What is your Favorite Carrot variety?
Comments (35)Wayne, that's possibly Carrot Rust fly damage? That sucker is my main reason for heaps of floating row cover (1300' just for carrots). Everyone, this is all such great info. Maybe someone has a suggestion for me? I plant multiple varieties with different maturity dates in each planting to stretch the harvest period till the next planting a month later (total 6 plantings/season). This year I followed "Nelson" with "Bolero" and also "Purple Haze" and "Yellow Pac" for tri-color bunches with the "Bolero". My questions: I need a sweet yellow to replace Yellow Pac, which bolts under row cover. Also, I want to try a different, late maturing nantes to follow Nelson. Maybe "Nectar" ? And keep Bolero for the last (storage) planting. Thanks, Mark...See MoreWhat is your favorite, best-tasting heirloom kale variety?
Comments (9)I actually grew the larger bok choy last year and loved it. I love adding it to stir fries (simple). Another simple meals is to stir fry them with a little oil, garlic and ginger. I add some leftover chicken (rotissere works well) and add some chicken broth. It's yummy!! This year I'm trying the gai lan (Chinese broccoli). I read that you harvest when they're about 6-8 inches tall by cutting the stalks. Then they'll grow back and you can harvest at least 2 more times. Sounded like a great bargain! These I prepare Chinese style with oyster sauce but you could use them like broccoli or raab. Yummy! I love that you volunteer garden for seniors. What a great way to give back!!...See MoreWhat are your favorite tasting & best performing tangerines/tangelos?
Comments (21)Actually the Minneola Tangelo aka Honeybell is only one kind of Tangelo. There is also the well known Orlando Tangelo as well as many other lesser known ones. The origin of the name comes the combination of the words Tangerine & Pom"ELO". Both the Minneola & the Orlando are named after cities in the Citrus capital of the free world - Florida where they originated. Most of the common traditional citrus (and Mango) varieties all originated from breeding programs in the great state of Florida. Comments (2)Everyone either has favorites or is looking to discover favorites. There are so many varieties and types--one's preferences depend on one's tastes. Some people like sweet, some like tart. Some people like a soft texture, others like firmer. People have all kinds of preferences for size and shape, whether there is lots of seed/gel or very little. Choice of variety also depends on intended use. People who want to can or make sauce or salsa will select for different qualities than people who primarily want a salad tomato or a snacking tomato. Qualities that make a good salad tomato can be different from what make a great sandwich tomato. Some varieties are terrific for drying but not great for fresh eating. And so on and so on. People also need to account for their local growing conditions, so earliness/lateness, drought/water tolerance, heat/cold tolerance... Are you looking for inspiration on what to try in your garden? If so, let us know what you like in a tomato....See MoreCarol love_the_yard (Zone 9A Jacksonville, FL)
