This is what I woke up to this morning

The unmistakable barking of mating otters...got a new camera with 18x zoom, now I can't even hold it steady enough to get focused pictures :-( Sorry!

And this IS a garden forum so I guess I'd better post a few flower pictures ;-)

Morning glories looking a little ratty after the winter but they have continued to bloom all year.

Thank you for your detailed answer, Sierra. Yes, I would love to see pics of your garden, as I'm sure the others would. You can post them in our gallery side, so as not to overburden the discussions side of the forum for those of us who don't have broadband access to the Internet. As for what grows in a zone 10, well, it depends on the zone 10 - Florida and Portugal, though technically both in zone 10 have different growing conditions, with Florida being mostly tropical (warm and humid, especially in the Summer months) and us being hot dry Mediterranean (even though I can also grow many tropicals here). For a sample of what grows well for me, have a look in the gallery for a thread called "Will you walk into my parlour?" which features my garden this month. If you follow the photobucket link on my album up to the root you can then find my other garden albums, showing the garden in just about every season of the year. That should give you an idea about what I can grow. My garden revolves basically around roses for Spring interest and then Fall and Winter interest. Summer is the tricky bit here, due to the drought and heat. As for roses, I'm mostly interested in antique roses, even though I also grow a few modern ones. My personal favorites that do exceedingly well in my climate are the old teas (NOT hybrid teas) and chinas. It's hard to tell how much snow we got because of the blowing but there are some really impressive drifts out there. There's one on our road taller than hubby and he's 6'2". The plow just went by and stopped in the road and turned around....I guess he's even intimidated by it! LOL Now it's raining and we're supposed to get more snow. Should be interesting. We just came in from playing outside and I'm in emailing snow photos to grandma. Here's one of the drifts in our yard.

Just wanted to update on the snowstorm tonight just in case our power goes out & I can't post tomorrow. The storm has already dumped close to a foot in my yard and it's coming down fast & furious at 11:30 p.m. It's supposed to go all night and til around noontime tomorrow. I've been watching the weather channel and it's crazy how much snow is coming out of the storm for such a widespread area. The wind is getting pretty strong up here and when I put on the spotlight the trees are bowing down with the weight of the snow. They are saying at higher elevations there will be the most amounts so I expect when I wake up in the morning I will be in for a shock. I notice that the Weather Channel focuses mostly on the metropolitan areas in their coverage. Those of us in tiny rural towns are getting huge amounts of snow. I see there are already some deaths related to the storm and I hope there will be no more. Jean, my husband works weekends so he will be at work tomorrow whether he wants to or not. He owns the local hardware store and also fixes power equipment so he was swamped by folks desperate to get their snowblowers fixed in time. Snow shovels were selling off the shelves...LOL. My son works the overnight shift at our local police department and when I talked to him a little while ago he said there are cars off the road everywhere. People just weren't expecting snow in October so they don't have their snowtires on yet. Everyone in the path of this NorEaster, please be careful! Celeste

Yes, kinco, when I got it in May I kept it inside until mid-June but it lives outside now. It's hanging close to the trunk of a tree so that it only gets dappled sunshine. I also have a carnosa KP and a calycina hanging there too. I hope the calycina blooms this summer too but it seems like a younger plant so I'll just give it some TLC and see what happens. It has an odd and faint smell during the day, I guess I'll check it out after dark. Thanks for the heads-up, Martha.

Nice pictures Tom! I love wildlife photos and pretty flowers too. This morning while walking on the trail, I saw a very big turtle and some palmettos, and I remember what you said about being in the country.

My otter's name is Totch and he has an evil heart. He once stole a 22" black grouper from my fish box. I once came to work for a tarpon trip and found Totch sleeping in my bait bag. He couldn't even eat all the pinfish but he ate most of them. He was sleeping off his buffet orgy, still in the bait bag.

He's too cute to kill but he certainly raises my blood pressure from time to time. Not sure what political party he comes from but he sure likes to take what others have worked for and enjoy for himself.

Thanks everyone, it was quite a treat, and they DO bark, if you've ever heard it you'll never forget that sound....

Do they ever get into any of your plantings?

They used to nest under my deck when I had the lattice surrounding the deck, but I took it off because I got tired of them dragging fish up under the deck and stinking things up :-) :-(

He's too cute to kill but he certainly raises my blood pressure from time to time. Not sure what political party he comes from but he sure likes to take what others have worked for and enjoy for himself.

No comment, NOT going to give away my political affiliation on a garden forum ;-)

Weird day, a first for me here in the burbs, never had this happen that I'm aware of during the day. I thought he/she climbed up on the morning glories to get some fresh water out of the bird bath but instead he/she was eating the morning glories.

Wow Tom - first love-sick otters and then Rocky Racoon (and he's definitely grinning a grin). If you see a panther or a cougar, I think that's a Grand Slam.

And I have to ask, CaptTurbo - did you name your otter after Totch Brown?
