I just got a new computer and printer. I got the HP Photosmart 1000 printer thinking that I would get a digital camera and print from the printer. I went to the camera store to find out a little about digital cameras. The man there told me that he didn't think I would be happy with one. That the pictures wouldn't be as good as my 35m camera. Do any of you have digital cameras and do you like them? What kind do you have? I want to use the photos in my scrapbooking and want to be happy with them. What do you think? Thanks, Jackie

I borrowed a digital camera from the high school where I work. I wanted to try it out before purchasing one. My husband and I loved it so much that he gave me one for Christmas. He bought a Sony that requires a floppy disc. I love the convenience of popping in a floppy and viewing the pictures right away. As far as the quality, if you use the finest quality setting on the camera, a really good printer and photo quality paper, you will be very happy. I started out printing on regular copy paper, just until I got the hang of cropping and printing. Now I use only HP photo paper. The difference is very dramatic. The ink soaks into the copy paper but sits on top of the photo paper making for deeper, richer colors. My camera has settings for black and white as well as antiqued pictures. I love it and wouldn't use any other kind of camera. My husband is an amatuer photographer and still uses his 35mm, but is really impressed with our digital.

Jackie, I have a Sony Mavica that uses a 3.5 floppy disc and I have been pleased with it. It has many capabilities as stated above. But, if you are doubtful, try to borrow one and see if you like it first. My DIL had one and I tried it before buying one. Good luck with your pictures and scrapbooking!

Hester, your butterfly bush is so pretty! Maybe someday I will find a spot for one. That white blooming plant is an alibertia. Mine is blooming now too and it is a great plant. You know I'm not fond of white, but when I saw it 2-3 years ago I had to have it, and it has not disappointed. Mine has only bloomed in the summer, but it is very eye-catching. Of course, I planted it it the very back of my property and I wish I hadn't. It's the color that made me do it. It does root at the nodes, but very slowly, so the expansion is quite pleasant and desired. I think I will have to find a better place for mine where I can see it more. Also, it is very cold-hardy and the foliage is disease-free and always looks nice. Great plant! I also love your bowtie and wish I had a spot for one, but no, notime soon. I know this is a long time coming. But I remembered this question when I ran across the following information recently. If you have XP Home, Go to your control panel, Double Click the Scanners and Cameras folder to open Connect your camera and turn it on then Right-click on the Camera Icon Left Click on Properties Left Click on the "Events" Tab in the Camera Pop-Up Window There you can either set a program such as "Microsoft Scanners and Camera Wizard" or put a check in "Prompt for which program to run". Which will open that options menu you speak of. There are two other choices there that are pretty well self explanatory. Make sure you click on "Apply" and "OK" If you Use Kodak Easy Share programs below is some other information about seeing your camera in My Computer. For a Windows XP operating system, it is not possible to see the camera as a drive letter when EasyShare software is installed. You can mount the camera as a drive using the Windows imaging acquisition (WIA) driver. To change from the Kodak driver to the WIA driver, do the following: Connect and turn on the camera. In the Transfer window, click Cancel. On the desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, and then select Properties. Select the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager. Click the + sign in front of Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then select the Kodak camera. Select the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver. Select Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next. Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install, and then click Next. Select Digital Still Camera, and then click Next. My quest was for a camera that could capture accurate colors of iris and roses. I saw my brother's pocket size Canon S230 (pocket size) was doing a better job on peach colored iris so I bought a Canon A95 (excel reviews, point and shoot but not pocket sized). I loved my old Olympus C3020 for reds and blues but figured it could die soon. Was I disappointed with my Canon! Did not do as good a job as my brother's on peach colors and not nearly as good as the Oly on reds, lavenders! The Oly did die after 7-8 years of service and the Canon croaked after only 3 years. I kicked myself for not spending more for a Panasonic (the many many iris pics taken with the DMC-FZ20 that I saw were consistently excellent). In desperation 2 years ago, before iris season, I bought a used $40 Sony W290. Quite good on all iris colors as Sony fans claimed, but there was a missing quality I can't define. Picked up a $100 used Canon G9 last year and I'm at last satisfied. Very good on iris and excellent on roses. So I've concluded that the model is quite as important as the maker. I like the Canon G series better than a friend's Canon EOS Rebel T2i DSLR --- tried it for a few weeks. Still itching to try a Panasonic. Good luck.

Just from my own real life experience as the mother two toddlers, I can tell you I own over $3000 worth of DSLR body and lenses. My best shots of my kids actually come from my Nikon Coolpix S8100 (under $200). I'll give you the lag time is more than my fancy DLSR. And yes, when I have time to pull the DLSR out I can get a much better photograph, but I can stick my Coolpix in any bag I am taking anywhere and it is always with me. So I get all the candids. My DLSR is bulky (and my kids come with enough baggage already. I love my DSLR, don't get me wrong, I have it for many other reasons, but if she is looking for great shots of her child, a fairly easy point and shoot is way more practical. Kalindi

We also have a Mavica, it takes great pictures! It was a little more costly than some others, but worth it. But, before you buy, check different stores. Ours was about a hundred dollars cheaper to buy in Tulsa, than it was to buy here in our town. Was worth the hour of driving time (actually 2, coming & going). Was going to Tulsa that day anyway. lol.

Digital is good, but do your research. Talk to people who've owned digital cameras. Go to consumer sites online. Some of the older and cheaper ones, the quality isn't as nice. Another idea is, if you live near a larger city, call the newspaper's photography department and schedule an interview with a photographer there. Many of the bigger dailies use digital cameras for their deadline work and can probably give you good insight.

I have an APS camera, and I love it. It's got a zoom, and you can change the frame from regular to a little bit bigger to panoramic. With APS (and probably 35 mm), some developers will put the photos onto photo CDs for you for a little extra.

If you do decide to buy a digital camera, however, it's a good idea to take both your regular camera and the digital to important events like a wedding.

We have one, and we just love it ! The pictures DO come out just as good as a 35 mm and if you dont like one.... you can just delete it ! Instead of having to pay extra for film developing that you arent happy with. Only down fall is... it takes alot of ink to print them out ! ;) Have fuN!

Check on CNETcentral & PC magazine sites for reviews & price compares on cameras. That's how I chose my Agfa 1280 Digital Camera. Then I bought it off Ebay for about $100 less than retail, plus it came with extra accessories. I was afraid it would be one of those things I never use, but we LOVE it, & use it all the time! You will also probably need rechargable nicad batteries & a battery charger, and xtra memory cards, unless you get one that takes floppies. Factor all this into total cost before making your decision.
The prices have really dropped this year on these cameras so it is a good time to try one out!

I did ALOT of research before I bought one (Kodak DC240)....here is what I suggest:

The higher the Megapixels, the better pics you will get.
The higher your Printer pixels are, your pics will print better.
Mine is 1000 x 1000 & I am not pleased with the printing quality of the pics. (you can see dots, especially in light colored photos)

Make sure you use brand name quality ink in your printer.
I have used the 'refill' kind & it makes the pics look so dull compared to the brand name ink.

My sister in law has the HP Printer & her photos are spectacular!
