Need help to boost growth of daylillies

I have two beds of daylillies. The yellow ones are doing extremely well. They have grown and spread almost to much but that's OK. My problem is the area where I have maroon ones planted. They are not growing well at all and have never bloomed. The 2 areas are within 10 feet of each other and both get about the same light and water. Both types were started from potted plants and have been in the ground 2-3 years. Any suggestions to "boost" the growth of the sparce plants?

You may need to divide them. Try amending the soil in the area where the maroon ones are. Add compost or other organic matter and fertilize.

They could be planted too deep. If too deep, you get foliage and no blooms.

Soil looks very good. Did you add the lime when you made it? The 5:1:1 mix isn't foolproof, but you pretty much have to work at over-watering; so just by employing your good sense, you should be able to flush the soil as often as you think your plant needs water. Immediately after repotting, you need tro give SOME consideration to where the fine feeder roots are in the pot. If there are lots of fine roots close to the bottom, water when your stick tells you it's time after pushing it deep in the pot. If most of the fine roots are near the TOP of the soil mass, you need to water often enough to keep the top moist, so those roots don't dry out. That's about it. Your plant will reestablish faster if you secure the plant to the pot, so the plant can't move relative to the pot if it gets jostled or is subject to a stiff breeze. Start fertilizing when you see evidence of new growth. If temps are above 55*, your plant wants to be outdoors, in shade, and out of the wind. You'll need to water more often than you're used to, and some growers think that's a problem. It just might be .......... from the grower's perspective - but not from the plant's perspective. To me it doesn't make sense to slight a soil because 'you have to water too often' when you're comparing it to a soil that's inherently limiting because you have to water too infrequently due to the fact it holds too much water. why would you expect much reaction by applying a time release fertilizer that probably is set to react over a 3 to 5 month period .. in less than a month .... see the logic failure there ... and adding anything else.. while the time release is still active.. is right up there with trying to kill it with too much love ... the ONLY thing that truly effect flower production is sunshine .. and as soon as it starts waning because of lack of such .. no amount of anything is going to change it ... but for trimming the other trees ... BTW.. how long has it been there.. and how much have the surrounding trees changed the amount of sun it gets???? was it ever any better ... or is this a recent transplant .... ken

From my actual experience .... Some cultivars are stronger and more aggressive when competing with this groundcover, and seem to cope quite well as far as their continued existence is considered. However, I have never seen a daylily cultivar develop many new fans and thrive. Other cultivars simply fade away and dissapear - die out - within a couple of seasons. My suggestion is to eliminate this aggressive groundcover anywhere nearby your daylilies. I have had success with localized control by pulling the vinca out - roots and all - and mulching about the daylily out to 15-18 or so inches. Keeping in mind, that the vinca WILL grow back from any existing vinca plants nearby. By it's nature, vinca migrates aggressively (usually) and wants to dominate any area in which it is growing. A great groundcover when and where it's wanted, BUT a nuisance pest anywhere else. It seems to nearly always 'get away' from it's original garden spot and will eventually run wild through woods, adjacent fields, etc.

I brought them upstairs for for heat and I needed more light so that is why I am using the floresents bulbs, last year I had them downstairs where it was cooler, had lots of growth but never any flowers, so I thought maybe they needed alittle boost with fertilizer and more light. I will back off on the fertilizer and see if they respond, but when would I start the fertilizing so I can get flowers, anyone?

Switch sides, If that doesn't work, pitch the maroon one and replace it with PARDON ME or CHARLIE PIERCE MEMORIAL.

To possibly clarify what xokientx is saying (if I may)... It may be the cultivar. Some take for ever to settle in and some may not do well in your growing zone, micro-climate, or what ever. If you "switch sides", and you still have the problem, you will have narrowed down the possible factors affecting the plants. The only thing with switching sides is you have the settling in period again. Brooke may be right with the too deep answer. Especially if you mulch alot.

Hey Ed,

Brief is good. I like brief. It's when people go on and on and on and on and on and on that is really frustrating. Have you ever talked to someone who just kept talking and never let you get a word in edgewise. I haven't experienced that very often. I don't know why. Maybe the people I talk to don't have much to say. I would like to hear other people talk because I like to learn new things. But it is the people that talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk and never say anything that can be frustrating. I hardly ever run into these people. Maybe it's because most people I talk to never seem to have much to say...............................................LOL

Perhaps your yellow one is one very vigorous cultivar, maybe even of those spreaders, like my friend has. She is constantly giving away pieces because it send out shoots everywhere. Do you know the cultivar names so you can check them?

I once received a nice big clump of Stella d'oro (famous for constant bloom) that didn't bloom in the 2-3 years I had it. It did produce lots of green leaves, and no, was not fertilized. Once divided and moved to an area with more sun it started blooming.
