Anyone trim a ligustrum tree like a crepe myrtle?

We have a waay overgrown ligustrum tree that is covering a large amount of the front of our house. It's about 20 years old.

We had a guy come out to do some trimming and we told him we wanted the ligustrum "severely" trimmed.

He suggested that it be trimmed like a crepe myrtle--cutting it about eight feet high where there would be no green, just wood--sort of how a crepe myrtle may look now.

He said although the tree could die, he has not had any do this and has done many this way. He said in about two months it will look really good.

It sounds good to me; has anyone done that?
