Apples 2014
Comments (57)The FB that I had 2 years ago effected all three of these varieties and I had to do some severe pruining on all 3, but no fb this year. I also moved DRD, so it spent this year acclimating itself to it's new location. I expect the first fruit from it next year. This year was the first year that Cauley and Summer Banana produced fruit. I'm a firm believer that you can't tell a whole lot from the first years' fruit. I don't let my apples carry fruit, until they are at least 5 years old. I learned that from David Vernon, who sold me the trees. All of that aside, both varieties produced a fair amount of fruit. Cauley is very hard, which I like, has a slightly yellow meat and a pleasant spritely taste, which I think will get better over time. It's prococious and I had to support many of the branches. I understand that it can produce fruit that can weigh up to a pound. Summer Banana is a totally diferent apple. It's mainly a tip bearer. The skin is yellow with white flesh that is somewhat bland to my taste. I didn't smell or taste any hint of banana, so i think the name is somewhat deceiving. I wonder, if Winter banana is the same. As I said before, I don't place a whole of value on first year fruits. I chose this tree because of the name and the fact it came from Marion County, here is SC, plus both of these apples have a historical significance. it's interesting to know what people ate here 200+ years ago. If you'll allow me to reminisce, I bought Bevan's Favorite because my grandfather used to have this tree in his backyard. I can remember climbing the tree, when I was a little boy, fighting my cousin for the apples. THEY SURE WERE GOOD....See Morebest dwarf tangerine, lemon, lime & fig?
Comments (17)The ultra dwarf on flying dragon are described as slow growing perhaps getting to 10 ft if I recall correctly. Many times only up to 7-8 ft. I'm hear it can make the fruit 40% smaller not just the crop smaller. After much reading I just bought 3 in san diego at pacific tree farms. They have a 25% off going out of biz sale. They were $32 before discount. I wanted to choose trees that fruited at different times so I can have fruit all yr. I got the cara cara navel orange. dec-mar kishu dwarf mandarin oct-dec And one I may return. Its the honey tangerine. I was told it could hold fruit until july but no sorce on the internet agrees. It also has many seeds. It turns out the pixie is the one I probably want. It is seedless, holds fruit until around july and is supposed to taste great. That should just leave me fruitless from aug-sept. Any good suggestions to fill that gap :) ? I still need to find out what roosstck they use on mine. They are from durling nursery. So consider fruiting time in your decision. I didn't want just the best fruit but the best fruit at any one time of the year. 600 lbs of citrus all in jan probably wont do you alot of good. Comments (16)OMG!!! Patty, that manderine you speak of, I HAVE ONE! Let me tell you when I say that it is sweet and seedless! In fact, I just gave the only 2,lol, yes 2 that I managed to grow to my mother and father. 1 each. They said they had never tasted a fruit like that before. When I first bouht it I was told they were that good, but did not believe it and still paid 39.99 for a very small tree. Now I am glad I did. This one is my special tree:-) It also seems to be a very tough one to kill. It doesn't react to being over or under watering like the others and it stays very green even without constant feed. It can also adapt to temps swings. It flowers prfusely and grows the fruits at an ease. Thanks for sharing your experience and good time with us. In fact, you were lucky they weren't selling the whole trees or you would be in the poor house. Now to reread your post and figure out what is next on my list. What a nice thing to do for your community too:-) Have a great day to all. Mike...See MoreWhat is your favorite tangerine variety?
Comments (21)Thanks Patty, I know Stan and have been to his place, he has mostly Brown Selects, which I have also, along with a few S9's. Stan the Citrus Man knows his citrus, however what I'm looking for is whats the most popular Satsuma on the west coast and gulf coast that will be ripe in early October on the east coast, before the California Clementines hit the market. How about the farmers markets out there, is there a Satsuma that folks ask for? or one that is a better seller then others. I have not tasted a mature Miho Wase, Xie Shan or Okitsu, but I have tried the Seedless Kishu and they are Super Good. I have some ordered now on rich 16-6, and will try them in ground in Ga. I'm just need to know what early Satsuma to get propagated. Thanks, joe...See MoreGreenLarry
