Just wanted to let everyone know that we did, in fact, put a guardian generator next to our new house. It is a 16 kw powered by natural gas. Since we use gas for our dryer and stove the generator can basically power the rest of the house. Our electrician wired it directly into the breaker box, so when it comes on the transfer switch disconnects from the grid and you can run the circuits you want in the b-box. I have test run it and it handles the freezer, fridge, lights and the central air conditioner (3 ton unit). Our house never lost gas during Camille, Frederick, Elena, Georges or Katrina. It's always a possibility but I feel pretty confident on this score. At current prices it costs about 2-3 dollars an hour to run. Not cheap, but believe me, after Katrina I would have paid a lot more than that for a cool place to stay and some lights. Once installed you set it to test run once a week. I ran mine for several hours under no load, then light load, medium load, and full load. Once you've done that you change the oil and button her up. I will change the oil at the beginning of each hurricane season and have already purchased enough filters for 20 days worth of running. They got the power back here after 14 days in Katrina, so that should be enough. Access for changing oil is a snap and I've stored the wrenches necessary in the enclosure. It is very quiet when test running, much louder under load. I would suggest buying online--we saved quite a bit on the purchase price. It is much easier to install one of these with new construction--but a good electrician should be able to install one in an older house without too much trouble. Ok, I'll jump in here. ~ We are NOT watching TV, haven't been for months now, got burned out. Lived without it for about 15 years, so can do so again. ~ Anyway, we are tracking the weather online. Listening to or watching the 'hype' that happens every time a hurricane 'might' happen is a 'drag'. Life is too short and precious to spend time listening to 'crap', pardon the expression, but that's what I think. A line that I remember from a book made a big impression on me says this, "fear is the mind-killer, it will pass but I will remain." The news media push fear more than anything. Yes it is sensible to watch these storms, and to prepare. But to be 'pushed' by their hype to act in fear, is ridiculous and is just making them and their sponsors big bucks. With that I will close my little post. May the winds not be strong, may there be no damages, just some liquid sunshine for our gardens, which will be a welcome relief, and make our gardens grow better and happier. 'If' we happen to get something worse, may we all be given the grace and strength to do what we have to do to get back to normal once again. (Whatever normal is.) I digress. Hi I also have been a member for a long time and generally find the quality of the forums has went downhill over time . Was so excited when I first found GW as the list of forums was mind boggling. lol I'm particular interested in various types of plants as well as methods to grow them. Some that have declined the most are "Tropical, Palms terrariums,aquariums, I particularly enjoyed the posts from people in tropical countries where you got to see a glimpse of true tropical gardens. Venezuela, Malaysia ,Phillipines, Australia. And the growers of botanical garden rarities. They frequently sent pix of things I could only dream of seeing lol I think most notable is the decline in the numbers of posts . many have declined to almost no posts I still have a post on the first page of the Botany forum that is several years old . One fantastic post was from a man who was visiting Madagascar and he sent me pix of actual habitats!!! And he knew the dif betwen a Lace plant and an Aponogeton .lol WOW where would you get that kind of help?? Oh well, I'll keep coming back .What else are you going to do at 4 in the morning??? gary

:D (my big happy grin!!) Okay, so can I email somebody pictures to post for me? I just use FB as my picture hosting site now. No more photobucket. We had a great time in Boston for the long Labor Day weekend. It was too short notice to find somebody to watch 6 kids while they're in 5 different schools, so we'll take a real honeymoon in the Spring (thinking Costa Rica!) Still living separately for another month or so until the house is done (it ain't easy! lol)

For those of you with dogs, I get a couple of pieces of sod, put down some plastic in the garage and then put down the sod. The dog now has a place to go during the hurricane and it can be used out side after it's all over. And clean up is easy. Good especially if you have a small dog like I do, only 12 lbs.

Do you have a safe place in your house? A bathroom, or even a closet without windows? This looks like it's going to be a pretty minor storm, but if the forecasters are wrong, you'll be more comfortable if you prep it a little.

Before Wilma hit us as a Cat 1, I put a flashlight, pillows and a book in one of my bathrooms, figuring I'd never need to go there for a Cat 1, but it was something to do. Then, I watched Wilma through my many windows, fascinated by the debris washing in from the Bay. Then a window I wasn't standing near broke and I grabbed the cats and went to the bathroom for a couple hours, feeling pretty foolish, and lucky.

I hope you don't need it, but it can't hurt to prep it.

Another thing that I don't see mentioned often, but can be important, is to keep a pair of shoes either on or less than a step away. Having to walk over even a little bit of broken glass can really ruin your day. Especially here in Florida, where a lot of us go barefoot at home, it's a good thing to remember.

(I learned this in a combat survival class I took to prepare for covering a war. And I've only used the first aid training once, for a minor gardening accident right here at home. I can also attest to the fact that some men, when bleeding profusely enough _ and that's often not very much for men _ will consent to having feminine hygiene products taped to their hands. They work as well as bandages in a pinch. :o)
