a nearby county where your growing conditions won't be much if any different. But it does remind me, about fortuniana rootstock, Kathy, you might consider looking for vendors (or even fellow-rosarians in Florida) who do custom rooting. I understand Jim Mills in Buckatuna, MS will custom root roses. You can buy a rose (at least off-patent ones) and provide budwood to the person grafting, then you can get the variety you want on that rootstock. Probably somewhat pricey, but for old favorates that are otherwise hard to find, it could be worth it. I have a couple roses that are no longer commercially available as far as I know. So I would hate to just leave them behind. It is certainly some trouble moving roses, but when you consider the expense of replacing them, it may very well be worth it. Fortuniana is reportedly more challenging to graft onto than some other rootstocks. I've never even tried it. I tried to bud onto several Dr. Hueys many years ago, mostly out of curiosity. None of mine were successful, so I haven't even felt tempted to try fortuniana. Besides, after I moved from Mobile to New Orleans, I have since then grown roses exclusively in pots. Its easier for me living in a neighborhood with tremendously invasive tree roots. Plus, I'm limited to space for a maxiumum of about 40 roses, so I like to swap a few out each year as well as rearrange what I have from time to time. Keeps the garden interesting, and it is worlds easier with potted roses. I'm talking about 16-18 inch diameter pots for minis and 20-24in for the hybrid teas. Anyway, for potted roses, ownroot is just easier and seems to adapt to the confined space the best. Mike

I could have said almost exactly the same thing! We arrived early - about 8:30 - and waited for the gates to open because my friend isn't a member of the Gardens. It was her first sale too and she was as delighted with it as I was. We had to make a trip to the car to unload the first cartfull after just 30 minutes but then were more conservative the rest of the morning. The vendors were plentiful, the gardens were beautiful and the weather was perfect! And I even ran into a few GardenWebbers. I got back home in the early afternoon with enough time to plant most of what I purchased and spread 20 bags of mulch. What a great day! Kate

Bringing up an old topic: does anybody know if Steve and Carolyn Bertrand still are active with Perennial Farm near Ionia? In its glory years, that was quite a place for plant freaks. But we were there a couple of years ago, and at that time there were just a few interesting plants in the greenhouse, and Steve had been having some serious health problems and apparently was mainly just wholesaling seed from their garden. This spring I left a voicemail asking if they were still open and never heard back. Guess more than anything I'm worried about them (him). I have always had a soft spot for characters...

I wonder if they were actually "overheated"... It makes sense that they did not have enough time to recover from transplant shock though, as they were planted too late in the season. Trees that size will be tough to protect, and they better be planning to cover/tie the fronds this time, not just the trunks. They need to do at least what the Iowa palms guy does/did to winter his larger palm(s). If he can get washingtonias through an Iowa winter, the trachys should be doable. Big job though! Admission: $1.00 Kids 12 & under free. No Pets Allowed.
There will be a number of Master Gardeners on-hand throughout the event as well as Educational Booths and Seminars on a variety of gardening topics.

Small Trees for the Landscape

Trees add value to property, but most residential home sites are too small to accommodate large oaks. This workshop will present alternatives to large trees that will provide some shade, yet within the scale of suburban communities. David Holmes has 20 years with UF/IFAS Extension, the last 11 in Marion County.

A wagon would be helpful if not volunteers will be there to help with wagons. I've been there many times before for the Spring festival. I plan to be there.
