It IS WET very very wet. It hasn't stopped raining heavy since 8:30 PM Monday night and the storm isnt here yet. We have gotten gusty winds but nothing to really be concerned about. I still have all the Satellte signals. The center of the storm is due over me in a few hrs now. Its all good because we really need the rain. I'm going to go nap.

Hope all is ok CT..I read how many are without power. I'm going to keep my eye on it in case it goes across and back to the Gulf. We just found a few gallons of our emergency water had leaked onto my wood floors a while back,still smells mildew-y...gah....lost a few old record albums due to that. But it gave me more T2T I guess :)

Hi, rina. I know wood chips are different than bark, but I saw a nursery that was using these mixed with some alder saw dust. In about a year it turned to this incredible black, rich "soil". The guy as the nursery said it breaks down better and more nutritious for the soil and depletes less nitrogen in the process. The wood chips I was seeking are about the size of medium bark in nurseries. In retrospect, I am glad I didn't try that. Works great outdoors, not sure about containers! The black bark is essentially composted evergreen tree bark. I say evergreen because it could be a mix of a number of different types here in the Pacific NW --- hemlock, fir, ceder, spruce, etc. I didn't screen it, it seemed plenty loose initially; small to medium size in comparison to bagged nursery store bark. It would have been o.k. had I added the peat and perlite per the formulas given here. Screening would have left just the larger pieces, but that would be quite a chore for the volume I was using! I repotted some of the plants using the 5:1:1 formula with my black bark and those are doing much, much, better. A gardening friend said "Think of it...bark is like big saw dust. If you pack it down it gets as hard as a board". That is essentially what happened when I used the black bark alone without the the perlite and moss. ;(

Exactly, the paper i pasted from describes the same phenom you have been describing for over 10 years. I have always raged that the big greenhouse media suppliers claim that 30% perlite into a peat is a high porosity mix. And so many growers prefer short squatty containers [helpful for blow over prevention but nothing else] Container Geometry is almost as important as the mix. i remember in 1984 I took a 400 level greenhouse management course at University of Delaware. The prof soaked a rectangular sponge and held it by the edges parrallel to the sink flatwise and let water drain, then he rotated the sponge on the shorter vertical axis and more water drained, when that free drainage ended he then rotated the sponge vertically in it tallest plane and more water drained. When I read your suggestion about using a draping shoelace as draining wick to lower the PWT the distance of the wick, I shouted YES at the elegant simple brilliance. In 1977 I grew a marijuana plant in a milk crate full of gravel, the stalk was over 2 inches in diameter [no different than growing in glass.] BTW, in your gritty mix what are the ratios and actual particle size for each component? I would think to use slightly larger particle sizes than i think you were using and i would probably consider using zeolite or a calcined DE or calcined clay. BTW, Ep minerals makes several absorbents both DE and Clay, Calcined or regular as various spill absorbers available in any auto parts store. 5o pounds for about 10 dollars. Don''t know the particle sizes but likely need to be screened to eliminate the fines. The clays are generally calcium bentonite and not sodium bentonite so less sodium and less swelling. I beileve Arcillite and Tuface are calcium bentonites. I was just thinking that decomoposed granite and even bark add no water holding capacity but with DE and Proper sized ceramics you could add more waterholding capacity but still maintain the airspace. The airspace in the ep mineral clay was pretty low when I measured it last, but I did not screen it. Somewhere I have a spreadsheet with AFP, WHC, TP, TPv, etc for over a dozen components and mixes. I have run quite a few in both 16 oz and taller 32 oz cups, [1 liter exactly when filled to rim overflow which makes that size intuitively easy for all the math. I think i found your posts about 3 years ago and then lost them. Am I correct in thinking you have some water release curve data around somewhere. Someone posted some WRC showing that Axis DE or perhaps the Axis clay media held huge amounts of water but easily released over 75% to the plant. TI can not find that post. I was actually searching for Vertical hydraulic conductivity, Capillary Rise and Capillary rate and wicking when your links showed up. The axis DE is like $90 a bag for 50 pounds so i think I could more cheaply reproduce from other products but have to screen. where I live in idaho, there is a Celatom DE plant less than 60 miles away, 2 zeolite mines, a sodium bentonite mine, WHC and Airspace mid 20s in the 2 larger particle sizess. Also the best white pumice [Hess] source mine a few hours away. I had hoped better water holding capacity. I plan on rerunning all the mixes again in a few months now that i have more standardized my process using multiple cup sizes, some of them tamped or shaken to settle, some top watered, some bottom water, measure distance of subsidence if any. I also have a vegetronix tensionometer now and will take additional measures at various depths to measure the exact tension and also verify depth of pWT which i can usually see through the transparent cups if I use a marking dye and saturate from below. Anyway I will share those spreadsheets in the near future If i were to guess, you have some sort of plant and soil science background or some civil engineering background and a love for plants. At any rate, your explanations and examples are some of the best I have ever come across, and your shoelace suggestion is brilliant, truly. i read so much WRONG advice or the wrong analysis for reason why something works or does not work. it is refreshing to come across accurate information Garret Goyette

