Hurricane Tips & Old Friends

Here's a link to a great thread from 2005. Yeah, I know that's a long time ago but when we all wrote this one it was a year after the The Big Hurricane Year and we compiled some great thoughts and advice. As we get into the busy part of the hurricane season there are some good things there to remember.

I was thinking about this as I watched the opening of the Olympics last night because 4 years ago, during the opening of the Games in Athens, Hurricane Charley hit. I was so mad when the TV went out! At the moment it happened I had no idea the damage was going to be so terrible.

As I read over the hurricane thread of messages today I was struck by how many of the GardenWeb friends who were regulars at the time are no longer posting. I know Fuzzy moved out of state and Bruggirl got into a tiff with Spike and "was sent to Disney". I miss them both. We also haven't seen many messages lately from Nicki but I get to see her once in a while so I know she's OK. And I talk to Patsums once in a while too but not often enough; I miss her posts too.

Has anyone heard from any of these folks?

We were just talking about some of the people you don't hear from anymore, Lady was one of them and Joanmary. And I remember when Fuzzy moved too. Didn't Irma in St Pete post something just recently.

I also vote to stake them. I had some several-year-old apple trees actually tip over in our sand in a moderate wind storm. My daughter and I pushed them back straight and staked them. That was a couple years ago, and believe it or not, the trees are still doing okay. Staking may not help, but it's worth a shot. Northwoodswis

Good grief will someone turn off the artic blast machine???? Its 16 degrees out right now at 3:30PM with winds gusting to 35+. Wind chills are off the charts and hitting new records. The cats are driving me nuts. Luke must be feeling better because hes been crying for the door for the last four hours. Rahjii is wailing away and it is just too dangerously cold for him to be outside but there is no way to explain that to a cat. So I cant get a thing done because this cat keeps sticking his nose in everything Im trying to do. Hes already knocked the mouse on the floor and I only just turned on the computer. Grrrr Have I mentioned that I hate the wind??? So the other thing is that it is supposed to go down to -1F tonight. I can see the holly and English Ivy dying a bit more each day these cold temps keep up. I shudder to think what is going to be toast in the gardens when spring rolls around. I know, I know V. consider it a new opportunity. Winter doesnt normally get me down but this hideous cold and windy weather is beginning to really bug me. Holy moly. The side of the dining room just got slammed by a 12 foot pine branch!!!!!!! Came flying through the air from one of the trees next door. Glad it didnt get my duck blind. Have I mentioned I really hate the wind. So, Martie, I agree with Cindy 100% that kind of malicious, threatening and harassing email is unacceptable. Is there any way you can find out where that email came from? I think we need to find out who it is and do something about it. There is no excuse for anyone to get threatening emails from a gardening forum or on any forum for that matter. I know you want to take a break for a while and I dont blame you a bit but would you please forward that to me so I can get my computer gurus working on it and finding out who it is so it can be reported to the proper authorities. I know Eileen also got disturbing emails in the past and that kind of underhanded, vicious stuff makes my blood boil. T. how neat about the Elk but what a bummer that the boys are so out of sorts lately. Ive heard that isnt uncommon with twins but dont know why. ~~ Hope you find out whats wrong with the car. That would have me unsettled, not to have a reliable automobile when you aren't close to town. Babs, I LOL over the sandwiches. Too funny that Ryan ate both sandwiches. LOL So Sue, maybe when we TONAW next year we ought to do it on Key West???? Bug, that photo of your DD and DH is priceless!!!! I just love that. Flowers are lovely also. I forgot to tell you how much I like that red cable piece you are knitting now. Are you quite sure you dont want to knit something for me???? LOL Cindy, LOL about the snow having to melt on its own. My grandmother used to say "God put it there let him take it away". Yes, Im thinking that there must be people lurking here who glean this site for ideas. The chances are astronomical that a greenhouse would just happen to begin carrying those particular varieties out of the thousands that are available. I actually found one of my container combinations on the Proven Winners site last year. Could have been coincidence but who knows. Just wanted to let everyone know that we did, in fact, put a guardian generator next to our new house. It is a 16 kw powered by natural gas. Since we use gas for our dryer and stove the generator can basically power the rest of the house. Our electrician wired it directly into the breaker box, so when it comes on the transfer switch disconnects from the grid and you can run the circuits you want in the b-box. I have test run it and it handles the freezer, fridge, lights and the central air conditioner (3 ton unit). Our house never lost gas during Camille, Frederick, Elena, Georges or Katrina. It's always a possibility but I feel pretty confident on this score. At current prices it costs about 2-3 dollars an hour to run. Not cheap, but believe me, after Katrina I would have paid a lot more than that for a cool place to stay and some lights. Once installed you set it to test run once a week. I ran mine for several hours under no load, then light load, medium load, and full load. Once you've done that you change the oil and button her up. I will change the oil at the beginning of each hurricane season and have already purchased enough filters for 20 days worth of running. They got the power back here after 14 days in Katrina, so that should be enough. Access for changing oil is a snap and I've stored the wrenches necessary in the enclosure. It is very quiet when test running, much louder under load. I would suggest buying online--we saved quite a bit on the purchase price. It is much easier to install one of these with new construction--but a good electrician should be able to install one in an older house without too much trouble. For what its worth.......................

