I'm reviewing some recent purchases, and realize that there's some button turned on in my brain that won't shut off. Like a broken record. Recent purchases:

LOL! I do the same thing. I've been through an "eye phase" and a "purple phase" and a "spider phase" and a "ruffle phase" and a "dark phase"...and all of a sudden you realize you've bought 10 DL's that all look alike. Just spread them out all over the garden. It will even out eventually.

I guess the the thing I do for myself, after thinking long and hard and reading this thread, and not sure how to answer...is living my life on my own terms. I quit a corporate job after they gave me grief for caring for my terminally ill mother. After that I bought a Fetch! Pet Care franchise (not a commercial!) and use my time to care for animals. I don't make a fortune, but that's okay. I love my job....which I really don't even consider a 'job'. I enjoy buying books and reading, both novels and homesteading type books. I really enjoy starting my plants from seed for the garden, mostly heirloom tomatoes and peppers. Growing things is such a nice thing...it just makes me realize how great it is to watch things grow from seed and eat your results! Nothing better. Because I am self-employed I also enjoy spending time with my dad. I can go over to his place in the early afternoon and watch a movie or right now we are into the early season of season 4 of The Shield. I bought him the 7 series set for Christmas. I suppose I do those things for myself because after my mom passed away I realize time is precious and I only have so much time with him. When he is gone I can't do that and I want to make myself available as much as possible. So I guess the nice things I do for myself are living for me and my loved ones and spending time and enjoying our pursuits that bring happiness. Also, I enjoy travel magazines, car magazines and other 'fantasy' things that spark my imagination. I doubt I will ever live in Bora Bora or drive a Lamborghini, but is sure is fun to dream! Duane

I seldom get cold, I can sleep through the nightly train that runs through town at 2 am two blocks away and the light doesn't bother me either. I'm short, so the bed is always long enough, but my big travel issue is the bed. I swear that every time I book a motel they quickly arrange to send the same lousy hard bed. I doubt that I can pack a mattress, LOL. Of course, I still sleep on my old king sized waterbed, leftover from my "hippie" days. Elery says when I grow up, I'll get a big girl bed, LOL. I hope not. Clare, on another level, I wat taking some glass to recycle last week and there was a broken picture frame in the bag. Of course, the shard stuck through the bag and into the outside of my left knee. Not one bandaid or other thing in the Jeep except black electrical tape. So, I pulled both edges of the puncture together and taped it with black electrical tape and then drove to the Emergency Room. They know me on a first name basis, LOL, and now they'll talk about that black electrical tape forever. Two stitches later that electrical tape stayed on better than their surgical tape! Carol (dishesdone) tells me that's an "electrician's bandaid". Annie

Yes, of course. We have all made mistakes and regretted them, and spent some time beating ourselves up and feeling awful about it. Thank heavens most of our mistakes don't result in horrible consequences, and it doesn't sound like yours did. Golddust gave you good advice in that there are mourning periods for everything. The amount of time we mourn loss, or feel angry with ourselves is really determined by us. So figure what is a reasonable time, get into it and do a great job, and then knock it off and go on with life. Prolonged beating ourselves up generally results in our making more errors. If we're to do better in the future, we are helped by having confidence in ourselves. The pushy guy should be pretty easy to handle. Behavior that is reinforced tends to increase. When he is saying things you like and behaving as you want, hang on his every word as if he's the most fascinating person you ever met. Lean forward and look in his eyes when he's talking. Laugh at his jokes, smile a lot, wave off anyone who tries to interrupt him, do considerate things for him, offer him a homemade cookie, offer to get him a coffee when you get yours, etc. This is the most important part. Behavior that is neither rewarded nor punished tends to extinguish. When he is saying things or behaving in ways you don't like, pick lint off your clothes, yawn, sneeze, blow your nose, look at your watch, drop things and pick up things off the floor, polish your shoes, file your nails, stare out the window, daydream, pick at your cuticles, interrupt him mid-sentence to go to the can, remember suddenly that you have to talk to someone down the hall or upstairs, say you need to make a phone call and you'll get back with him -- in short, withdraw all your attention from him immeciately. If it's on the phone, say you have to hang up and you'll phone him back later. Boom, he loses your attention any time he's a butthead. Be subtle about this, not obvious. Vary how you do it. Don't confront him. Don't insist on anything. Don't "have a talk with him." Just be nice when he's nice and be "drifty" or disappear when he's not nice. If he points out you're not listening, say "Huh? Oh. Sorry. What were you saying?" Then as he launches into his garbage, you get drifty again. I promise you that if you do this consistently, it will just be a matter of days before you'll notice he's treating you better and better and acting like a jerk far less often, and eventually maybe never. Do the same thing with everyone you know. Works like a charm. My mom used to nag me on the phone all the time about just garbage. I mean, no I wasn't going to cut my hair because she said I should when I'm in my 50's, ok? So I started doing this to her. Mostly I'd say I had a pot boiling over, or an appointment I had to rush off to, or someone at the door and could I call her back? And boom, I was gone. When she was being nice I treated her like a goddess. Well ya know what? It took a few phone calls spread over a few weeks, but she stopped nagging me and we started having much more fun on the phone together. Forever. I've seen a lot of people improve a lot of relationships this way -- with their employers, their kids, their parents, spouses, exes, friends and relatives. Let me know how it works for you, please.

