What kind of digital camera to buy?

Never had a digital, would like to photograph my blooms close up, and landscapes when traveling, but also my cats indoors. Please give me some guidance. Don't want too cheap a bargain that will disappoint or be problematic, but don't want to spend "a lot" (not over $150?). Want dependable & simple. I assume all are lightweight or small.

Have no home computer nor do I want one. Would use the super one at work & its great color printer or drugstore printer.

Please, those of you with the gorgeously colored closeups of your blooms, please advise me! Thanks!

Go to eBay and bid up to your limit ($150) on those offerings with the most megapixels. Bid more if they offer additional lenses or memory sticks.
I take pretty good pictures with 2.1 mpixels. Jetstream takes fabulous photos with something like 8 mpixels.
Buy the best camera you can afford and you won't be disappointed, but you should be able to get a very good (used) camera for under $75.
If you want the best new camera, be prepared to spend $800-1200 on a Nikon D70.

Several Nikon Coolpix 4100 4.0 megapixel digital cameras on eBay going for $80-$150. This would be a great camera for the garden because it can handle closeups so well.

One of the best digital camera sites around is dpreview.com. You can spend forever reading their reviews and forums. The canons are indeed highly regarded, but there are also many nikon and sony fans as well. Personally I'm a canon guy, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that they're hands-down the best in all areas. There are digital cameras available in all price and quality ranges. It really depends on what you want to spend. I love the elphs like lowspark has, but you do pay extra for the small form factor. Canon has a range that's cheaper but larger, with similar quality in terms of lens and imaging. You should generally plan on buying a separate memory card as the ones that come with the camera are pretty lame. Figure on getting a 512MB or 1GB card. The higher the resolution of the camera the better, in general, however there are some technical issues as resolution gets above 5 megapixel. So a camera with 7 megapixel isn't necessarily always better than a 5 megapixel camera. I'd generally look for a camera with 5 megapixel or higher, and a 3x or better lens in the range of 35-135 or thereabouts. Image stabilization is very nice to have; canon has optical IS, which is generally considered better than electronic IS. Also important is speed in several areas. How long does the camera take to turn on? How quickly does it take the image once you push the shutter button? How quickly can you take multiple photos in sequence? How quickly does it focus? Those are things you can get a feel for by playing with the cameras in a local store. In general, you can't go wrong with canon, sony, or nikon.

When you remove a memory card from a camera and put it into a reader, be very careful not to perform any operation that 'writes back' to the card. For example, you may have opened an image into photoshop or MicroSoft's photo viewer and made some minor adjustments. When you went to delete the image, the software asks, "Do you want to save?" If you answer, "Yes", the image gets written back to the card and this may spoil its propertiary format. When this happens, the only solution is to re-format the card and loose all images on it. You may have to, with the card in the camera, delete all images before it will re-format. If the card is so messed up that the camera's software will not touch it, try this: Put the card in the external card reader and delete all images, then see if the camera will re-format the card. Make sure there are no files ledt on the card set to 'read only'. Scrapeing the gold plated contacts is not recommended for two reason: Typical gold plating for this kind of application is about 5 microms thick. Any thinner, and you would be able to see through the plating. Scratching it rubs through the plating and may carry embedded comtaminants to the contacts in the camera. The secomd problem is static discharge. Minute static charges impressed on the contacts can ruin the card. The best policy is do not touch the contacts. By the way, I also use an external card reader to extract images from the card. I copy the images to a hard drive or other storage device and for the lack of a better term, call these my master copies. I do all my editing on copies from the 'master file', keeping the master copy intact and never witting back to it. Thus, if my edit gets messed up, I merely get another copy and play with it. You may want to consider setting the master copy to 'read only'.