I agree with what Tom is saying overall. The reason I would consider cutting trunks apart is that 2 thickest ones are 'splaying' too wide apart. Then they could be repositioned in their own pots (didn't mark it, but thinner one should be cut off too). I would cut off that branch on right very close to the trunk, as I attempted to indicate, or cut thru the rootball. IMO, either would work: Theoretically, any trunk can be rooted. Obviously, it needs to be healthy. And thicker it is, longer it will take to callus. There is bit of risk, but personally I would try - but that is just me. OTOH, you could leave 2 thickest branches/trunks attached and prune heavily rest of the plant, keep it in great light, and in few years those trunks will straighten-up to some extend. Something like this: I didn't mark that thinner trunk again, but I would cut that one off regardless - so I won't mention it again. That would leave you with wider plant, but not as 'splayed' as before. There will be branching where you make cuts, so take that in consideration for eventual shape. Pruning and repotting is best done during active growth, which would be late spring to summer. However, it is ok to repot in situation where not doing so could cause problems. So for that reason only, I wold separate trunks (1 or 2), and pot them up into better mix than just C&S soil: please improve drainage by adding lots of sifted perlite (or pumice if available). C&S soil from the bag usually is not as well draining as advertised. 1:1 mix is what many ppl use. You could do some light pruning too to make plant bit narrower. But I can not stress how important is the light; unless you make sure plant is getting it, all new growth will be lanky. You may need some support for the plant until roots get anchored in the new mix. I usually use just larger rocks, but sometimes you may need to tie it up - especially if potted in grainier mix (which, IMO, is a must). Here is a photo of one such plant, secured by rocks and wire. There is padding where wire is touching the plant trunks, and it is removed when roots are established: Here is a photo of frost-damaged jade that was given to me. Most of the thinner branches fell off. Here is the same plant approx. 3.5 yrs later - as you can see trunk has grown much more upwards, and straightened itself quite a bit. There is orange line indicating original trunk that was bent over - there was no support of any kind: I have pruned drastically some bigger jades in 'off season', but not as big and old as yours. Plant was not as needy as yours, I was more-or-less experimenting...See THIS THREADfor some photos and dates. Pls. remember that we are looking only at the photos provided, and we can't see plant from every angle. So as for shaping, you have to make decisions.

I'm an old girl also. I joined Aug 2001. You can usually find me at the Hoya Forum nd Cactus & Sucs. forums. I am usually lurking and will post once in a while, if I have something new to add. A few years ago I was very active in plant trading. I had a nice collection of plants until Frances and Jeanne in 2004 took them away. LOL. Thanks for re-posting the Hurricaine tips.

Guys, remember BrugGirl posted that she was leaving Florida for Georgia? I still get a kick out of her post about what won't grow here - it pops up now and then.

So where did Retro go? (Remember the house-moving post?) And Walt in Fla? And PuggyBW?

I can't imagine ever being without this forum, even if I moved from this state! I would still come back here. But there have been times that I had to get GardenWeb out of my favorites for a spell because I was so addicted to it and spent more time on the computer than was appropriate!

There are a lot of people I miss. Lady, Bill, AmberSky are just a few. I have learned so much on Garden Web over the years.

I still stop in and mostly lurk from time to time, not on the computer much anymore. Lady says she's had computer problems so she's not been on much lately either. I think Retro got mad at someone on the forum and decided not to be on it anymore.

Ahh, 2004. I'm sure I didn't post then. My husband got his first chemo treatment the day Charlie hit. It didn't get better after that, either. Bad year.

My husband's recovery has great great, but don't want another 2004. The local weathermen this a.m. said the storms are starting to roll off the African coast...

Well, Bruggirl is still here, just under another name, but I'm not tellin'. She hangs out sometimes at one of the renegade forums elsewhere, I think Garden Refuge. She's the one Retro got in a fight with. It ended up getting turned over to Spike, who still owned it at the time, and Bruggie got banned. When it was sold, and everyone was reinstated, she came back as Bruggirl, but the staff banned her again, so she's here as someone else, and has a different IP, so they don't know who she is.

Whatever happened to D.J. in Cape Coral? I think she was Lady10? And where are Bill and Carolyn? Bill used to have some great plant swaps. I know Charley tore his place up pretty badly.

I'm here! Thanks for remembering me! I do, too, get nostalgic for earlier years & folks on GW. I guess 5 years from now, Mikemo and the other newbies will remember the thrill of finding the "like minds" at GW who are generous and excited about gardening.

The Hurricane Tips thread is one of our classic bests - thanks for the link.

2003...Remember the thread about front yard art vs home owners associations that was a hoot? It was followed by the fashionable wear in our gardens thread.

I miss Ambersky from TampaArt's swap last year. Where's Amber?

I also have been a member for a long time and generally find the quality of the forums has went downhill over time . Was so excited when I first found GW as the list of forums was mind boggling. lol I'm particular interested in various types of plants as well as methods to grow them.
Some that have declined the most are "Tropical, Palms terrariums,aquariums,
I particularly enjoyed the posts from people in tropical countries where you got to see a glimpse of true tropical gardens. Venezuela, Malaysia ,Phillipines, Australia. And the growers of botanical garden rarities. They frequently sent pix of things I could only dream of seeing lol
I think most notable is the decline in the numbers of posts . many have declined to almost no posts I still have a post on the first page of the Botany forum that is several years old .
One fantastic post was from a man who was visiting Madagascar and he sent me pix of actual habitats!!! And he knew the dif betwen a Lace plant and an Aponogeton .lol
WOW where would you get that kind of help??

I agree we are missing alot of "old timers" who were always giving great advice or just fun to have around.

Gary, I agree most of the forums are not as busy as they used to be, including the florida forum.
I know I don't post as much as I used to. I tend to lurk.

I know Ambersky was having some health problems in the past, I hope she is ok. I hope she is oh. She is missed!
