WHat To Do When A Plant You Buy Is Mislabeled?
Comments (11)Update: Thanks for all the feedback. I got in touch with the garden center and it seems (which makes sense) that I'm not the only one who got mislabeled echinaceas from them. Meanwhile, the other 1 gallon 'Pink Poodle' I purchased bloomed and it was also wrong - it looks like the not yet released 'Hot Lava' so I'm not sure what it was supposed to be. In any event, the garden center told me to dig the Tomato Soup because a woman who bought a Tomato Soup got a Pink Poodle and I could keep the other orange/reddish one free of charge. For those interested, these Echinaceas were all shipped from Novalis (Plants that Work) and the garden center said they ship with the labels, so there may be a larger issue here that is affecting many Novalis retailers. It's also possible that the tags fell off during shipping and were hastily and incorrectly placed at the garden center, which would make it just a local issue....See Moreplace to buy largest/most mature plants?
Comments (6)Hi Aimee, I just tried unsuccessfully to locate my most recent Vintage Gardens email. I might be remembering it incorrectly, but I think Vintage has some larger (3-gallon? 2 gallon? ...I forget!) roses that they are selling for $35. Some are rare, one-of-a-kind varieties. I don't remember for sure the size on the Climbing Grüss An Aachen, but I kind of think it is a larger size, not a band. I certainly would love to have that one! I don't think anyone else sells it, and Vintage may not have it again for a long time. We just tossed one more rose due to Rose Rosette Disease here, so I don't think we are close to being ready to put in another rose order, but Vintage does tempt me with some of their varieties. The plants in the one order we've gotten from Vintage came in very, very healthy, even after a trip all the way across the country. Best wishes, Mary...See MoreBuy, buy, buy: What makes you spend on plants?
Comments (31)Hmmm...winter makes me buy plants. To many catalog's and faulty memory for all the work I swore I would curtail next year. Long drawn out mucky/icky springs inspire me also to chase the winter blues away, garden therapy you know. Watching the sizzling summer heat weather reports seems to make me forget all about my cool maritime climate especially when I dream of gardens past...buzzing bees drunken swaying in the hollyhocks, the whine of mosquito s and the scent of bug spray. Autum rolls around, hints of yellowing leaves, shorter days makes me think of purchasing "just a few more bulbs" before winter settles in again. Then there are the memory plants, the ones I grow or purchase because they remind me of people I love or those that have passed...and pass along plants-must not forget those! Old fashioned flowers, the kinds that children delight in picking a big bunch of for their mama's before they head out for home, plants that smell good or have some outstanding feature that carry them beyond the blooming season. I grow plants that self-seed, the ones that knit the garden togather like a quiet friend you always know will help you through the rough patches though you may not see them often. The reasons are as varied and many as the hours I have spent in my gardens....See MoreOver 30 Windmill, & some Needle Plams planted by hotel in Iowa
Comments (78)I wonder if they were actually "overheated"... It makes sense that they did not have enough time to recover from transplant shock though, as they were planted too late in the season. Trees that size will be tough to protect, and they better be planning to cover/tie the fronds this time, not just the trunks. They need to do at least what the Iowa palms guy does/did to winter his larger palm(s). If he can get washingtonias through an Iowa winter, the trachys should be doable. Big job though! By the way, thanks for posting the follow-up dln949!...See Morechezging
