Leu Gardens Annual Plant Sale is this coming weekend, Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30, 2008

Admission is FREE both days

Bring a wagon or plant cart for your purchases

I will be working at the Leu Gardens booth so stop in and say hello. We will be selling many species of palms, cycads, pandans, aroids, perennials, flowering shrubs, citrus, ornamental grasses, flowering trees, gingers, heliconias, bananas, a few unusual Cordyline species and Metasequoia at the Leu Gardens booth.

Me too! Me too! I have loved that mussaenda since I first saw it blooming at Leu. Eric, put my name on one: I'll be there at 8am!

(Katkin, if you are interested in MUSSAENDA PHILLIPINENSIS, Gardinos has them and is bringing one for me. Contact Andrea there is you want one! It's the one with white bracts and yellow flowers, very similar to frondosa with the orange flowers.)

Only real pic I got was of the yellow tree that my wife and I love in Leu Gardens. (which it won't seem to let me post right now for some reason) I was mostly interested in tropical fruit and some butterfly/hummingbird flowers. I came home with a Starfruit tree for $15 and a Sweet Almond bush for $10. My wife got a small gardenia for $8 and a blue flowering bush I've forgotten the name of. I was absolutely amazed that Hopkins Nursery was selling 3 gallon peach trees for $10 and loquats for $5, but unfortunately I have those already or I would have snagged some in a heartbeat. I was very tempted by some honeysuckle that smelled amazing, but I'm worried about how invasive it is, so need to do more research first.

I used to go regularly before my business and the nursery claimed all my weekend hours :-)) This really is a superior sale, offering a wide range of plants, some of which are pretty uncommon and desirable to collectors. But don't necessarily go looking for bargains - these are the same growers and vendors that sell to area retail nurseries and prices will be commensurate, although you may find some good deals on overstocks.

It was a beautiful day at the Leu! I saw so many great plants that it was hard to pick....:) I got a mix and match of miniatures, big ones too and a pretty birdbath. Thank you Eric for your great advice on the vine, we really like it and had no idea till you told us. After the cart was full, we walked through the tropical gardens to find the rainbow eucalyptus, it is huge! lol Silvia

Thanks Kate, but I already have that one. It's the orange flowered one I am looking for. :o) Aren't Syd & Andrea wonderful. I have been dealing with them for several years now.

No M. frondosa. I tried cuttings in summer 2x with no luck. And the big plant died, I think it had nematodes. Mussaenda are sensitive and we have lots in our sandy soil. They are in the Rubiaceae family, same as Gardenia. Many members of this family are prone to nematodes. Now I'm looking for another!
That M. philippinensis is actually M. flava which has now been renamed Pseudomussaenda flava. It grows well here and seems more resistant to nematodes and it flowers almost all year. It is also a little less sensitive to cold.

That's all good news about [pseudo]M. flava (nee philippiensis). Anything resistant to nematodes is on my good list.

Eager to see what else you have, Eric. The tiger grass I purchased from you 2 years ago it huge and beautiful. Everyone who comes to my yard comments on it and when the setting sun lights up the seed heads it just glows. Awesome plant!

Do you know where I might be able to get the M. frondosa? I am in the beginning of zone 10 with much improved soil so I would be willing take a chance with it.:o)

I had a wonderful time and got a few nice plants. I got a yellow nuns orchid and a dwarf bottle brush plant to replace the one I killed. ;o(

I picked up 3 really nice cane (angel wing) begonias with vivid leaf markings, my Mussaenda flava, daylilies from Beachlily, a couple of beautiful broms from the bromeliad society (glad I passed up the extremely expensive ones from the other vendor!), a 'husker red' penstemon, a blue-eyed grass, a pretty tile trivet for my neighbor who was having a dinner party Sat night, a tall red salvia, and a ratcheting clipper. I may be missing something but that's about it. I filled up my little red cart. The prizes were the muss, the angel wings and the broms. The rest was just frosting on the cake. I had a great time, as always.

I tried to get into the Leu sales area to say 'howdy' to Eric but he was the Belle of the Ball and you couldn't get near him! LOL!

Hi Kate! So great to see you and other members of this forum. As usual, I was very, very busy when you came by. Sorry!

I did get loose for a bit in the afternoon. Found a couple of lovely miniature roses, a beautiful peachy/rose hibiscus tree, a lovely brom, three plumeria sticks and a couple of really strange plants from Thailand in plug form. If they live they will be a great, odd houseplant.

Very successful sale and even more successful shopping! Had a wonderful time.

My daughter had a commitment in the morning so we didn't get over there until about 2:00pm. It was great fun though. We got cosmos (if anybody can tell me more about this one, I'll appreciate it), verbena and some orange purslane to compliment the yellow that I have.

I kept thinking, "any of these people could be garden-webbers" because I didn't see any of the ones I know by sight.

We had a great time with Evelyn & Hubby and I got carried away too, but I knew I would. Now comes Heathcote on 4/19. Sorry I missed Kate, but I did see Bodiggly. :o) And spent a minute talking to Beachlily. After ward I got to tour Tony's lovely garden. Wonderful day!
