Compare this "state champion" Picea asperata in Southeastern PA, zn 7/6 border:

with the noble habit of the tree in its native habitat, which is probably zn 8/9-ish or so:

Obviously the trees in the wild faced more competition for resources, yet are better looking. Explain.
