I'm not too sure that some of the species you mention would do well down here (for example the only specimen of cryptomeria japonica I've seen so far has been in zone 9: Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando). I'm guessing araucaria angustifolia would do well here (zone 10) since it is pretty similar to A. Bidwillii and I have two of these growing quite well in my back yard. Yes, Araucaria heterophylla is everywhere in Miami-Dade and they do grow very tall. They are also relatively wind resistant, most of these only losing occasional branches (I'm guessing these might cause some damage were they to land on one's roof during a hurricane) during storms. Of the many you mention on your list I'm most interested in cupressus kashmeriana and taiwania cryptomerioides. When I look up Montgomery Botanical Center I get the impression that it now is part of Fairchild Tropical Garden (I'm a member of the garden so next time I'm there, I'll ask). I have plenty of slash pine right across the road from me in the park so if I ever want to enjoy their look, I can do so pretty easily. Jerryattreezoo, I'll have to check out the species you mention; they sound very interesting. Do you know of any nursery in South Florida which would carry those species (afrocarpus gracilior, wollemia, bald cypress)? How did you get the sequoia sempervirens?

G'Day monkeytreeboy, I have over 200 seedlings of Araucaria araucana, so I think I might be in love with them too LOL G'Day Jaro Certainly those species depicted in the wild are present in the gardens as well as an exemplary selection of both Northern and Southern Hemisphere conifers, too many to list. There are numerous places to visit within easy access of Hobart (Tasmania's capital) and in particular Mt Field National Park which is only an hour from the city. Over 30% of Tasmania's flora is endemic and of the 11 conifers present here, 9 species are endemic. Unlike many European countries, the diversity in our flora increases with altitude. Yes: part of knowing what to do is knowing where to look, when you need to. Even a professor has a wall of books in his office. I've been criticized recently for quoting from books here. That I do that doesn't mean I've been looking everything I post up. There are multiple reasons for excerpting from outside sources, as part of a discussion. That's why there's an Optional Link URL box provided by the site. Another idea that has popped up more than once in discussions on this site is that if it's in a book it's invalid, the flip side implication being that if someone types it off here or better yet says it to your face it's automatically more valid. No, books are just another format for information. They can reproduce baloney or be worth their weight in gold. They do have the advantage of being edited (with varying degrees of success). The only "peer review" or "editing" that occurs here is follow-up posting.

I purchased it as P. Pungens 'baby blue' (you know the tags, "blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool"). It was only after a year or two that I noticed its branches were weeping. I think I planted it Nov 2014, but maybe Nov 2015. I do remember when purchasing it, it was different (I looked at every single one they had, probably over 200) but weeping never crossed my mind even though in thinking back I remember it looking about what it currently looks like. When I compared it to my 7 or so other P. Pungens 'baby blue', it was clearly different. I guess it would be considered a seedling with a mutation (or a mutated seedling?) ? The baby blue are grown from seed.
