Figured we should use that forum for its intended purpose. Never will forget how we had to beg to get it after Charley, so we could have a place to talk without our posts being deleted as off topic.

Ok, I'll jump in here. ~ We are NOT watching TV, haven't been for months now, got burned out. Lived without it for about 15 years, so can do so again. ~ Anyway, we are tracking the weather online. Listening to or watching the 'hype' that happens every time a hurricane 'might' happen is a 'drag'. Life is too short and precious to spend time listening to 'crap', pardon the expression, but that's what I think. A line that I remember from a book made a big impression on me says this, "fear is the mind-killer, it will pass but I will remain." The news media push fear more than anything. Yes it is sensible to watch these storms, and to prepare. But to be 'pushed' by their hype to act in fear, is ridiculous and is just making them and their sponsors big bucks.

With that I will close my little post. May the winds not be strong, may there be no damages, just some liquid sunshine for our gardens, which will be a welcome relief, and make our gardens grow better and happier. 'If' we happen to get something worse, may we all be given the grace and strength to do what we have to do to get back to normal once again. (Whatever normal is.)

I digress. Have a great week in spite of the weather.

I keep a lot of notes. I started out just putting everything into one big document but it made it so big and disorganized that I finally just started keeping separate ones. Just named them simply, "Gourds", "Garlic", "Tomatoes", "Peppers", etc so I can find them quickly. I never print them out cause then I lose them! Or they get wet and the ink runs. I have found that some things grow better in containers, some grow better at ground level and some grow better in raised beds. And all that probably depends on the type of soil a person has. Mine is black gumbo clay. Beth, I'm proud of you for having the resolve to get off government assistance. I deplore the way the program is run. I would so love to see them add classes for the people on their programs. Many of them don't even know how to cook so they're spending those food stamps on expensive convenience foods instead of, say, buying a whole chicken. I get three good meals out of one whole chicken. When I'm done with it, there's nothing left but some soft bones and a little limp skin, which I bury out in the garden and then put something on top of it so the dog can't dig it up. But anyway, education is the key, to my mind, and you are wise to be trying to learn to garden. Even if a person can only grow something in a pot, they gain knowledge from the experience. There was a man selling corn out of his truck in a parking lot near here over the weekend. He was getting $7 a dozen for his ears of corn and they weren't real big. And he had a few black diamond watermelon but he wouldn't sell them because he said the ones he had sold had come back because they weren't ripe yet. He was selling them for $10 each. He'll probably be back next weekend with ripe ones, if all this rain doesn't split and ruin them all. Think of all the corn you could grow for $7, and all the watermelon you could grow for $10. Even if the rain did split the melons, if you got out there right away, brught them in and processed them, you'd still get good value. You can save seed from grocery store vegetables. Sometimes they'll be hybrids so they won't grow exactly like what you bought, but they'll grow something. I've gotten some wonderful cantaloupe by having the seed in the compost bin germinate. And I planted grocery store Arkansas tomatoes this year. They made beautiful round tomatoes but the flavor wasn't nearly as good as George's Baker Family Heirlooms. Sometimes I check out the marked down produce just for the seed that I might get. Last year I grew spaghetti squash from the seed of a grocery store purchase.

You WILL find the right words to console your husband. You have already found the right words to convey to us. You ARE stronger than you think you are. You ARE a mother! ~ We grieve with you and for you. I think this entire experience which you have been so gracious to share with us has brought out the goodness and grace in both you and us......and for that we can all celebrate. You are closer to us than possibly any other poster. You have touched our hearts and souls and brought out the best in all of us. Right now the sun is shining, but it looks like we might get some rain later on. The water ended up being above DH's ankles in his greenhouse but has now gone down about an inch. A lot of clean-up, including the roof. That's ok, more debris to put in back of the house to build it up further back. Holly (DD#3) didn't fair as well. They had water come through to their living room floor...again. This is the third time. They've sprayed water-proofing on the outside brick but it looks like it might have to be done yearly. As long as this wasn't listed as a hurricane, they don't have to pay the hurricane deductible and they've decided they don't want to deal with wet carpet again (we were there the first 2 times) so they're thinking about tile. Looks like next week-end is planned for us. Her surgery is on Tuesday so she'll be out of commission...I told her I'd cook a turkey for sandwiches for everybody. I don't know how that double posting happened, must have been during one of the surges....sorry. We've pretty much dodged another one...thank you everyone for your prayers. SharonG/FL

Oh beekeeperswife, Thank you so much! Invaluable, indeed! I can't remember the last time I paid full price for anything, or shipping or......well, you get the picture. But it seems I spend a lot of valuable time searching and searching the net for the best coupon, the best deal, the best bargain. Having common-used (decor/home related) coupons in one place is an excellent idea, Thank you!

I think we all appreciate hearing a variety of opinions and your passion on the subject is clear, but if you had not commented on this thread it would have stayed at the top of the page for a while longer. Given the gravity and timing of the subject, that would have been a good thing, I think. We have lots of member who are new to the area and have not lived through a hurricane or even a tropical storm. They need the information we can all share and making it easy for them to find that information should be the goal.

Hey Coffeemom, pass Flower one of those Pom/Rasp Michelobs. I think she needs it!!!

Sorry FL,we all get our knickers in a knot at times, but this is the best FORUM and we have to give our news and weather reporters credit for doing what they do. I would rather have them SCARE me into moving all my plants off the patio and "hunkering" down and hugging my butt, then telling me .... 'it's gonna be windy and rainy', and wake to no roof, no windows, no life!! We had a "no name" storm tear out 1/2 of the Sanibel/Captiva Islands road a number of years back. I was dating the NEWSMAN at WINK. He cancelled our dinner with my parents and any dates a week out because his concern was about reporting "what he knew". Nature is not something we can guess at. It happens! Like I said, I would rather be "hunkered down" than sorry.

OK that's MY rant. Who brought beer??? LOL be safe guys!