Cathy, I would like to offer one word of advice. You stated that you don't shoot landscapes and such, which is fine, but I would strongly advise you get a camera that will handle all of your immediate needs but still offer the versatility to branch out into other areas. Once you start shooting digital with reusable memory cards and rechargeable batteries you will instantly realize that you no longer have to concern yourself with the high cost of film and processing, and you will be free to shoot more. In fact, you might find that digital photography can quickly become addictive..LOL. Now in regard to the choice between Pentax and Nikon, for me it was a no brainer. I began shooting Pentax SLR film cameras in 1968 and over the years I have amassed a collection of 5 Pentax SLR film cameras, 41 Pentax lenses, and not to mention a bellows and a long list of other items. I can still use all of those lenses with my 3 Pentax digital bodies, allowing of course that when using the older lenses you are limited to the features that are built into the lens. By example, when using the old M42 screw mount lenses I must operate in full manual mode and manual focus lenses are still manual focus on the digital camera, but here again, Pentax developed the first auto focus camera and they made a full line of auto focus lenses for the auto focus film cameras that are fully compatible in auto focus mode on the digital body. With that in mind there are some super bargains on high quality used lenses that work fine on the Pentax digital bodies. The only caution is be very careful of third party aftermarket lenses that are made with the Pentax mount. There is something different about some of those mounts and there has been instances when one of those lenses is attached to a digital body it will not come off again. On the other hand, they also make an adapter that allows the use of the older Pentax M42 screw mount lenses on both Nikon & Canon digital bodies.

Jackie, I borrowed a digital camera from the high school where I work. I wanted to try it out before purchasing one. My husband and I loved it so much that he gave me one for Christmas. He bought a Sony that requires a floppy disc. I love the convenience of popping in a floppy and viewing the pictures right away. As far as the quality, if you use the finest quality setting on the camera, a really good printer and photo quality paper, you will be very happy. I started out printing on regular copy paper, just until I got the hang of cropping and printing. Now I use only HP photo paper. The difference is very dramatic. The ink soaks into the copy paper but sits on top of the photo paper making for deeper, richer colors. My camera has settings for black and white as well as antiqued pictures. I love it and wouldn't use any other kind of camera. My husband is an amatuer photographer and still uses his 35mm, but is really impressed with our digital.

Irma,

Since you do not have a home computer, you might want to look into a camera that prints directly to it's own little cradle / printer. Consumer Reports has an article this month on the best ones for various purposes. If you don't have access to Consumer Reports and want to see the article I could either fax or email it to you.

But generally, for your purpose, just wanting the best basic camera with printing option without a computer...I think the Kodak one was highly rated. I suggest going to Best Buy, they usually have the best prices and will price match legitimate ads, and you can easily exchange in case of defect.

I have a Kodak DX7440. 4MP Ilove it. I also have the printer dock. I don't think you really need the higher megapixels unless you are a pro. It's pretty neat to be able to print out your own good quality photos at the touch of a button. Circuit City is where I got it. It has a lot on it and I am still learning how to use it. Kodak has a good back up team.

Irma, what did you decide on? I still like the Nikons but have seen two recent reviews of Sonys that were very complimentary.

I put that purchase on the back burner, but am thinking about it again. Thanks for your helpful suggestions. Are there any more out there?

I have a 35mm Canon AE1 program that is 22 yrs. old and still takes a better picture than any digital I have seen. Granted I am drooling over the Canon digital that goes for $1,000, but since I don't have that to spend, I'm sticking with my old 35mm and using my camera phone for any pics I just want to send to friends. My neighbor has a cheap 35 mm that takes better pics than his new 4 mp digital. I've been a bit of a camera buff for yrs. and I don't think the digitals have the quality of the 35mm unless you go into the higher price range.

What does anyone else think?

I am madder than a wet settin' hen !I have been wanting to learn how to take pictures and post and send them! So..he goes out and buys a little digital..that only takes 8 pictures ?...fugifilm A345?....I need someone to show me how to take pictures and post and send them...AND go shopping to get a chippie thing that holds more than 8 pictures?.....before i hurt this...Man O mine ! Peggy
