A Thursday to remember

What a nice afternoon I had, visiting with GW friends! An imformal meeting at Treefrogs, to chop Heliconias and pick up Siam Rubies, turned into a tasty dinner, fruit tastings, dirt shoveling, a wonderful garden tour, and a walk down the street to a city homesite filled with HUGE fruit trees! I felt transported into another world!!! So cool, so lovely, and such majestic trees!!! I'm used to my small, young trees, and too much open space. This yard was like a park.

I'm still stunned at the Black Sapote tree, and the grapefruit-sized fruits. We saw 25+ year old Lychees, soaring Mangos, a gigantic, lush Sapodilla with both round and oval shaped fruits. A Jaboticaba that despite being badly beaten by hurricanes, gave us ripe fruit today.

Poor Treefrog, he got the job of cutting down Sapote fruits that rained on him like cannonballs! We sampled Black Sapote cake (YUM!), and David showed us how to prepare the pulp. We ate Breadfruit nuts, a delicious dessert that Veronica made, scrumptious Hummus (David made) and ripe tomatoes so good that they vanished from the bowls immediately!

Kat brought perfect Papayas, dappled with sugar spots. Veronica's son Jerry, was a pleasure, and he brough his stuffed treefrog with him to honor our host. Thanks Veronica for the pepper plants and the Coconut oil!

Treefrog (David's) gardens are lovely. He has a gazzilion interesting edibles mixed with flowers/foliage plants in such an appealing way. I am sick with envy!!

His Siam Rubies are 5 times as large as mine.

I took photos, will post them tomorrow.

We gabbed so much we ran out of time to chop the Heliconias. Oh, well, a great excuse for another get-together(G).

Thank you Katkin for the Cannas and pep talk on pruning. Thanks D'Ann for the Bat plant and Orchid offers. Your company is always a treat. Man, we can talk, can't we?(G).

Lost track of time, hubby was so worried about me. He forgot that my night vision is now perfect(G). He called, but we were all outside, away from phones.

Oh, phooey, I forgot about the eggs. I brought them, they are in the refigerator. Enjoy them David!!!

Did anyone save me a piece of cake? LOL #$%$DH's knee...I so wanted to come. They drained 125cc of fluid this time and he's feeling much better. I missed all the fun and the talking and eating and wandering around TF's piece of paradise (I love his garden can't ya tell?) and the plants and the Black Sapote. Shucks!! Can't wait for the pictures.

We missed you. Glad you called. And I'm sure glad Dick feels better!
There are even a couple pieces of cake left. But not for long.
We did have a lot of fun.
And great food.
Veronika brought a delicious Czech treat, Lisa of course outshined us all with two delicious salads. A beautiful broccoli slaw and a wonderful potato salad! Not to mention a bucket of KFC! And a whole branch of delicious bananas.
We ordered pizza too!
Nice wine and hummus and pita, brownies, and more.
Just hanging out was the best.

Somebody please bring Marion a Black Sapote.

Love these impromptu get togethers!

Patty, On this forum, one of the earliest signs of spring is me planting tomatoes too early every year. : ) It keeps me entertained. Warming up the ground with black plastic won't hurt and might help. The air temperature is important too, though, so don't talk yourself into planting too early if you don't have good day-time temperatures. With this early warm spell, it is easy to think we'll stay warm, but an early Feb. warm spell is often followed by very cold weather in late March and early April, so be cautious. Milk jugs are too small to work for more than a month or so, depending on how quickly your soil and air temps. warm up, so keep in mind that the plant could quickly outgrow the milk jugs and have a back-up plan if cold weather returns after your plants are outgrowing their milk jugs. As long as you have back-up plants, you can take more risks--that's one reason to raise your own from seed--you feel a little more free to push the limits knowing that you have back-up plants. I'd do the three trials--it is the only way to figure out what will work best for you. I raise a perfectly wonderful, and fairly early, crop in the ground but I STILL raise tomatoes and peppers in containers too....always pushing to get them a bit earlier, always pushing to try more varieties and extend the harvest--both earlier and later. Containers give me the flexibility to do some of those things and they should do the same for you. Dawn

What's Up Down South really catches my eye. Bob likes them tall but most of his tall ones are yellow. Having one in orange red color range would be nice. Trahlyta is really an amazing color. The base color is so gray. I love the name Back to the Fuchsia--a nice play on words. One of my son's favorite movies was Back to the Future. One of these days.................!! I'm gonna get down there, too, and see Tree's wonderful garden for myself! Thanks for the great report, Lisa. Sounds like you all had a lovely day, all right! Good for you! I've never even HEARD of half the things you mention, let alone eaten any of them. I don't even know what I'm missing!

I had a great time! Everyone was so happy to see each other again. Marion so sorry you had to miss it, but we all were asking about Dick. Sorry I didn't know he was ill again. This was the first time I had sapote, and it was very good. It's like chocolate pudding, really! Of course a little plant trading when on and a lot of fun. :o)

David, can't thank you enough!!

MsMarion, so glad Dick is feeling better! We missed you!

I'll bring a bag of Black Sapotes to work today for you. Stop by when you can. They should be okay for quite a few days-are still firm. They are "ripe" when they feel like a mashmallow.

I just noticed the eggs this morning.
Mmmmm, good. Egg salad anyone? Quiche?
And the remains of a tub of broccoli slaw (I saw last night and shared with Sharon). An extra bottle of wine, lots of brownies and dessert too!
And I didn't even get one sapote for me! Oh, well I made out like a bandit!
And Veronika, your cute pot carrier is here also. I'll have to fill it with some plants to return to you. I'll look around for some hib. acetosella seedlings.
