Winter has a beauty all of it's own. Here is a favorite of mine taken a couple of winters ago.

Gldno1, your pics are just as beautiful, but in a different way. I LOVE taking winter pictures. I am amazed at how beautiful ice and snow can be.

Last January we had two days in a row of amazing winter weather. The first day the snow was really wet and coated everything in a soft, white blanket:

Then the next day we woke up to everything covered in these amazing spiky ice crystals. I had never seen such a sight!

Pat, that is a great shot; Tracy, no downed trees that I know of but lots of downed limbs. We have those miserable Siberian Elms and that is all they are good for.

I stood on the porch to take these shots and could hear popping and cracking everywhere. The wind is getting up....not a good thing.

I know how you feel! This last week we had unseasonably warm weather, but this weekend it's turning cold and we're supposed to have snow again.(frown!) Still your photos are beautiful.

Mrmorton - what created those fantastic icicles on your tree? I've never seen anything quite like it, and we get a LOT of snow around here. That's a great shot!

We had a freak snowstorm in OCTOBER here, and I posted my photos. 18 inches of snow, maybe that will make you feel a little better by comparison :-)

Nice to hear from you. Love the pics of Mother Nature doing her thing. She has many forms of beauty be it soft and gentle or powerful. Looks like we have some of everything here.

The front of that storm is on it's way to Ohio. Starting to rain already. The ice part is supposed to hit at rush hour tomorrow. Yuk. We've got tickets for The Trans-Siberian Orchestra Concert tomorrow night in Cleveland. It's about an hour away in the best of weather. Hoping the ground is still too warm to cause a mess. I don't do "nasty roads" well anymore.

This thread made me smile. We have a good 4 feet of snow. The weather this year has been interesting to say the least. We had snow in October. Then ice rain, and really heavy wet snow....lots of down trees and damaged trees here. (not in my yard though). We also had lots of wind that has also caused lots of damage. This week its been really cold...temps down to -27C to -38C with wind chill factor.

Sierra, I guess our little storm did make you smile. When I hear the temps in colder zones, I always wonder how they live through the winter, what do livestock do, how deep your water lines must be, what does machinery, cars, trucks, etc. do in that kind of cold?

I can't even imagine that much snow. Here a foot of snow puts things at a standstill.

Gottagarden...I don't know exatly what caused it, but I took a ton of pictures knowing I would probably never see anything like it again.
Geo, my wife and I have tickets to see TSO on Dec. 9th. Hopefully, we won't have nasty weather to deal wth. Enjoy the concert.

what does this "-27C to -38C" equate to in good old Fahrenheit?

MrMorton, I have the opposite problem :-) -27C = -17F, -38C = -36F. So it says weather.co.uk which has a neat temperature converter which I use all the time.

Sierra, where are you located? I can't even envision a zone 2! How come you are able to grow roses and what kind of roses?

gldno1, I have never seen an ice storm, but I have seen a couple documentaries about it and it looks scary. I have to admit it also looks beautiful, as do the shots of the freak October snow from gottagarden.

Ohhh, winter has its own beauty, doesn't it? I love to see the bare branches encased in ice - they look like crystal. I've seen that only one time in my four years here in NC, and was just amazed. Truly a "Winter Wonderland."

gldno 1...Well we stay indoors a lot, but we also do a lot of winter activities, ski, skidoo, and skate...stuff like that. Cars and trucks have block heaters to plug in, so they will start, when its really cold.

mrmorton...Sorry I don't know the exact conversion to Fahrenheit. But it was very cold! The weather people kept telling us to be careful of frostbite. Its warming up now though.

Eduarda....My growing season is approx. 86 frost free days. However, I have to really watch around the end of July to early August as we usually get a frost sometime in there. If I remember to watch for this and cover the tenders with garden blankets....I don't usually lose anything. Our first killing frost for the last 9 years has been August 31st...this year was the exception, I got almost another week and a half out of the garden, before the frost got it.

We can grow a lot of things here.....Most of my yard is garden. I have a few roses. The explorer roses, do well for me. T.Bugnet is another that is doing exceptionally well...Plus I have some Morden roses. This year I am trying Hope for Humanity and Bonica.....these are supposed to be hardy own root roses....so they may or may NOT make it through the winter for me. A lot is trial and error in this zone. I'm in Canada.

Maybe I should post some pics of my gardens? You know when I looked to see what zone you were in and saw 10...I am curious too....what grows in zone 10?

Thank you for your detailed answer, Sierra. Yes, I would love to see pics of your garden, as I'm sure the others would. You can post them in our gallery side, so as not to overburden the discussions side of the forum for those of us who don't have broadband access to the Internet.

As for what grows in a zone 10, well, it depends on the zone 10 - Florida and Portugal, though technically both in zone 10 have different growing conditions, with Florida being mostly tropical (warm and humid, especially in the Summer months) and us being hot dry Mediterranean (even though I can also grow many tropicals here). For a sample of what grows well for me, have a look in the gallery for a thread called "Will you walk into my parlour?" which features my garden this month. If you follow the photobucket link on my album up to the root you can then find my other garden albums, showing the garden in just about every season of the year. That should give you an idea about what I can grow.

My garden revolves basically around roses for Spring interest and then Fall and Winter interest. Summer is the tricky bit here, due to the drought and heat. As for roses, I'm mostly interested in antique roses, even though I also grow a few modern ones. My personal favorites that do exceedingly well in my climate are the old teas (NOT hybrid teas) and chinas. I love to hear that you also grow roses in a zone 2, although of course they have to be very hardy, such as the Explorers.
