What is the best flavored green plum/plum hybrid?
Comments (26)Whoa. I had no idea this forum post was updated. Carolyn, Definitely not looking for rot problems. The problem with getting recommendations for my region is that I have not found a reliable source yet - they just say "plums" and "apples" grow well here. I called my county's extension office and the guy was nice enough to email me some informative things but they didn't exactly answer my question about what is specifically known to grow well. Just now, I found an article online that says Frontier and Ozark Premier can be grown in the Southeast. On the other hand, Stark Bros. says Ozark Premier is "the best choice for the Ohio Valley and the Northeast, as well as the Midwest". So I've stayed in a state of flux and just used this forum mainly to see what people's experience with different varieties has actually been. At the time of this posting, I'd decided on Shiro and Satsuma. I want to get them from the same place and I want them the same size roughly so I've had a time locating a source. Comments (14)re: The "common or garden" smells stronger than the culinary. I have tried using both of them fresh and I'm not getting any flavor on either. First, fresh sage (fresh herbs in general) have milder flavors than dried herbs. If a recipe calls for dried sage, at least triple the amount if you're using fresh sage. This goes for other herbs as well, like rosemary and thyme and basil. As for which sage to grow for the best flavor, I planted my sage bushes from cuttings that I got from the grocery store. Sage, like many woody perennial herbs, can be started from cuttings. The packages you get at the grocery store will root. Get a package of 'organic sage' from the herbs section in the produce department. Strip off most of the leaves, with only the top 2 or 4 remaining, and use a sharp knife to slice diagonally across the lowest leaf node on the stem. I put mine in water for a week or two (change the water out every day or two to avoid mold and other potential issues). You'll see small roots develop on the bottom of the stem, and possibly from the next node up if it is submerged as well. If you want, there are "rooting hormone" products you can add to the water to stimulate the growth of the roots. Use well water or distilled water, not chlorinated "city water." When a few roots have developed to a few inches long, carefully transplant the rooted cuttings to some loose, light potting mix. Make sure it stays well drained, but also water regularly at first. After a couple weeks, cut back on the frequency of the watering to encourage more root development. If you're moon-superstitious, start the process right after a full moon, letting roots develop in water during the waning moon, and transplant two weeks later after the full moon. One other thing, sage isn't a heavy feeder. Resist the urge to fertilize if it's in the ground outdoors. If you must fertilize it, use a very light, sparing application of balanced (5-5-5) fertilizer, and only do that 2 or 3 times a year. High nitrogen fertilizers will grow a whole bunch of bland leaves and green stems. Balanced fertilizers (or none at all except for composted leaf mulch if growing outdoors) will grow it slower, but the leaves will have more flavor....See MoreBest beef flavoring base
Comments (13)Bob: Started using Chicken Soup Base back in the late 50's. It was only available from Restaurant Supplies then. I use Tallarico's Chicken Flavor Soup Base, now. It is very good.
