Any recommendations of fruit tree nursery in the Bay area?

I need to start planning to replace my dead orange tree. I know Jene's Tropicals, but are there any others I should consider? I don't have a truck so I need a place that will deliver. Plus, I really want a large tree so I don't have to wait long for fruit.

I just wanted to add that anytime I want something out of the ordinary I use mail order nurseries. Specialty nurseries are often excellent, since they sell to those in the know. Very few retail nurseries, even those of excellent quality such as Yamagani's, can have depth as well as breadth. They can't afford to, since their market is the general gardening public. Perhaps their typical customer is more discerning than that, since they are shopping at a real nursery instead of a box store, but still they cannot specialize too much. One thing about fruit trees is that you may want to concentrate on California-based mail order businesses, if you decide to go that way. A couple of out-of-state nurseries I called were not allowed to ship the fruit trees I wanted to California. I believe that some of the really big ones (Stark) have less problem with this. Apparently there are all sorts of expensive agricultural inspection hurdles to mount for a nursery in another state to ship fruit plants to California. This is California protecting its agricultural base. Kinda surprised me, thinking how fast we are paving over the best agricultural land for expensive housing, but so it is. Rosefolly

oldryder I'm with fruitnut on your trees. Try putting down a 2-3" layer of well composted manure two weeks before last threat of frost. I bet that will wake them up. As far as the location of the nursery is concerned it many or may not matter as most get their trees from wholesalers. Its more important that you are buying varieties that are well suited to your zone with a proper rootstock for your soil and buying from reputable nurseries. St. Lawrence Nurseries is one of the few nurseries that grows all of its own trees in your zone but they are done taking orders for the season. Thanks for the suggestions! blakrab: Diciduous is ok. I'm surrounded by evergreens, so it's nice to have some diversity. not sure if we have any other open space to plant more though (property is overrun by coast live oak which sprout like weeds here. Every year I pull out about 20-30 saplings, and seems like I'm making no dent in the growth density here... every few years I have to have one cut down since they start crowding eachother too much). I'll take a close look at the Texas persimmon. Is that anything like the persimmons you find sold in stores? (orange fruit)? There are few of those in the area. if so, may be there'll be enough in the area without having to plant another in our lot... hoobv: it's a pretty densely vegetated hillside property, so fire is always a concern. But never really thought bout tree-fire exposure (we're usually more concerned with shrub/grass fire). I said 15ft, but just looked at the survey map, and it seems like it's actually more like 25 ft from the house. making a terrace is an interesting idea. the tree can be taller, as long as it's the type that is conducive to shaping/height reduction management. but taller tree usually means faster growth (may be) and hard to manage? and thank you for the tree selection guide. I'll ahve to take a look at that. An arborist who just came by recommended chinese pistachio. He said around here, it doesn't get much bigger than about 25ft or so, and has great fall foliage, drought tolerant.. doesnt require too much water in the summer so won't hurt the juniper either (I called it juniper, but arborist said cypress, so... hmm). The tree sounded good until I found out that it has a potential of growing to 60ft.. i'll have to do more research on that tree.

There are so many good nurseries here in St Pete and they prob. deliver... Willow Tree, also out on Haines Rd. just south of 62 Ave. No. are 2 very interesting places, Esmeralda's and Kathy's Korner.... have you looked in the phone-book and called around ? sally

Hmm, I know that in St. Pete one can just take papaya seeds and throw them in the yard and end up with a whole bunch of trees. In fact, I know someone there that did this while snacking outside on his deck about 4 years ago. He now has to give papaya away to his neighbors. It's not citrus but it's a great fruit!
Ooh, now is the time to grow papaya from seed here in Florida too (February).

October of last year was the best time to start the seeds to get lots of fruit before next season's frost in zone 9. They should be a foot or two tall now and ready to plant outdoors soon when all danger of a late frost is passed, but it all depends on your actual area.

I've always heard good things about Jene's.

I just was curious if there were others out there that people here on the board have had good experience with that I should consider.

I've grown Papayas of all kinds of varieties from seeds I've gotten out of papayas from Walmart, and fruit stands. Every type I've planted here has done great and I've always gotten fruit within the first year.
Anyways, there are 2 nurseries here on 49th st. in st. pete, one is called Willow Tree, the other is Carrol Brothers. Last time I was in they both had large citrus trees and I'm sure they will deliver. Also, Home Depot and Lowes usually have large citrus trees. I hate to say it, but those places might have the best trees at the cheapest prices. They also might be the most healthy because of the fast turnover rate.

Kennyn:...thanks for the info. I never would have thought that. I can always rent a truck I suppose. Not sure how to get it from the truck into my yard though...ha ha ha....

Does anyone know how large a citrus tree you can successfully plant? My thought is the bigger the better, but, I know there are limits. I just don't know what the guidelines are.

Lowes last week had a bunch of new small citrus trees - would fit in a car easily. My thoughts as I pondered them was that I needed to do some research, including, "do I need to furnish the pollination source". An advantage of a non-box store nursery is their useful advice.
