Carol in Jacksonville...getting any sleet/snow/ice?!?!

Hi Carol...watching the news and weather, are you in the path of this sleet/ice/snow?

Anyone else living in that area that normally doesn't see this type of weather and right in the middle of it?

We've been very lucky here, when they were forecasting this a week ago...it looked like we were going to get some pretty serious "freezing temperatures" also, nothing compared to what they are dealing North of us...but freeze damage was very likely...Thank goodness we did not end up in its path.

Hi Pug!

No, we haven't so far and it is not expected. We are at 38.1F right now and the low last night was 35.5F. We've had some light rain and drizzle but the big rain/front still hasn't reached us, believe it or not. The low for tonight is forecast to be 30, 31 or 32 depending upon your meteorologist. Lots of us believe the forecasts to be the official temperature at the airport, which is about 20 miles north and west of me.

We HAVE had hard freezes here this year already. All of my gardens look like cooked spinach. It is inevitable. It happens every year at least 2-3 times. I cover and protect everything that is important. I've dragged lots and lots of clay pots in/out of the garage and kitchen several times already. I will do it again tonight because you never really know. I live almost smack halfway between the ocean and the St. Johns River and so I get protection from neither. I'm in a colder microclimate rather than a warmer one in Jax. :( I have planted lots and lots of trees over the years and I am starting to reap big benefits from that!

Sultry Jasmine Nights may be getting more severe weather - she is in north Jacksonville. And Zackey is in south Georgia. She certainly has it much worse. Kay Jones has already posted lots of ice and sleet all over her yard. I know she has had it bad. My guess is that most of you south and central to me are ok.

Thanks for asking! I often feel stuck up here away from the "gang"!

Hang in there, Carol!

I think it will all be over by March, right? I'm still moving things in and out/in and out, too. It's getting really old, but I keep counting down til that last frost date.

It will be beautiful spring then steaming summer before we know it! And your garden will return to all its glory . . .

I live in Upstate NY - near the Canadian border - yes, WAY upstate - Zone 4a! I wanted to post some pictures of the ice storm that we had around Christmas. Many of our trees were destroyed - seriously. I have a White Pine that I loved - blocked the view of the house - that is basically sheared away in the middle. Still not sure what we are going to do with this. Many trees were just snapped. My Tamarack snapped and the top ten feet of the tree broke off. Three Red Cedars almost done for. Poplars that were sheared. I will be honesty and say it is hard for me to go back and look at these pictures. Almost two months later now we have cut and chipped some limbs (figured we better get started on this early) that are already on the ground. The big Black Cherry we had to skid out with the 4-wheeler and we cut down the remaining truck and skidded that out too. We have had quite a bit of snowfall as of late so getting in there with the chipper is not possible now. When we bought this property it hadn't been maintained all that well in the last few years. We have worked hard the last three years sprucing it up and to see this act of God hurt. It is ironic to me because I know how obsessed, literally, I have been with it and to watch God allow it to be cut down in a matter of days - wow! Maybe He is trying to tell me something - more important things in life???? My DH kept telling me it could have been worse - tree through the roof, etc. - he is right I know but still hard for me to swallow - I loved all the work we had done. If anyone has any suggestions as far as what to do with these - obviously some have to be cut to the ground - I'd appreciate to hear anyone's opinion. White Pine Before/During Ice Storm - entire middle section is pretty much missing. You can see the snapped branches - I couldn't believe how many I hauled out of there that were just snapped off. Tamarack with top ten feet snapped out of it. Next to White Pine in above picture. Three Red Cedars as the ice storm was just starting/and now. Black Cherry Limb snapped off - honestly, this is the only one I really did want gone. Back of the house: You can see the White Birch that is hanging toward the house in the center and over another smaller red cedar. This tree is really three trunks and I imagine we will be cutting it down this Spring. The one limb never went all the way back up and the other two trunks are snapped at the tops.

