Hydrangeas in S. F.L

Good Morning does anyone grow these in Palm Beach Co.? I would like to try a white one. Also any luck with Fuschia Gardenmeister Bonstedt?

There was a nursery in Delray Beach, on Lake Ida Road, that grew Hydrangeas for several years. I tried some on several landscape jobs and didn't have any success this far south.

I am soaked. Today(wednesday) we decided to put the ducklings in a makeshift pen outdoors.Weather was brigt and beautiful.They loved all the space and their own pool(a Giant plant saucer) .And didn't it start to rain and then pour and then down pour with thunder and lightning.We had them agaginst the garage wall and there is no gutter so they were flooded.I had to go out in the pouring rain and get down on hands and knees to get them. (Is it still wading if you do it on your knees???) They were scared and drenced and in a corner so the task wasn't easy.And No i did not make another video,you wouldnt have been able to see for the rain. They are happily in a bin full of warm hay in the garage now. Anyone know how to house break ducks LOL

I don't think it is either too much sun or not enuf water - I think what you are looking at is cold damage. Open flowers on any type of bigleaf hydrangea now in the PNW is an indication that the plants are either greenhouse grown or from out of state. And the OP indicates these are NOT greenhouse grown plants. At my nursery, we get a lot of plants from California that are well ahead of our local bloom season - hydrangeas here do not start blooming until the end of June or early July. If they came from out of state, they may have not had sufficient time to become acclimated to our colder climate. And our PNW spring weather has been colder and wetter than normal - a relatively mild frost about a week and half ago nipped all the CA hydrangeas we had on the nursery floor and they ALL have an appearance very similar to the OP's - purplish foliage and crispy flowers and leaves. And while it may be warmer daytime in the WW-Milton-Freewater than it is here in western WA, I'd be willing to bet nighttime temps are still pretty chilly. If it is cold damage, they will come back from that rather easily, although you may need to trim off the damaged portions.

That would depend on a place where you are planning to put your container(s). Enziandom is a show-off hydrangea and deserves a such spot where it always be a conversational piece. In ground it grow rather wider than tall, but in container may behave differently. BTW, it has a lacecap sister-version, Nachtigale (Nightingale). All Domotoi I ever saw was very pale washed denim blue. Not a my cup of tea, but again, all depend of where you want to place it. Claudie is a very interesting hydrangea, but beside the bloom time it has nothing interesting to show after. The same apply to the Blue Bird, though since it is a serrata and seems to be most hardy of all common varieties, you may even could try it in a ground, not a container. I would, especialy for 9.99 :-) TD has those transitional color change phases as you know that could be worth to offset additional troubles you'll have by growing it in a container. I'd expect it to stay in 3x3' range (4x4' in a ground). One more thing to consider, color. In container you could easily keep soil either alcaline or acidic thus have any color you wish to, so chose the cultivar(s) of the appropriate 'natural' color you want to see. For the best red I'd chose Red Cardinal, for the best blue- Enziandom.

Apparently the foliage is getting wet and this is causing a bad leaf spot infestation. Water the soil and never the leaves to minimize the chances of getting fungal issues on the leaves. To know when to water, inset a finger to a depth of 4" and water if the soil feels dry or almost dry. If you water when the leaves are wilted, there is a danger that you are watering too much. The leaves will wilt/droop when they lose leaf moisture faster than the roots can absorb more water. The internal pressure differential causes the leaves to wilt then. Scenarios that trigger this condition: temperatures above 85F; too much sunlight (aim to give them dappled sun or morning sun until 10-11am; no afternoon or evening sun if possible); hot, drying winds; lack of water or lack of enough water; small root system (new plants) or disturbed roots due to transplants. Wilted plants can be left alone if the soil is sufficiently moist (use the finger method to check); they will perk up at night on their own if the soil has sufficient soil moisture. In the hot summer months, I make a habit to visually use the finger method when I see wilting and I water immediately if the soil feels dry. If the soil is moist, I let them be and I re-check in the morning. Somewhere around 6-8am when I wake up, I see if any is still wilted. If so, they get water. If you water just because they are wilting, you may be watering too much. That can cause leaf and bloom fungal problems (as seen in the picture) and-or root rot (if the soil remains soggy long enough). Watering twice a day can sometimes be done in well draining soils but try not to make a habit of it. In the fall, discard all foliage and blooms in the trash as they will contain lots of fungal spores; do not put them in the compost pile. If you deadhead any blooms now, discard them in the tras too. You can also cut off the worst of the leaves but do not assume you will get new foliage quickly while in the middle of the summer (maybe in the fall or in spring). Water the soil only, from now on instead. If using a sprinkler system, water around 6-8am so the leaves do not spend the night wet. Use clean sanitation practices (discard plant material in the trash if any falls down or is left in the fall; water the soil only; do not overwater; prune leaves so plants do not touch, something that can help increase air flow and reduce humidity, etc.) as best as you can to minimize spreading the fungal infection to other hydrangeas.

Katie- I bought 3 @ Target a couple of years ago. I don't know what kind they are. They are blue/green. 1 was killed by the recent cold snaps. I'm west of turnpike. The other 2 are OK. Morning sun afternoon shade. Love them.

I have grown that fuchsia up here in central Florida (Orlando/Sanford area) many times with good success. It holds up well most of the year, but I do grow it as an annual. By September or October, it begins to get kind of sad looking, and I've never gotten it to revive by cutting it back. However, it is so gorgeous (in full sun) that it is well worth potting up as an annual. Never tried it in the ground, but I often grow it with coleus. Hummers love it.

Ok can't hurt to try one it can only die and give me an excuse to try something else.

Marcia love the fuschia with the potato vine it is a gorgeous plant.

Thanks, Katie. Yes, I say try it. You might need to give it extra shade in the afternoons in Zone 10, but it should still make a good annual for you. It is so pretty. The only fuchsia I know of that really does okay in our heat, even if it only lives 9 or 10 months. The regular ones bloom and then shrivel right up and die, even in the shade. *sigh* Too bad, as they are really pretty. But the gartenmeister is just a trooper for a pretty long time. The one with the sweet potato vine was in a really big pot with all that other stuff, including several of my favorite coleus. It looked great for almost a year, so I got my money & time's worth out of it for adding color to the patio, I think.

I have bought it at both Home Depot and Target. They almost always have it available each spring, at some point.

And I know it looks funny, but I'm really not misspelling it. The plant was named for the famous botanist, Leonhard Fuchs, so it really is Fuchsia. (Don't blame me. It was HIS name. In fact, it is still a fairly common name in the south, I believe.)

You should definitely keep an eye out for this variety.

I have grown hydrangeas in Palm Beach County for a few years. I don't know which variety they are, but they are pink. I have them up against an East side fence. They get little or no direct sunlight. They have recently gotten a bit mildewy, but otherwise have done well. They really jump when I give them fertilizer for acid loving plants.
I love the pics of your potted plants Marcia, always such a great mix of color and different leaf shapes and textures.

Thanks, Nancy. I currently have not ONE SINGLE pot of pretty plants, anywhere. Not one. My yard is a wasteland. I'm going to post some freeze pictures later, if I get time to compress them.

And I can't believe you have hydrangeas. Good for you!