Fay has slowed down so much the center of the storm is over my area now and has been since 3:45AM. Because there is no defined eye we are not getting a break fromthe clouds and rain. All this rain as flooded alot of the PAlm BAy Melbourne area. I'm not thratened by flooding but the yard is a small lake and the winds are driving the waves close up to the front door. Still not to worrried becasue I'm on a high foundation and it should be fine as long as the canals don't get over full. That is something I have never seen before. But I've also never seen a storm gain wind speeds as it moved over land either. Wierd storm Fay is. Now she seems to be slowing forward direction and is sitting here on us. The expected movement keeps her in my area all today and into the night. MAybe even longer. Arrrggghhhhh I'm growing alge!
Its still good here.
A tornado last night hit in BArefoot Bay (about 25 miles south of me)and tore up 50 + mobile homes. Nutty folks had not evacuated the place and there were some minor injuries but no one hurt bad. I have power and Satellite signal. So far only gusting wind and lots of RAIN. Thanks for the prayers for our safety. I hope most of the rain seaps into the aquafers rather than drain off. We have reached total ground saturation and it is a good thing the winds are not really that steady and strong or we'd have trees falling over because the ground wont support them.

I sure hate fire-ants,those things are up to your knees before you know it,before they give the signal to attack,lol...but I have seen HUGE nests floating down the river during floods,so many ants it looks like some red squirming creature.

Great video you got of the storm,hope the neighbors are ok,hope you and your family are all ok,too.

I read how the storm must have gained strength over the warm water of the Everglades,and there was a chance of FL getting hit 3 times with the same storm....stay safe!

oh my....as much as I love rain, this definitely is not good. Too bad Fire Ants don't drown huh? After seeing those pix and hearing the descriptions from you wet Florida junkers, I think I'll not complain about the heat too much now.

goldenpond, enjoyed your video. Fireants are scarey! We had few out here but they sprayed them & seem to end the problem (for now)I'll take earthquakes been through 2 major ones. You can dig through ruins & find most of your stuff & it's not wet,moldy or blown away!! Maybe that boat should be anchored to house LOL! Jan

I am not in danger of flooding at home but I can't get more than a mile from the house because of the flooding. Tried to make it to work a little while ago and the rains are coming down hard and heavy again here in Palm Bay. I might have made it out but then I wouldn't make it home again. It was hard just to get the short distance I went. So I called in and told the bosses I couldn't make it. Their only comment was "Okay no problem STAY SAFE".

Thanks for the photos and video Goldenpond. Thats about what it looks like all around me. Fire ants floating are some of the worst of the hazards because once they bump into something they will attack and swarm up anything.

Still Fay sits and spins just a few miles north of me and the forcast expects her not to move until after noon. They also have mo real idea which direction she will travel excwpt West maybe Northwest. She could move Southwest and dump on us again. Fay is going to be retired as a storm name. Only the second TS name to be retired. I think it was TS Allison retired years ago.

We were suppose to be moving to the Jacksonville/St Augistine Area.... Hubby work... Headquarters..... BUT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Heck..... I might have a hard time talking him into to it now.... He was down to the coast in Texas this last week.... but.... I am sure praying for A L L of the Water for each and every one of you GJ FRIENDS ! ! ! OMG!!!!! What is that light in the sky?!?! IS IT? Can it really be?.......OH MY......... It is the SUN! WOO HOO after 9 days the skies are a brilliant blue with light white fluffly clouds slipping along in the gentle tropical breeze and sunshine sparkles off everything,.
Yes the grass has grown to knee high but the fruits on the tress are plump and juicy. (I can't beleive we didn't loose alot of the fruits in the winds.) There is yard work to be done but it is one of those tropical days of perfect weather that make all the storms seem not so bad. Still have alot of standing waters but the floods are receding in most parts around me.
Now tracking "areas of concern" in the tropics.

By the time Fay came to the Florida panhandle it had fizzled out and we only got a little rain yesterday, and a few wind gusts. (Thank you, Lord!) Basicly the eye was over Pensacola, I think, and the bands were going North and then West of us. (I just got the fourth and final roof finished on Friday, from the damage of Ivan and Dennis,plus the others we had that year! LOL There are still many 'blue' roofs here.)

I am soaked. Today(wednesday) we decided to put the ducklings in a makeshift pen outdoors.Weather was brigt and beautiful.They loved all the space and their own pool(a Giant plant saucer) .And didn't it start to rain and then pour and then down pour with thunder and lightning.We had them agaginst the garage wall and there is no gutter so they were flooded.I had to go out in the pouring rain and get down on hands and knees to get them. (Is it still wading if you do it on your knees???)
They were scared and drenced and in a corner so the task wasn't easy.And No i did not make another video,you wouldnt have been able to see for the rain.
They are happily in a bin full of warm hay in the garage now. Anyone know how to house break ducks LOL

Oh the poor babies! Those are gonna be some traumatized,neurotic duckies,LOL.....I have no idea how to house break a duck, so best of luck to you, and I'm glad you have a garage for them :)

You're a good mama duck Goldenpond. I think if you are on your knees in a puddle it is called wallowing. LOL

I'm enjoying the techni-color lightening storms lately. Lastnight we were downtown having coffe and the sky lit up in blues and greens then a fabulous purplish and right into an orange. Then the cold rain hit like a bucket being dumped for 40 min.