WOW thanks so much! I must say something you all may laugh at but here goes. I have not been feeling well (with a bad cough) this past Sunday my daughter found 5 black swallowtails in their first instar stage. At that time we still had 2 crysalis in the aquarium to be hatched or whatever you call it you can till I am a newbie. Having to have to clean out the aquarium after only 3 caterpillars I told her I wasn't bringing in any more cats. The next morning I looked at the fennel that the 5 cats were on and only saw 2 after feeling a little better and one of the butterflys flew away I decided to clean the aquarium and bring in the lonely 2. Now I am sorry I didn't save all 5 of them. I can't image bringing in hundreds. I can't believe my daughter saw the 5 little itty bitty swallowtails; it was such a pleasure. I don't think I will ever see those tiny eggs. I think you have to have xray vision to spot them! You people are amazing and it has been a great time watching the few that we have had this year. Your all great at what you do! Just a reminder ......keep up the great work .......but yes give yourself a break and don't feel bad at all! GREAT JOB!

Oh this forum is always good for a laugh.

I also find myself drawn to yellow with purple eyes. They really stand out don't they!!
Last year it was spiders that all looked alike.

I bought Orchid Corsage and Lilting Belle last year. The only difference I can see is that one is about 2 inches taller than the other. Go figure!

I love El Desperado. I've had this one for a few years and it's a great performer. Nothing wrong with falling in love with ANY kind of daylily! Dont break the bank.

I just got Desperado Love today from Goldcoast as an extra NA NA NA NA NA NA. I won and received Open My Eyes and Rock Solid, he sent great plants.
And YES I do get stuck in holding patterns, this year it has been pretty pinks with fancy edges, altho I did get lots of yellows, and EYES. I love oranges also. Well DANG I like lots of stuff.
Not EVEN gonna ask Wade what he is holding!!

bambi- I've been trying to FIND some nice purples! Really! Can't seem to find many that aren't 'lavender' that I like.
Going to search now to see if we had a 'purple' thread last season.

I have websters pink wonder, and skinwalker on my wishlist, but ill have to wait till next year, but by then Ill probably be wanting something different. I thought about getting pink super spider, but I read that the scapes were weak and needed to be staked up, so I decided against that one.

Ooh, I like 'Peppermint Wind.' VERY very nice.

I've found myself ordering is cycles/phases too. When I first "found" daylilies it was pale yellows/near whites I chose first (Frozen Jade, So Lovely, Ida Miles all at once), then a rash of true yellows and golds (Hyperion, Autumn Minaret, Golden Chimes, Mary Todd, Spellbinder) and peaches/oranges/warm blends (Zagora, Desert Princess, Cinnamon Pleasure, Big Show Off, Egyptian Spice, Bright Sunset, Banditman, Twiggy, Matt, and on and on). Last year and this year I've "discovered" pinks, purples, and dark reds (both crimson and scarlet tones) - I won't even start to list them now. I guess I've covered the daylily rainbow finally. I'm working on more whites, true dark reds and true pinks this year, many with etched eyes or blended colors. I suppose my next infatuation will be according to form or size. . . .

Actually, I did only buy the one. I had my eye on another seedling of his- another red- but it hasn't been 'cold tested' yet, and will be a little while before it's available. So yeah, it killed me to only buy ONE. Here's a pic of the seedling I was eye-balling (bet you never would have guessed the color- HA!)

NICE! Looks like it would put on quite a show, almost looks like it might be related to Pardon me.I went through a red phase last year. The red that I have that I like the best is Persian Ruby, It really stands out in the garden, and its so big!

The only holding pattern I see from mm is daylilies - all colors, all shapes, all daylily. And that's the truth - ooops sorry - but I'm sure some truths don't bother you or the rest of us.

You got that right, Brooke. I see a pretty face, and I want them all! Then I move out of that group into the next group, and get all THOSE!
It's a crazy, mixed up, shook up habit I have.
Ok, I won't make this into a catalog showroom anymore. I've beat this dead horse to oblivion, I think.

This year I'll get to start figuring out which ones should be moved next to others for best show...right now they are just plunked, and the look is haphazard at best.

Back over to the auction-house to see what I can procure today!!!

Geez, the daylilies that I ordered and planted this year are so varied that I don't think I could qualify for a holding pattern based on color or form. I did order paler daylies with eyes earlier in the year and then wanted purples, with eyes or not, afew orders later in the year but that just makes for more diversity in the daylily gardens.