Yup, ice seems to be a lot more difficult than mere snow or rain. Everything being equal, I wouldn't have minded if it was all snow that we got. We lost some sort of power on a couple of circuits for a while Wednesday night. My engineer DH said the power supply had lost one of its "legs" and would be repaired but in the meantime we were not loading up our circuits....it also blew some part in our GFI plug, so DH fixed it to put us back in business. An odd thing happened though....I started seeing the flash of an EPIRB (Emergency Positioning Indicator Radio Beacon) used solely on boats, and it was in the dark right across the street...but I was confused by a massive flood of LIGHT everywhere, I mean INTENSE....our street light had gone out too....But meanwhile in the back of the house, unbeknownst to me....DH was watching out the BACK door the lights of a USCoast Guard rescue helicopter casting about with some high power bulbs.....just above the trees, and DH could read the letters and see the red stripe on the fuselage so no doubt what it was....just what was it doing over our house. So see, DH had half the puzzle and I had the other half, and it was almost simultaneously that we lost power on those circuits. Of course, I realized that I was right about it being an EPIRB flashing and on such a stormy cold night, the USCG scrambled to save a vessel in distress....which was no vessel but was simply the beacon rolling around in the back of a car parked in front of a house...very careless. About 30 minutes later, the beacon stopped flashing....you know they identified the location or the owner of the EPIRB and told them about it. But you know, I am always inventing stories... I had several possible scenarios written featuring this EPIRB event. I thought it was pretty unusual. And just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me. :) (one of my favorite sayings too) Well, we had 3 nights straight down super cold with sleet/ice/snow and there remains a bit of ice and snow in the yard. One patch of frost (there this morning) on the roof of DH workshop had melted every place except for a wide diagonal patch of tree trunk shading it. I noticed tonight that with the brightness of the day, all my solar yard lights were twinkling brightly. Hopefully we'll be warmer tomorrow night. DH has some frostbite on his fingers, even with gloves he said. And now I'm thinking he's coming down with the flu or ague or some kind of virus. He, a native New Englander, says he has never been so cold in his life, he cannot get warm. I know that is what folks always attribute our moaning about being cold due to our normally high humidity with the cold...but that happens other places too....so I think he is getting ill.

Randy, Glad you've escaped the ice also. I'd be happy to share the cinnamon rolls with you but I didn't make any! I thought I'd make them early this morning so they'd be hot, or at least still warm "when" the VFD started getting paged out on wrecks. Since there was so little ice, I didn't make 'em. Now, I'm hoping I guessed right that the VFD won't be spending the day out in the cold.....but I did make a big crockpot of taco soup, so they will have a warm lunch or dinner if things deteriorate. Still raining with a little sleet mixed in, but it isn't freezing after it falls. Last time I checked the temp on the porch, the thermometer showed a warm and balmy 33 degrees. Dawn

LOL just noticed the title... should have been (") inches, not feet! lol Oh, but Carol, I think I would find it boring to have the same weather every day. Day in day out. Beth, I grew up in Edmonds! How long has he lived there? So many broken trees. the sound was amazing though. The bad part is over. It's been about 35 degrees all day and raining. The wet cold, well it's bone chilling when you are out in it, but at least no more sleet!

Hi Carol, it is nice to hear that you didn't get any snow or ice, we also had a very cold and rainy day. Keep warm!

M, I don't like the cold weather either, I am sure that your beautiful garden will return to all its glory coming spring.

Nancy, it is good to know that you didn't get any freezes, so far so good around my area too. With the rain I didn't even think to cover the plants.

36 was our high today. It was predicted that the bridges might freeze. Thank God they didn't! I had a Derm appt. today that took a month and a half to get. I wish I could have stayed home instead!!The roads and bridges were fine, but I was on edge. We have been here almost 7 years and have never seen weather like this here. Tonite and tomorrow could be a different story. About 28 degrees for tonite and lots of rain predicted. Glad I can stay home tomorrow!!!

We had a severe freeze over three days. Wed. it started out at 27 and go no warmer - it's still at 27 degrees this morning. The buses can't run on the icy side streets, so school's out again today.

My yard would make a wooden man cry - it looks like floral ice sculptures!

Sorry to all that's dealing with all this winter misery!! Hang in there everyone!! The next ten days after today seems a lot warmer...too hot for me actually,lol...Why can't we have a happy medium!?!...like Highs in the low 70's in Feb.? Oh well...I'll take the hot over the Freeze any day :o)

Silvia, I didn't get off completely Scott free...I did have one morning (Jan. 19th) Hubby's birthday of all days... 27-32 degrees for at least 7 hours...Mango trees sustained some "cold damage" to the leaves...not sure how that's going to affect the blooms? Happy to hear you fared much better :o)

This is a picture of my house yesterday afternoon in Panama City - the icicles formed overnight Tuesday night. They finally melted today - we never got above freezing yesterday.

Cool, huh?

(I'm ducking now in case someone throws something at me for that bad pun.)

Have been bummed out the last 4 weeks, yanking 4 big potted plants in and out overnight,..turning on the Christmas tree lights strung thru the mango trees, crossing my fingers, etc. But sure happy I am where I am. Figure this winter has just about run it's course, ..hereabouts anyway. And after our glorious December, am thrilled in general with this winters cold spell.
Here we've have had little to complain about !

The icicles DO look really cool Laura...though I don't wish it on any our gardens and plants...pretty to look at!

Its been a tough January for a lot of us in parts of FL and our neighbors to the North...

Hoping for a milder February :o)
